Because they have yet to run out of stock in your region. Once their gone, they are gone for good.

yesterday after months of negotiations dell replaced the studio 1557 with XSP 1645 but instead the RGBLED they send me the WLED 1366*768 resolution screen.
    the 1557 was full HD.
    what should i do?
is the difference between the to screens big?

Why should they give you the RGB? They might be able to give you the fhd wled, but you're getting a 1645 which is an upgrade from the 1557 already.

Not to be offensive but your being Naive. Everything is compatible. There are atleast 20 members on this forum who have the 1645 + RGBled. Also they sell the RGB in the UK. They are making you jump through hoops and you are falling for it. Call them and demand to know the status

I know. But did they get switched from 1640 to 1645? Dell says it cant be done because the internal components are different. Thats why they had to order a fresh one to fit 1645. And since they dont have RGBLED's anymore they cant estimate the date. Why? because RGBLED isnt part of the model for 1645 at least for Canada. I'll give it another call to see if they know the status. Oh and should I send my 1640? Or convince the support guy to keep it until I get RGBLED replaced?

    Many thanks!

well the parts are indeed compatible. The whole top of the computer is the same across 1640 > 1645 > 1647 the reps you are talking to know nothing. I called told them i was not happy as i payed for a 16 inch laptop not a 16 with a 15.6 inch screen and no questions asked i had a RGB installed onto my 1645 the next day. Nothing has changed from the 1640 > 1645 > 1647 except the motherboard. They are straight out lying to you. I am in Canada to so it is possible

I talked to like 7 different reps and they all said the parts are not compatible. I even spoke to a manager and he also said the samething. Im gonna call again to see status of new RGBLED and check once more if 1640 and 1645 are compatible. Can I use you as a reference? That there is a proof that 1640 and 1645 are compatible.

If you have WLED then if you look at the screen there are two black bars each sides about 0.5mm sticking out. Easy way to see is measure it from the aluminum part of the monitor. If there isnt then its RGBLED

If they're really giving you a screen with 1366x768 resolution, that's pretty bad. I didn't even know they had options other than 1920x1080 or 1600x900 for the SXPS 16. I don't know what resolution your 1555 screen was, but I'd sure fight if they were trying to lower it. As far as RGBLED vs. WLED (both 1920x1080 / FHD) there are lots of people happy with the WLED although the RGBLED is better. I'd say that's up to you. If they put RGBLED in writing, maybe you have some grounds for arguing. But if not, the WLED is probably as good or better than what was in your 1555.

my replaced dell was the 1557 ful hd 1920*1080.
is it possible to change only the screen and not again the whole XPS.
by the way,i received the XPS with win 7 home premium, instead the professional, again has promised because the replaced 1557 had the win 7 professional.
    is that important?

I got a good news. I just called Dell and the rep said that the technician should get the new RGBLED screen on Tuesday (because of long weekend). Then the technician himself will give me a call and schedule the on-site replacement date. Should the things dont go smoothly, a Dell rep is gonna call Tuesday saying that there might have been a slight delay and give me an update on when the screen will arrive. So if the technician calls, then its good, if Dell rep calls, not good.

    1) IF your original order included win7 pro, then yes. Otherwise, no.

    2) The RGB is/was $350 option, IIRC. The best you can get is the 15.6'' FHD WLED which is same as your current.

the xsp 16 inch wled is already with me from last Thursday.the problem was when i received it from dell i didn't check all the specifications, assuming that i will get what was decided with dell representative in may,yes it took more than 3 months.now i realized that it was i big mistake, but after months of frustration with the 1557 and then the long negotiations with dell probably i was to eager to take the xps.
so what is the difference between win7 home premium to win7 professional.

The wled is available in 3 following variation: 1080p. 900p, and the one you currently have. The RGB is a premium option and you certainly are not entitled to one. Trust me, you aren't the only one fighting with Dell in this forum. Sounds like you're simply in for gold digging for a better system.

The difference between the two windows s that the pro version is able to run xp vm(if you need to run softwares that aren't compatible with win 7). It also eats up more resources.

