Vista was running ok since I bought my XPS M1210 back last September but I never really liked it even after I configured the way I wanted it. The other day my system was randomly messed up. I could not play media files, vista would not read my CPU or ram information and my network connect had a red X on it even though I was still connected. When I tried to click on the network connections it would freeze my system. I had enough of this vista crap and reformatted and installed XP SP3. I should have installed XP as soon as I got my laptop. I have a WD Scorpio 320 GB HD and it would make a clicking sound every 10 seconds or so in Vista. This is a know issue with those drives. Well come to find out it dose not do this anymore with XP installed and was an issue with Vista and not the drive. Another issue is that the Core 2 processors would make a high pitched sound with Vista (everyone knows about this problem). Yes I had it solved using RM clock. Well with XP it dose not make the high-pitched sound. Also performance is improved with XP. All in all I'm 110% happy I went back to XP.

FYI both those things are not related to the operating system. The drive click is related to the drive speed/performance setting in the BIOS and the CPU whine has to do with power states. I have an XPS M1330 and the whine is present in both XP and Vista. Have not spent much time in Slax, so I haven't heard it there yet, but I suspect once I configure everything properly, it will be there too.

Thats... nice... I think there may have been problems with your installation of Vista because many do not have those problems.

I didn't change anything in my BIOS. The only thing that changed was my OS and the drive click has stoped.

If you seriously want XP... ok. Though I still recommend Vista as I stated in my earlier post, it probably was a problem with the OS installation itself that caused it.

Another thing to note is that you should definitely disable caching in Vista as it is one of Vista's renown features in order to speed up search and a variety of other processes, however it does require more frequent access to the hard drive, which is most likely the main cause of it.

Of course if your happy with XP... well... alrighty then.

I also ripped the Vista installation off my 1330 xps, and installed XP. The stupid high pitch sound went away.

I ran Vista for 3-4 months trying to like it. I could not stand it. XP runs lightning fast in comparison to Vista.

I encourage all power users to dump vista and go for xp.

When I was talking to a Tech, they said it's fine to go back to Xp, just make sure that you call them up for a free Vista disc though. They said if there is a problem with it, Xp will void your warranty.

I'm dual booted with XP Pro and Vista Ultimate. While I tend to use XP most often, Vista is a nice change of pace and I'm slowly growing to like it AGAIN (my M1710 came with Vista). I have three partitions. One for XP. One for Vista and one for data files (including pst files, Favorites etc).

It's only a matter of time before MS finally gets the bugs out of it and XP will be a distant memory. It's been one stubborn OS that simply won't go away because it's a good one. Vista will be better...some day!
