A couple of weeks ago I ordered a SXPS 16 for my wife's birthday. I tried to time it just right so it would get to us on or right before her birthday. Well I lucked out because it gave an estimated delivery date of 9/16/09 which is the day before her birthday (I'm sure she will be just fine not having anything to open ON the day of her birthday...especially since it's a new laptop lol).
Well....the delivery date this morning was updated to OCTOBER 12th. So it's not going to be here for over a month from now? What gives? When I called Dell the guy said that he'll try to find out within the next day or so what is causing the delay. That's fine that he's going to try to find out....but you're telling me that it's going to take a full 24 hours or more to get that information? I don't buy it. Dell is a huge company and I'm quite certain they've done this to other people in the past. Getting this kind of information should be refined into an artform by now...in my opinion.
So...can anyone speculate what it could be? I'm leaning towards the HDD issues (we ordered the 500gb 7200 rpm seagate)...and if that's the case I hope they can just throw one of the 320gb 7200 rpm ones in instead. After reading about all the issues with the 500gb I think I'd rather just go for the 320 anyway.
Has anyone here ever been delayed like this? A month delay seems excessive and I'm hoping it's just a glitch in their computer system. If they don't give me the answers that I'm looking for then I will most likely cancel my order and get an ASUS model from newegg instead.
Hopefully Dell will pull through on this one...but from their customer service history (hit or miss in most cases) I'm not counting on anything yet.

I ordered my computer on August 23rd, and it was due to be delivered on September 10th. About a week ago I got an email saying the order had been delayed and it would get here on September 17th instead... But when I logged in at Dell.com a few days ago, I saw that my order had been shipped! It was delivered yesterday, September 9th, though unfortunately I wasn't home to sign for it so I'm getting it today. Although my delay was only a week rather than a month, the computer still ended up getting here earlier than the original date. There is hope!
-
So they sent you an email to let you know that the date was changing? I didn't even get that courtesy. I found out because I checked the order status page and to my amazement overnight it mysteriously added almost a month.
After a couple of phone calls to Dell I still don't know why it's being delayed. The manufacturing team hasn't indicated a backorder on a part or anything like that. So to me it sounds like they want another month to build it because they just don't feel like doing it yet. Very annoying and frustrating. I just hope to hear some sort of reason...and I hope to hear it soon. This is the third computer we've ordered from Dell and that's what my wife really wants but we're not willing to wait an extra month for it. Newegg is getting closer and closer to getting our money... -
PS. What is that bug in your avatar? Just curious...looks like something I definitely don't want to see in person. lol
-
That's quite the risk you took, haha, but you really did luck out when the estimated shipping date was a day before your wife's birthday.

Just got off the phone with the barely English speaking Dell representative, and the reason he gave me my order is being delayed is due to a GLOBAL shortage of the cpu that I ordered. The cpu is the T9600 2.8 GHz processor. I believe I'm having smoke blown up my rear end because I find it extremely difficult to believe that this very common cpu is under a global shortage. Especially since I can order it directly from newegg as of right now with no problem. Some shortage, eh?

Dell is seriously the only company to do this. Two years ago I ordered an Inspiron 1520 I think it was and it got delayed so many times it wasn't funny. Their first excuse being the "Midnight Blue" cover which I could understand. The 2nd being the processor go figure? Order was placed early August 2007 with an Estimated ship date of the 31st. On the 31st it got delayed til October so I called and the guy gave me 2nd day shipping. Waited til early September to only find out it got pushed to the END OF October when the order was originally placed early August. I canceled and that was it.
Hopefully yours will get to you soon. If not I would cancel because thats ridiculous. How come HP doesn't experience delays like this? -

That's kind of weird they didn't send you an update if you registered at Dell.com and whatnot. I got mine with the 2.8 GHz processor as well, so maybe that's why mine got delayed. If that's the case, it might be more of a "precautionary delay" like with mine if they aren't sure they can get the part quickly, but they actually might get it much sooner than that. I dunno, that's the best I can come up with.
LOL, the bug in my avatar is a Lethocerus sp. (giant water bug) I found while I was in Australia in July. But don't think you're safe just because you don't live down there - nearly identical species are found throughout the world! -
Meh, Dell's initial ETA tends not to be very accurate. Some people (e.g. yourself) experience setbacks in the ETA whereas other (e.g. me
) have received products early (by ~2 weeks for my SXPS
). Hopefully it does arrive sooner than that though. A shortage on the T9600 does seem a bit odd.

Well, the delivery date has been adjusted to 9/23 now....which is only a 1 week delay. But after all of this....it's still not good enough. We'll see what they have to say in a few hours when I call. -
Good luck dude, I hope it gets to you this week.
-
Mine was originally ordered August 7th to arrive on the 24th. It got delayed until Sept 14th and it is scheduled to arrive on Tuesday the 15th by Purolator. I have the T9600 configured in mine...

Well...I haven't cancelled yet. Finally someone from Dell actually called me back. She was the supervisor of the guy I first talked to yesterday. She said my order will start to be put together today as the status of it is "valid to build" which I guess means that they have all the parts on hand now (she even told me that they had the cpu).
She talked me into waiting until Monday to make a decision on whether to cancel or not. Supposedly they find out two days prior to a computer's shipping. She wouldn't guarantee me that I would get it next week but she made sure to put a note on my order that it needs to get to me by my wife's birthday. So I guess Monday we'll know if we get it next week or not....I sure hope they can make this happen. Overnight shipping on a laptop from newegg is quite expensive... -
Weird everyone else's computers are getting delayed when I ordered mine with the same processor (after spud387 even) and somehow got mine early...
-
Hey largefarva, did you say they ask you whether you wanna cancel your order?
-
Yup they sure did.
-
don't take that too seriously, i ordered mine on 8/31 along with the mini 10v, the shipping dates were 9/21. ended up getting both on the 10th
-
I was told that the earliest that my order could ship would be on 9/16 (the original delivery date btw) and that's only if it started getting built this past Friday and was finished by Monday.
-
Ok...it's Monday and I got an update this morning. Over the weekend my order was completed, and it was in the final stages of production which means it was being transferred to the United States....that was this morning. Status page said it was "In Production" until about 4 hours ago as of the last time I checked. So to me that said it would be Thursday or Friday of a delivery date...which I was fine for.
Well, I just checked a few minutes ago and the status page said "Shipped" with a Fedex tracking number. Delivery date of tomorrow by 3PM central time. Who knew it could get here to the US THAT quick. lol I'm not going to complain....it's getting here sooner than they said it would. My pissed off factor is way down now....Dell actually pulled through and my wife can have the computer of her dreams. -
