Hey guys, I'm looking to upgrade the RAM in my XPS 1645 when it arrives (or some time after that). And I was wondering what type of RAM we need? I know its DDR3 1333Mhz but I'd like to know whether to go for Class 5 (or 6 or 4? can't quite remember). And buffered or unbuffered? And whether it needs EEC or not. I remember researching this a few years ago but have forgotten by now.

Also does somebody know what brand (and type) sticks are in the 1645 standard?

    I'm looking for 2x 4GB sticks.

Unless you overclocked then there's no point in getting 1333Mhz, the standard RAM is 1067Mhz

1645 ships with i7s and I believe its FSB is clocked on 1333mhz. 4gb 1333mhz dimm modules are very expensive :S, they are like 400$ each. Don't know about EEC, class or buffer though, it might even get more expensive lol :S

What programs are you using? Any DDR3 SO-DIMM will work, performance won't be any different with DDR3-1067 or DDR3-1333, or with CAS latency 5, 6 or 7. I don't think any DDR3 SO-DIMMs are buffered (registered) or come with ECC, either way, they aren't needed except in a server setting. If you have a sXPS 1645, then use CPU-Z to check the memory brand, but again that doesn't make much difference since memory comes from only a few sources (Samsung, Hynix, Micron, etc.)

i7s don't use FSB but DMI and as above, performance isn't affected by using different speed grades for memory.

    4GB DDR3 SODIMMS 1333MHz modules are going for $300 each ... so $600 for two ... lots of money ... :(

Standard is 1333Mhz for the 1645, and according to CPU-Z it is actually running at it's rated 1333Mhz :D
