I've been noticing more and more that web browsers in general are such memory hogs. It's not uncommon to see 500MB - 750MB being used by one of my browsers and it doesn't matter if I use Chrome, Edge, Firefox etc. they are all the same. Add in a few always running apps like MS Outlook, Dropbox, One Drive etc and all of a sudden a good amount of ram is being used.

What's strange is that I find my system becomes extremely sluggish the moment 40-50% of my RAM is being used. I have 16GB now.

Is it worth upgrading to 32GB? It's an easy enough upgrade and I'm considering it but thought I'd ask here on the forum. Also, what about changing the Wifi card to the Intel 8260? I see more and more people doing this. I'm currently using the XPS 15 9550 laptop.

    Any feedback would be appreciated.

    Thanks

No 32gb will not help you. Your usage is just typical desktop application usage... Even if you open tons of browser tabs at once. You aren't anywhere close to hitting 16gb of usage, so an upgrade to 32gb won't help.

The typical person that needs 32gb are usually people that run memory hog applications like photo editing of RAW photos, running large databases, or running lots of virtual machines.

Strange because although the laptop isn't using the full RAM available, I find once it crosses over a certain threshold e.g 40-50%, the system slows down considerably, especially if I have a few large PDF files open etc.

I have some huge CPU-RAM intensive programs. With 8GB of RAM, I saw RAM use creep up to 90%+. Installing 32GB allowed them to use the full ~14GB they need; the programs perform much better.

If your RAM usage is never near 90% I don't think additional RAM would help.

This is a tough time to be buying RAM. 32GB was $120 in the autumn and now about double that!!! Amazon had HYPERX IMPACT 2400 32GB for $149 a few days ago. Search to see if that deal is still available.

What's driving ram prices higher these days? I don't follow it too closely, we expecting a moderation in prices? I'm in Canada, best deal I could find on HyperX Impact 2400 32GB was $269.00 CDN which is like $206 USD. Just not sure if I should do it or not.

interseting... i have the 9350 so i cant upgrade my RAM but I have 8GB and I tend to hit 80% max usage so far, lol. If I could upgrade, I would, just to give me that much more freedom. But I would say its not so urgent for you, so you can afford to wait a bit till the RAM prices drop again.

    Worth every bit,

No intentions of upgrading my laptop anytime soon
