Well, my XPS M1330 has had the motherboard replaced like 4 times, and a rep offered me a replacement.
I never got a call back with an offer, but I checked my Dell Account and it shows an Studio XPS 13 (M1340) "In Process"

The only upgrade I can find is the CPU (2.0Ghz to 2.4Ghz) but I'm loosing out on the battery (I have a 9 Cell and the replacement has a 6 cell) and the cover (I had the optional Blue Cover, and the replacment comes with the non-leather accent which is standard)
I'm not too concerned, but how good of a replacement is this compared to my old system?
Also, can anyone tell what graphics card the M1340 has? even if its only a 9400M, its better than the 8400M GS that keeps killing my computer
-
Dont you just love how Dell makes everything simple and easy? i just cant get around this list... its bloody hard to identify what graphics card you will get.
The SXPS m1340, from what ive heard, is a VERY nice laptop, much nicer than the m1330. It has better performance, a better gfx card ( could be you are getting only a 9400, or the hybrid SLi of a 9200 and a 9400 = a 9500.)
if your worried about your 9 cell battery, just call dell to tell them, the rule is you have to get a system with equal or better specs, no less. -
Yeah.. I have to give them a ring
I don't really give a about the battery or cover, but it'd be nice if they upgraded my graphics card to a G10M in exchange..
I occasionally play games on the laptop (Left 4 Dead 2, CS:S) and my M1330 did a decent job. I've read the 9400M is better than the 8400M GS, so its not a loss if I get that, but I've heard the 9500M is worse than the 9400M..
I'm so happy about getting it tho, the M1330 looks soo outdated, and the M1340 look a ton better..
Just gotta extend my warranty now -
Well, the 9500 can't be worse than the 9400 because the system has both and uses them in a hybrid setup.
Honestly, the 210 isn't going to be that much of a factor over the 9400 in that system. -
Even if they refuse, its better than having a laptop that needs a new motherboard every 2-3 months.
I'm still torn between asking for the leather or just getting the non leather.. It'd be nice, but its going to be my school laptop for the next 4 years, and I know leather loves to crack and scratch easily.
Just gotta buy Complete Care for 3 years and I'll be good for school. -
Personally, I hate the leather and was very pleased when they offered the all plastic lid
-
i would go with the 210, but the 9400 is still a very decent gfx card. -
As long as it will play Left 4 Dead 2 and Counter Strike Source decently, I'm happy -
-
I gotta call them when I get home.. I didn't even know about this replacement till this morning. I logged into dell to get their XPS #, and I see an order.
Is the 9 cell Battery like the M1330's?
Also, will an M1340 fit in a M1330 Sleeve. I bought one of the XPS Sleeves off Ebay, and would like to use it for the 1340 -
good luck.
-
Update:
I never called Dell, but the order was pending since the 3rd. Logged into my Dell account to get my m1330 service tag (I was at work) and I saw the M1340 order CANCELLED and a new one placed..
But.. Its for a Studio XPS 16.

I REALLY like the specs, but the size is kinda making me think either way. It was shipped overnight Today, so it'll be here Monday.
Does Dell have like a 30 day decide period? I'm gonna pack up the M1330 and send it back when the new one gets here, but in case I don't want the Studio XPS 16, can't I just send it back and they will give me a Studio XPS 13 -
If I were you I'd take the 16 and run, MUCH more powerful machine.
-
I got the SXPS 16 today..
I love it
Got the ATi HD 4670 1GB Graphics, 2.93Ghz CPU and 6gb of RAM..
Plays Left4Dead 2 and CS:S Perfectly! A helluva lot better than the m1330!
Dell is definatally the only place I will buy a laptop from again! -
Very nice shadow. I would definelty take the XPS 16 anytime.
As for me, my m1330 is also being replaced with a m1340 and it's been "in production" since Dec 5th. I can't believe it's taking them this long while my defective m1330 is totally unusable. -
Does anyone know how long "in production" should last? Mine's been stuck on Dec 5th. All I've been told each of the 3 times I've called is that they have no further information besides it being "in production". Very frustrating.
-
-
Thanks again Koer. I hope I get this before Xmas...........
-
Nice new laptop. I am definitely envious. I also got a System Exchange, although I am coming from an XPS m1530, the bigger version of your laptop. I ordered it with higher specs (my m1530 came with a T9500), but didn't get as big of an upgrade as you (I got a T9600, whereas you got a T9800, and 4GB vs the 6GB you got). However I understand that with Dell it has to deal with what they have on hand and etc etc etc. I'd rather not have to argue with Dell and send this thing back over and over. Especially for a CPU that's .13GHz faster, and 2GB more RAM (although maybe I can haggle them to just send me the memory modules and I can install them myself...
)
I agree that it is kind of frustrating a little bit though, reading through the specs list. You got a 1600x900 resolution screen. They also goofed up for me and sent me my 1640 with a 6 cell (which strangely shows a capacity of 5100mWh whereas my 9 cell on my 1530 showed 86000...). They are also sending me a 9 cell as a exchange.
Best of luck! Enjoy it! -
I think they're sending out 6 cells because their site shows that 9 cells will "delay shipment" which to me means they're out of stock or backordered
-
I'm in a similar position.. I sent in my M1530 (Intel Core Duo 2.0 GHz, 4GB RAM) for repairs to a cracked screen and was notified that the label Dell had provided me with specified an incorrect warehouse and as a result they have forever lost my computer and would hence be 'upgrading' my laptop. Strange screw-up... I'm unsure what they will provide me with, but it looks from this forum like I would be getting a Studio XPS 16.
-
Sorry to hear about that. I strongly encourage you though to make sure that everything is "equal or better" specifications wise.
-
Thanks, I certainly will. I'm a little worried since the service tag for my old laptop online shows that there are no specs associated with the system (It hasn't always showed no specs, just recently when I checked). This means that I'm unable to access any of the information pertaining to my computer since I don't have it in email form (and I'll never get the computer itself back). Do they have access to this information?
Additionally, would they listen if I believe the laptop they give me doesn't match up in terms of quality to the XPS I lost? I should be getting the laptop around Christmas (awesome present) - so I'm assuming I could check the specs online a couple days before that based on this topic. -
I believe that you should remain calm, yet assertive when you speak with them. If the specs are not equal or better, then clearly there is a problem. For example, my 1640 that I got came with a 6 cell, whereas my m1530 came with a 9 cell. Another thing I would suggest is to use Dell Chat, it is easier (you can read the english instead of trying to hear through the accent if any), and faster (at least, initially. Agents take time to type).
-
I never got mad at the CSR, but I did tell her how vital it was to have my computer as it was for work and that I am going on vacation and would like to bring a computer with me.
Still gotta call them to get a 9-Cell, but I'm not too worried
