Today I checked on the dells website if there are any discounts or etc on the xps studio 16 since I am looking for a laptop for college majoring in Computer Science. I noticed that the "drought" of the rgbled option happened again....how long do these usually last? And by how much do they delay the shipment? Is it possible to call dell and buy it through the phone?
And can someone talk me out of buying a $2200 apple macbook pro...
Thanks

thats easy...
first off your going into CS.... what the hell would you do with a mac? stare at itunes?
The industry is windows based and you would do a lot more with that...
Macs are overpriced... and you cant really upgrade them
yeah yeah... you can put windows on a mac... but its not the same -
how about the rgbled screen shortage, how long will that last, oo and any news on a new xps 16 upgrades or etc?
-
Macs are generally for designing and such "artsy" people. That's who they market to and that's who buys them. There is absolutely no way I would recommend a Mac to a computer science major. Like ramatar said, putting Windows on a Mac is not the same and you definitely need Windows.
-
yes- seems to gone again.. interesting... I hope this does not effect my order- placed 4/8 with RGB
-
To answer your other question, you can try calling, no guarantees but someone might be able to put you on the "wait list" to be the first in line when they come back (unless they're never coming back)
-
do you guys remember how long the drought lasted last time it happened? i need the rgbled because I do a lot of photoshop on the side
-
The people who keep saying "it's not the same" when putting windows on a lac are correct... If by "not the same" meaning you have an apple logo on your computer
.
Running windows 7 in bootcamp is just like dual booting two operating systems on a pc. It has full access to the hardware and there are no limitations. -
The shortages that keep occurring on the sxps are happening industry wide. I ordered an sxps for a relative and at the time there was no shortage. However with my alienware there was a shortage and it took about a week until it was available again. The RGB screens are in really high demand right now. If I were you I would wait it out. The RGB screens truly look amazing...
-
well i am set on the xps, because it it a powerhouse of a computer, now the wait for the rgbled begins
-
It's however available via EPP. So if you know anyone in college they can order for you and get what you want. -
RGB LED LCD is one of the main reasons I went with the XPS16.
-
Looks like you can order with i5 on the buisness side - and not calling it premium anymore
Edge-to-Edge FullHD Widescreen 16.0 inch RGBLED LCD (1920x1080) W/2.0 MP [add $250.00] -
the i7 720 config can be ordered with it here in Canuck land....back a few weeks ago you could ony go with the 620 and under ...
-
I checked again on the buisness side- if you choose a lid color other then black no RGB option- Just plain black gets it strange. mine was shipped today with RGB in Red... Sucks that the weekend is here - means monday or tuesday -poor me...LOL

And Windows tends to run faster on Apple hardware than PCs, according to benchmarks.
OP: I personally think you should get the Macbook Pro, if you have the money. Reasons:
1. Good hardware
2. Hardware + software integration = great
3. OS is quite user-friendly
4. You can put Windows on it
5. You won't be sending this thing back nearly as much as you would with Dell
6. Multi-touch trackpad can do loads more than Dell's, and it is more responsive
7. Macbook screen is incredibly vibrant. I don't know how it compares to the RGB screen, though.
8. Unibody case. Yes, it does make a difference when tiny little pieces aren't breaking off.
Cons:
1. Expensive for the hardware performance you buy
2. F*** the Apple Store. If you cannot diagnose your own problems, they'll do it for you. And they suck at it.
I've had so many damn issues with Dell laptops that they have literally driven me to getting a Macbook as my next computer. Dell cannot make good notebook hardware for squat. Just look at all of the replacement/warranty posts..I even had to get my original XPS M1530 replaced because of numerous, numerous motherboard problems.
But I am impressed with the Studio XPS 16 - it is a real improvement to the old XPS laptops. Still, it has some pretty annoying problems with it. -
@the OP:
I find the Dell site is 'kinda funny'... I've been mulling over getting the XPS16 among other machines, and have been visiting their pages often, checking for spur of the moment 'sales'; or better deals during their 'signature events'. Anyway...
I found the RGB LED option wasn't available with the cheapest base XPS 16. If I selected 'configure' on any of the others base configs, it was there.
Additionally, there were a few days there that if I didn't keep only the plain black glossy exterior selected, the RGB LED option would go away [!] Meaning, if I selected the red exterior with leather, no RGB LED when I went back to the display option page; de-select any upgraded exterior, and the RGB LED option would be back. But then, just the other day, I found I was able to select both the red+leather exterior + RGB LED.
....go figure. -
That's 0 for 4. Good post, dude! -
RGB LED Drought? I just had one warranty replaced on Friday.
-
-
Both American and Canadian sites RGB LED GONE !!
The only reason I got this because of the screen
-
Dunno why you say that. I'm looking at it right now. Actually, I do know why you say that; I mentioned it a few days back. If you start w/the cheapest XPS 16 config it's not avail; & sometimes, if you upgrade the case, it disappears. Otherwise, it's there.

RGBled option gone again?
