I'm eagerly awaiting my new Studio XPS 16 laptop.

I've been told by Dell Sales that they don't include any CD/DVDs.

I'm not going to lose any sleep over this.

But I do plan to format the machine and reinstall the OS to avoid all that other junk they install.

Has anyone done this and are there any gotcha's or things to do, to avoid the the destruction of the world as we know it? :D

I was wondering how to do this as well, since I plan on doing the same when I receive mine.

Nah, Dell will no longer be providing those disks for Win 7 systems anymore. Kinda sad really as it is always cool to have all those things handy. Here's where Dell states it: HERE. And here's a THREAD on NBR that discusses that change. You might be able to call them up and maybe request the disks. Worth a try ...

Just torrent a copy of whatever version you have the license key for and burn an .iso image.

I've got a MSDN account so. Windows 7 isn't an issue. I'm more concerned about what I need to save off the HDD before I format it. Anything I need to run and/or register?

I was told that there's a recovery partition.

I did a clean install on my 1645 last night and it went better than most systems. I used the disc that came with my replacement (not sure why you wouldnt get one...) and actually had full functionality without using the drivers disc. went to support.dell.com and downloaded all the new drivers and its running like a dream.

I think in NZ/Australia there are some laws in place that mean that they must include the disks.

Interesting. So it would seem some people get them and others don't? In the event that I wouldn't receive them and wanted/ needed to do a clean install, would I just be forced to do what was listed above?

I don't really need it but I suppose it might come in handy. I don't suppose you have a link to any articles which state this?

You would just have to get a hold a a windows 7 disc somewhere i.e internet, friend, etc and then just use the key on the bottom of your laptop. I would bet they will send you one though

I hope so. Because I'm very picky and if it's not up to the task I'll send it back straight away.