No both RGBLED and WLED have 1920x1080 resolution. Turn your laptop on. Then if you see there is a space between each side of the screen, which is about 0.5mm, then it is WLED. If the screen sides are closed up till the monitor screws, then its RGBLED. Kinda hard to explain in words but I think there are pictures if you google

The best and easiest way to figure out is to run a prog. that can identify your screen such as hwinfo32/pcwiz/everest and so on...

the rgb option was dell's proposal, not mine. i only wanted a replacement for the 1557 fhd.and i have a written prove with dell's proposal.
surely they gave the worse option.

If it was indeed proposed by Dell, then request them to send a tech to replace your current screen with the RGB or FHD WLED.

I know from reading comments here that the RGBLED went right to each edge (right against the screws in the bottom right and left corners) but does the "Edge-to-Edge FHD Widescreen 15.6 inch WLED LCD (1920x1080)" do the same thing?

No, there is a gap (a lot larger than .5mm). It is only the plastic sheet that covers the screen that actually goes "edge-to-edge". Apparently enough people thought this was an important enough feature that Dell sees fit to advertise it; I think it's a lame "feature" that would only have the slightest use on a touchscreen system, which is not an available configuration.

So, at the end of the day, for those who haven't bought yet (and have the option because they live in the UK :D), is it worth getting the RGBLED?

Considering the warranty issues should stocks of the panel run dry.

Or are Dell likely to source more, or are wide gamut displays on laptops drying up and unlikely to re-appear?

If battery life isn't a concern of yours, and you don't do heavy gaming then the RGBLED will be great for you!
If you have the money then you should consider yourself lucky that you're one of the few who have the option to buy it!

I have one and although it took some getting used to, everybody that has seen it has been amazed, me included!

The RGBLED has a higher power consumption than the WLED, hence why throttling was a bigger concern for those with RGBLED + 4670 users.

    Although I don't get any throtttling issues with RGBLED + 4670 + i7 620 with the 130W adapter.

RGBLED takes about an extra hour off battery life though! Something to consider.

I haven't used the RGBLED yet, but I can tell you that the WLED monitors are quite good for laptop displays. I've measured over 550:1 contrast ratio, and fairly high color gamut (though not as high as the RGBLED). The RGBLED is a great display from what I've heard from others, but considering how good the WLED is (for a laptop display), I don't know if it's worth the extra cash.

It seems unlikely that Dell will bring back the RGBLED for the 164*. From what I understand, they stopped making them a year ago, and are just selling them until stock is depleted. Considering how well they were loved, I'd like to think that Dell and Samsung will work out the issues and come out with a new one, but it probably won't be until the XPS16's successor.

of course dell is denying any previous agreement, their response is:stay with the current XPS 1645 wled (1377*680);replace it with a new 1557 (they think that i am stupid),or replace it with a 1558,(don't know the configuration).
i am still demanding the rgbled screen, but may be the FHD wled is better?
not for the quality, but because the throttling problems.

    There was with RGBLED + i7 quad core + 4670 + 90W adapter.

    I don't throttle with RGBLED + i7 620 + 4670 + 130W adapter.
WLED will be better for battery life! MUCH better!

The RGBLED from Samsung does need a a proper calibration though. Also play around with he saturation/hue to get it perfected and then its a beautiful laptop screen.

Hey Man, LONG story short, i had a VERY similar situation. Im going to post somthing that i wrote in another thread as i had BOTH the RGB and the WLED screens at the same time and had extensive time to compare both. So its a long post, but worth reading if you want someone who has seen BOTH. that said... I actually replaced the WLED on my "new/replacement" with my "old" RGB and did it myself. I have a link that will literally walk you right through it, and i have had NO issues at all after swaping them out, but have heard that the RGB screen MAY contribute to throtteling? Anyway here is that post with comparisons on both screens.

Hey Seeker, thanks for this thread and all the help! I am going to try that .icc profile later tonight and see how it looks. I actually have a little bit of different issue that somewhat relates to this so ill lay it on you. I have/had a sxps with the RGB screen, and after having some issues with the infamous dust getting behind the screen, Dell finally said they would replace my whole system! I didn't even ask for it, but they threw it out there so. Basically I got my new system and it has a WAY better processor, video card, battery and blue tooth. However.. it did not come with the RGB screen. So... I have both systems right now, and have done some pretty hard core testing on both. Im trying to decide if I should just keep the "new" screen which is a LGD0215, or have them swap the RGB from my "old" system. The more I look and tinker with the settings the more undecided I become.

