Does swapping the HD and/or RAM void the warranty? I'm specifically talking about the XPS M1530, but I'd assume that this would apply to any warranty.

They won't cover that part if something happens. Keep the old one to put back in when you have to send it back / get work done on it.

The only reason I could see that it might void your warranty is if it could be shown that you caused damage to the notebook yourself while undertaking the upgrades. RAM and HD swaps are more or less idiot-proof procedures, but if you did happen to have trouble afterwards I'd not mention to Dell that you swapped them out. You don't want them trying to claim that 3rd-party RAM is what fried the motherboard so they're not covering it.
As mattocs suggested, keep the old components so you can put them back if you ever require warranty service. -
I fried a Dell mobo one time by not putting in the RAM all the way. They replaced it. They didn't ask if I did anything...just wanted the color of the lights on the back of the case.
