Hi,
I have a 1.5 ghz processor on my m1330 laptop. What might some benefits be if I upgrade this? I was thinking about upgrading to on thats 2.0ghz. Can I find a cheap upgrade on newegg because dell's upgrade parts are really expensive. thanks,
Nick

I'd probably opt for the T8100 on the low end for $204. The T8300 is $244.

Depends what you use your laptop for. Benefits: improves performance of cpu-intensive tasks (like video editing). As for cheap upgrade, you can find plenty of bargains on ebay.

Are the eBay chips a safe purchase? What's the risk of problems (bent pins, ESD damage, outright counterfeit)?
To the OP: two other benefits (based on replies when I asked a similar question): longer battery life and cooler operating temps. -

If you are upgrading, choose a penryn over a merom.. Preferably a T8xxx or T9xxx series chip. The T9300 is a very good choice, if you are willing to fork out that much, otherwise I'd recommend the T8300...

Some of the CPU's sold on ebay are ES chips (engineering sample). These are early revisions of the chip given to reviewers and testers for trials.Avoid buying an ES chip.

Thanks. I'm not seeing any T8x00 chips on eBay right now that are cheaper than NE, and many are actually more expensive...

I just upgraded from a T5450 1.66 GHz to a T8300 2.4 GHz and find that CPU intensive programs such as Photoshop and ConvertxtoDVD are much faster.
Mine was from e-bay and got it for the steal price of $177 USD + $20 shipping. -
If you post details on what you use your laptop for, then we can suggest a suitable processor upgrade.
Unless you do video editing or photoshop, do not upgrade your processor, there will be close to 0% difference for regular use like browsing, watching movies etc. -

i believe T8100 is an OEM-only processor.... so how does NE get it?

Can we use p9500 for M1330?
Idea is run cooler with 25W instead of 35W Penryn.
I know FSB is limited to 800MHz.

I would definitely want to know this as well. I currently run a T9300 in mine and would consider the P9XXX if I can get even more battery life, that is, if the upgrade does not cost too much.
-
Well if you guys upgrade...I'll take your old one ;-)

P9500 will NOT work on the M1330. I just tried. Won't even boot. Have T7500 2.2 and wanted some additional juice.
So don't waste you money. My P9500 is up for sale on SF Bay area Craigslist for anybody that can use it elsewhere. -

Which bios is it using? Although it probably wouldn't work with any bios, but i am curious....
-
A12 BIOS and no boot screen at all. On..Off... 1 second.

Guess it's one of those intel things... The refreshed processors, while using the same architecture, are never compatible with the older chipset... eg. the Merom T7200/7400, which aren't compatible with the M965 chipset, although they don't use the same socket as the merom refresh either....

Ok, today I dropped in a T9500 CPU. Bam. Super easy and fast. Booted right up. Auto installed a CPU driver. Rebooted. Good to go.
FWIW, from T7500 2.2 to T9500 2.6 Windows Experience Index went from:
5.1
4.8
4.1
4.7
5.3
to
5.5
5.1
4.1
4.7
5.3
Boot speed shorter by ~20% -
The thing I keep thinking about is the lower temps and longer runtime with an enhanced processor. I'm currently running a T5450, IIRC. Going to a T8x00 could be a big improvement. the T9x00 seems like uneconomical overkill for me, but that's just me.

i just happened to stumble in here from a google search for that exact upgrade!
*goes to have a look round* -
See this thread.

1.Remove bottom cover.
2. Remove Thermal Cooling Assembly.
3. Same process until you see three chips.
4. Turn screw 90-120degree to unlock CPU.
5. Remove the CPU.
6. Align new CPU and lock it.
7. Follow above procedure again to add Thermal Compound.
8. Reverse above.
You need Thermal Compound but very easy for most of the people. -
I was told in another thread that you only need thermal compound if you disassemble the gpu cooling assembly?
Is this the generic thermal compound that you can get at electronic supply stores? -

Got it, done. Thanks.
