    Hi,

I've had my Dell XPS for over a year and a half now. No complaints with the system, especially after upgrading to Windows 7, but now I need a new battery.

The 9 cell and 6 cell that I originally bought with the system have been depleted so much that even with the laptop plugged in, the battery will not charge and obviously, both are way beyond the warranty date. Which leaves me with no other option but to purchase a new battery.

I checked out the dell website and the prices of their the replacement batteries is ridiculous. Plus all the reviews that are posted up there, echo the same sentiment, the the battery will die after a year and will no longer be able to be charged with the AC adapter.

I have seen other websites offer batteries that are compatible with the XPS system. So basically my question is has anyone purchased batteries that have not been manufactured by Dell? If so, were there any adverse effects to your system? Which ones would you recommend?

    Thanks

I'm in the same situation with the same question. I've seen 9 cells on ebay for around $50 which is fairly reasonable, but I'd like to hear from someone on here that these batteries are just as long-lasting and legit as the batteries I could buy from Dell (though with my battery losing 2/3rds its useful life after a little over a year, I think it really couldn't get much worse).

It is a shame there have been no replies on this thread as it could be a useful one.....unless there is a generic battery thread elsewhere. I have a similar issue with my Dell XPS M1330 in that the Dell quickset application has just started complaining that the battery is at the end of it's useful life and whilst it will charge ok it will not hold onto it's charge that long. I guess this is true as I am getting about 1hr basic web use (including wi-fi & bluetooth) out of the 6 cell battery.

Dell quickset quotes an average battery life of between 300-500 charge cycles....which is pretty rubbish considering I use my laptop pretty every day. The laptop is about 2years old now so I guess I am due a new battery.

Whilst Dell does not seem to have the WR050 6Cell battery on it's UK site, the 4cell is a whopping £79.01 and the 9cell is £109 so I can guess the 6cell will be around £95-100. The Dell 6cell battery is rated at 56WHr (this equates to about 5045mAh) and the cheapest I can find this original battery elsewhere is £63.24.

Having looked around the web, most sites only sell un-branded aftermarket batteries and these are rated at either 4400mAh or 4800mAh. Price wise they start around £45.00 but can rise to £70-80 on some sites !!!. I have also found the 9-cell versions for less than the 6cell on the same sites.

Looking at all of these sites, the first obvious point is that these replacement batteries start with less capacity than the original Dell part. The strange thing is that pretty much all these sites quote equivalent / better performance but this is impossible based on this rating. I have also found that when I have bought other non-branded batteries that these claims tend to be rubbish and they use cheaper / less superior cells which last no where near as much as the orginal when new.

I guess this is the ultimate decision. Is the £20 difference in price worth the reduced capacity performance of the orginal battery? If it is then buy the original battery....if not then a non-branded is the way forward.

This topic has been discussed many times before on this forum try searching it may help you all.
By the way yes I have used an unbranded battery on M1330 XPS without issues. No it was not my laptop but a closed friend and the battery still in use to date.

@smjohns while you may find some so call cheap built or inferior batteries not all fit this build. Some use the same source as some of the well known brands or some may be Grade A/B where the battery casing may not be up to standards of let's say Dell/Sony but still usable.
But yes be careful whom you buy them from checkout the sale's feedback make phone call drop an email for info etc.

I have bought a battery from eBay and it said it even had the built-in meter. Just search with 'OEM' included. When I bought my 1530 it came with an additional 9 cell battery. The first battery is running down quick.. only 2.5 hours running time and depletes fast and surprisingly the second one is holding charge like it's brand new after a year and a half. I just hope Dell still sells these batteries after the warranty runs out... one and a half years from now.

I have just bought a battery from a china supplier on ebay:

    http://stores.shop.ebay.co.uk/Uright-Youre-right-Laptop-Battery__W0QQ_armrsZ1

Apparently they source them from the Dell Factory Supplier. Whilst I was concerned at purchasing this way, the shop seller had plenty of good feedback and was quick to answer all my queries. The fact that most of these batteries are manufactured in China anyway....it seemed to make sense.

I have a 10-15 day wait to see if I have wasted £35 lol.