Here are a few of my observations from both. Keep in mind I did not use any calibration equipment, just extensive tweaking in the ATI CC settings, and individually playing with the RGB channels (not JUST the "all channels" setting).

RGB: no matter what I do, the colors are SUPER saturated. Especially the reds. The colors absolutely POP and have high contrast, but almost looks to vivid and "fake". Don't get me wrong it looks good, but now looking at the non rgb, this screen looks almost to saturated. On the plus side is SUPER bright, and the whites seem much whiter on this monitor. Also.. Probably because of the increased color gamut, there is (to my eyes) noticeably less banding, which is a big plus to me and seems to make most pictures somewhat smoother. I almost thought maybe this monitor somehow has more pixels, which I suppose being a full 16" as opposed to 15.4" it does .

WLED: No doubt about it, this screen has significantly blacker blacks. The whites are not as white as the RGB but the black level is for sure more black. The screen is WAY less saturated. In all honesty it is probably more "true" color, but after looking at the RGB, it looks flat or very muted. I try to combat this by pumping up the contrast and lowering the gamma. But then I have no dark/mid grays as the gamma is to low. So its a battle of really unsaturated colors, or really no gamma and discernable darker/mid grey tones.
There is also no light leakage around the edge of the screen as the RGB has.
It is a slightly smaller screen and the extra bevel/border is a little annoying but not a deal breaker I guess.

SO.... the more I look at the 2 screen, the more undecided I become. Its driving me freaking MAD! It almost reminds me of the Plasma vs. LCD debate. I know the new one is not plasma obviously, but its basically like the non rgb screen has way blacker blacks, but its not as vivid or saturated. One second Im convinced I want to swap it with the RGB, and then next Im thinking the new one is as good or better.

With that all said, I was wanting to ask you a few questions. So... with your .icc profile, that is something totally different/separate than going into the ATI Catalyst and tweaking the settings there? I have gone into the control panel/Appearance/Calibrate Color. That gets me pretty much nowhere, so is that where you are creating or calibrating your color? Or do you use a 3rd party program to do it? The ONLY 2 things keeping me from just keeping this "new" screen, is that I would like just a LITTLE more saturation/pop, and also I think because of the blacker blacks, it doesn't seem as bright or like Im losing some color info in the darker grays. Basically the Dark grays are pretty much black, but when I up the gamma, then I get even more washed out color. Going to try your profile, and see where that gets me, but also when I do YOUR profile, at that point, if I tried to tweak it a little Im assuming I cant do that through the ATI cc center. Am I correct? Anyway... anyone that made it to the end of this post, congrats, I just ate up about 20 min of your life span!

UPDATE: I swaped the RGB myself, and after calibrating the RGB screen, i can say that i am VERY happy with my decison..... 2 cents.

Thanks but looks like you only read first page of the thread. The things happened so far is that after many phone calls, Dell has finally agreed to get a new RGBLED that fits 1645. They were supposed to call me today if the technician has received the screen or not, they were supposed to give me a call regardless. But they didnt give me a call so I called and tmrw a rep or a manger will call me. I'll see if they actually call me, but my patience is getting thinner.

for two days dell are ignoring my mails,as usual when they don't have an answer they ignore you,i am having this for 9 months.
after reading this thread and many others at this site and others my conclusion is that dell is a terrible laptop company.
i have at home 3 hp laptops they have their problems, still away better than my 3 dell's.
before buying dell i didn't know what is a BIOS update,i never formated a PC or installed windows.
    i am tired,after 9 months of hundreds of emails,telephones....
    DELL......NEVER AGAIN.

With Dell Canada you have to be a D i c k. I hate to say it but its true. There Techs are clueless and always insist on there way. You have to be firm and aggressive.

Grats. Good to see Dell coming through! I wonder how many more RGBLED displays they have reserved.

Yep, you're correct. You HAVE TO insist in your way. That's the only way you will get a satisfied result. I'm not an aggressive or an angry guy, but I had to be one. Brendanmurphy, cant thank you enough to push me through. Because of you I got everything that I wanted. Thank you.
