    Depends if they use 2x2 or 1x4. If they use 1x4 then it *should* work but nothing's garuanteed because of the mixed brands.

    DDR RAM usually comes in pairs, so the 4GB your laptop comes with will really be 2x 2GB chips, and that kit you linked to is 2x 4GB chips. As long as the XPS17 has 4x RAM slots, then yes, you can run all 12GB. However, if it only has 2x RAM slots, then the max you can have is 8GB.

    Yes, I am pretty sure the NON 3D comes with just 2 slots (think I've read that here) so the best would be to save the $120 - $50 (for the 8GB package) = $70 savings, toss the 4 GB installed (not likely anyone would want to buy it)...or use on the girlfriends 2GB system.

    That's if I want to go thru the hassle of opening and intalling the RAM - destroyed the speakers somehow when I tried opening my current Inspiron 8200 years ago...
