Are the RGBLED screen replacements refurb or new units? On the phone they said they would send me a new display, but I thought they quit manufacturing these screens. I am hoping it is not a refurb unit, but I am doubtful it would be new considering they are not available on new computers.

I doubt its new. Ive had 3 replaced due to crazy dust or blemishes behind the glass/plastic and the screen. All the ones i got were all slightly used looking to me, lol. Dell just offered to upgrade me due to issues, and i get a sick processor upgrade and video card, but at the expense it would be the non RGB screen, so im not sure.

is the crazy dust problem only an RGB thing? I used to have the SXPS13, and dust wasn't an issue at all.

Depends on where you are in the world.
If you're in the US where they've stopped using them you'll be getting a refurbished one, but if you're in the UK then I'd expect that you'd get a brand new one, as we still have them available here.

Dude i dont know, but i can tell you it totally exists! I have spent extensive time looking into it as have experienced it first hand on multiple screens. On my 3rd one, i actually put a thin line of tape to seal off the tiny gap between the glass and the lid to seal it off. Thats when i found that it is NOT dust.

Im not an expert, but i swear it seems like somehow the glass has pressed against the screen in places and almost "smudged" the two. Because when you look at an angle, you can see the "dust" on BOTH the glass, and as a blemish on the lcd/screen part. Its crazy.

But i just wondering if the non RGB is still a good display? I love my RGB but it does almost have a too saturated look. Almost like an lcd v.s. plasma where the lcd has "unnatural" color.

Well they are coming to replace it because my current screen has one dead pixel on it but if it is a beat up refurbished display I will just tell them I would rather keep mine.

Also I live in the US so they don't offer the screen new anymore.

d00d btw, you're really lucky to have a new system built after all those issues. I'm on my 3rd screen WLED replacement. I heard that they usually system exchange with refurbished laptops if they do system exchanges...so your situation may be unusual and rare?

but I've had the WLED screen always, and it really ain't bad. I really enjoy the whites and the vibrancy/brightness. Of course, I can't speak for the RGB screen as I've not inspected one...but the WLED is certainly a step up from the regular LCDs in the past.

Update: tech came today and replaced my screen. I looked at the box and it did not say it was a refurb and sure enough when I open it and take off all the plastic it was a brand new RGBLED screen.

How did you manage to get an RGBLED screen replacement?! I called for service last week and was told by a CS supervisor that RGBLED was no longer possible under any circumstances. My XPS16 has enough problems that they will be replacing it outright, but apparently without an RGBLED screen...so if you managed to get one, please tell me how!

Also, I asked for an upgrade from an i7-720/Radeon4670 to an i7-820/R-5730. I got the CPU upgrade, but he also claimed that they would no longer build ANY machines with an i7+5730 combo, "due to excessive power draw." Well, this seems like a crock to me since the 5730 has a lower TDP, but what do I know? Even though the i7/5730 is the only i7 configuration available, he claims that all these machines will be tagged with a hold and will not be built...(?)

Bottom line is: if my replacement machine will be missing the RGBLED screen (which was an extra $200 option at purchase) then what should I request as a replacement? The screen is absolutely the ONLY reason I bought the Dell...otherwise I would have gotten an HP (I like HP's, I already have 6).

Finally, I'm also very concerned that the replacement machine will be a refurb instead of a new build...is there any way to verify? Again, I don't believe the CS agent when he says the replacement will be "a new build, but they have to open it for testing so it will be labelled refurbished." (WHAT?)

Well I didn't get a replacement computer yet, so when I was on the phone and told them that the screen was bad they said they would send me a new one. I asked if it was going to be the RGBLED screen and they said that it had to be because it is what the computer came with and other screens are incompatible (I knew this was BS).

When I get a new computer since my throttling issue persists I am going to just swap the brand new RGBLED screen I just got onto the new laptop. If you have your old one with the RGBLED screen I suggest doing the same.

Concerning the Refurb computer, I was told something similar by a tech on the phone today, but I don't believe it. If it says refurbished I think it has probably been used, returned, and fixed.
