Question about system exchange on a 1640

I currently have a studio XPS 1640 and have been approved for a system exchange. My current laptop has:

T9600 (6M Cache, 2.80 GHz, 1066 MHz FSB)
ATI 4670 1gb
16" RGBLED 1080p
250gb 7200RPM Hard Drive
3gigs ram
Windows Vista Ultimate with free upgrade to windows 7 ultimate

My question is: Does Dell pull laptops from their outlet store to give to people as system exchange? Because I was going through the XPS 1640's they have and none of them have the 4670. They all have the 512mb 3670.

I was approved for a system exchange on the 1st and was erroneously assigned a laptop that had an inferior processor, screen, operating system and graphics card. I contacted Dell and they canceled that order and said it will take another 2-3 weeks.

 

you will probably get a 1645 or 1647 don't worry.

 

Whatever I get, I want something that doesn't throttle. Doesn't matter to me if it's a refurb or brand new. My current laptop throttles LIKE CRAZY when I play starcraft 2. Only way I can play is if i use a cooling pad and a giant fan on high lol

I just recently got a 1645 last week, and at least for me it does not throttle when playing games.

I just installed CODMW2 this weekend, and am able to play on highest settings (though with AA x4) @ 1600x900 and it does not throttle even after 2hrs of playing. I am using a cooling pad and external monitor, so my lid is closed which allows constant air flow. i would recommend an external monitor if it is feasible - in some cases I think having hte lid closed helps much more than using a cooling pad and/or desk fan.

 

An external monitor isn't possible for me at the moment. Have you tried playing at 1920 x 1080? I currently play SC2 on Medium at that resolution and it runs fine with the fan/cooling pad.

 

yes, i tried MW2 at 1920x1080, with the otherwise same settings (everything on high, except AA at 4x), and it did not throttle even after long periods of play.

but after the Favela mission, i decided to turn down the resolution to 1600x900 as there were moments with intense fire-fighting that seemed to "stutter" where i noticed my frame rates drop to say 20fps. decreasing the resolution completely rid me of that problem.

and if it makes any difference, i am using the 10.7 ATI drivers from Dell's own webpage

 

Well, just got my specs. I kinda got screwed with the RAM, but it's ok RAM isn't that expensive. Any way to tell if this is new or a refurb? I'm just glad i got Arctic white.

strange, they are giving you a 6-cell battery for a 1645 unit (the i7-720qm gives it away as the 1645).

i will be entirely honest and say that i think it's refurbished. i have not seen any XPS16s that come with a quad core processor and only 3GB of memory, as well as a 320GB hard disk.

 

I believe yours will be new.

 

They are usually generous when they send a refurbished system, but pretty stingy when they send you a new system(usually equal to your original).

 

Yeah I kinda figured. I noticed that I was getting a WLED instead of RGBLED and contacted them about it and they said they no longer make that screen. So then the awesome rep said, because of the inconvenience, I can bump your RAM up to 4gigs instead of three. I'm like that's fine. So the above laptop got canceled, and I got this new order

Seems like that rep was feeling generous and gave me 6 gigs!! It kinda sucks I wont have RGBLED anymore, but the 6 gigs will be nice.

 

Congrats! on your new PC I had the 1645 for a few days as a replacement and was impressed with its speed.
