I've been looking at these two items...

    ALL New! Intel OEM SLGEE T9900 35W 3.06GHz 6M L2 1066 - eBay (item 120546269190 end time Jul-19-10 01:29:02 PDT)
    Intel T9900 CPU

    And...

    Newegg.com - CORSAIR 8GB (2 x 4GB) 204-Pin DDR3 SO-DIMM DDR3 1066 (PC3 8500) Laptop Memory Model CM3X8GSDKIT1066 G
    Corsair 2 X 4GB RAM DDR3

    Relevant Specs: SXPS 1640, Intel P8700, 4 GB RAM DDR3 (2 X 2GB), Intel PM45 Chipset

Is it safe to install a CPU that is OEM or would I be better off getting one off a site like New Egg? Also, does anyone know how many memory channels the PM45 has? Do I need 4 X 2GB or 2 X 4GB for 8 GB RAM?

I am not sure about switching CPUs, however it could be a bit risky and it will likely void your warranty if it is still active. As well if the T9900 wasn't an option on the Studio XPS 16 you might have a problem cooling it.

However in my experience, notebooks only have 2 DIMM slots so you are going to be best off buying 2 x 4GB.

According to wiki: PM45 chipset does support DDR3 1066MHz, however don't hold me to that.

Yeah, the T9900 was an option for SXPS 1640s. And the PM45 supports the DDR3 RAM 'cause that's what I have in my motherboard.

The T9900 will fit without an issue. I plan on doing the upgrade myself eventually. The laptop has 2 DIMM slots so you will need 2-4GB sticks. It can handle DDR3 1066MHz without an issue as well. Hope it all goes well.

Upgrading a CPU is almost always a bad investment, especially considering that you're going from a high-end one to the best in the series, which is always marked-up beyond belief.

I highly doubt that the CPU is the bottleneck in your system. Spend the money on an SSD like the Intel M-series. Much more drastic difference.

As stated above CPU upgrades are rarely worth it. Similarly, unless you have a specific need, memory upgrades will yield little to no performance benefit since both rarely are maximally used.

I also agree to lithus, upgrading to SSD system seems a better option at this time.

according to intel's site, this chipset support DDR3 at max 1066mhz, so even if you have 1333mhz(like mine) it will be operating in 1066mhz speed. 2 pieces of 4gb is your only option, coz this laptop only have 2 ram slot.

I would like to know, why 8gb? is 4gb ram not enough for your current needs?

T9900 will work with the SXPS 1640. In UK, it used to be sold with that option. It has the same TDP (35 W) as the other T-series, such as T9800 and T9600, just higher clock speeds.

2 RAM bays. So for 8 GB, you need 2 4 GB sticks. 1066 would be the right speed.

Totally unrelated note, but if you're looking for a speed increase, get an SSD first. Much more worth it.

I game a lot, so the extra memory is always a plus. As nice as an SSD is, I'd need a rather large one, I have several games installed and I need all the space I can get.

Probably just a bit of difference? Open Task Manager and run your games and stuff and see how much RAM you are using constantly. If there's at least 20% free I'd forget the upgrade.
Well then none of your posed upgrades will make THAT much of a difference. 8 GB RAM will be good if you're running 4 virtual machines at once and T9900 would be good if you're running Photoshop and Illustrator constantly or something.
