As far as I can tell, the 1640, 1645 and 1647 are identical in size. Is this true?
Would a motherboard from a 1645 fit in a 1640? or vice versa?
-
They are the same dimensions, but if you change the motherboard, then you will have to change the CPU, etc.. (C2D-1640 --> i5/i7-1647/1647)
-
Thanks, I'm not changing any parts I was just curious. So basically:
1640 = Core 2 Duo
1645 = i7
1647 = i5
Am I right? the only major difference is the processor? -
yea. different mobo and cpu. same size.
-
does this mean we cant have an I7 on a XPS 1647 that came built with an I5 ?
-
Yes that is correct.
-
You can have an i7 620!
Quad core is overrated!
-
Except for the I7-620M, which is different from the other I7s; it's dual core. It does come in the 1647 and not in the 1645.
edit: Too late! kezuk12 beat me to it... -
no it isn't

You cannot put a 1645/47 motherboard into a 1640. There have been slight changes in the motherboards like where screws would go and the removal of the northbridge ( could be southbridge cannot remember ) that will not allow you to change it. 1645 > 1647 or vice versa will work fine tho
-
It's a bit of both. The memory controller that used to be in the northbridge is now integrated in the CPU, and there is no longer a FSB.
The new 'chipset' for the i series processors is like an old southbridge (mainly a USB and SATA controller) plus the pci-e controller which used to be a part of the northbridge. -
Ahh I see, thanks for the info. I was just curious about the differences.
-
The hardware near-identical, I bet that if you could get someone to mod the 1647 BIOS to recognize a quad-core, it would probably work just fine.
-
Spoken like someone who only has a dual-core, haha.
-
Haha and I'm very proud of my mighty i7 too
-
I am going to grab Kezik12's laptop once I figure out where in the world he lives. I am guessing the stated location of England UK is a lie so I am going to start in Fiji. Or maybe I should do this alphabetically and start in Afghanistan or something.
I'll be really angry however if he is using the anti-theft feature ...
I am a big fan of the i7-620M but its no longer a configurable option ... And Dell lured me in with a very cheap price to buy the quad core. -
720qm vs 620m, I'd hesitate too, but 740qm vs 620m? I'd choose the quad in a heartbeat. I wish the xps16 supported multi cpus like the alienware m17x.

Imo my config is the best. I would never take a dual core over it. Im contemplating whether or not an 840qm or an SSD is next in my upgrades list.
Question about the difference in dimensions between a 1640 vs 1645 vs 1647
