Hello everyone.
I have been provided with 2 options for the replacement of my 1645
1. XPS 15 with 3 yr extended warranty
2. AW 14 (well i am not sure which AW they would offer me but i guess its AW 14)
Refund is out of option as its a international warranty case. I am currently in India and my orignal laptop is from USA. (Can i convince them to give me refund for international case??)
Well I am not a hardcore gamer. I game occasionally only. So the XPS is good for me in that department.
The AW is heavy aswell. The XPS suits my needs well, the only the problem is build quality. My 1645 had better build quality as compared to XPS.
Also even with same config the AW is too costly as compared to XPS. So if I am able to sell it i would get good money. But here in India its not that easy to sell a Laptop.
I use the Laptop for coding, watching movies,VMware .... etc and occasional gaming like FIFA 11...
So which Laptop should i get, I am tilting towards XPS 15. I need your opinions. Why would AW be better than XPS in my case ??.
Also i am planning to sell either Laptop (AW for sure if i decide to go for it as i am no gamer) so any Indian buyers please pm me aswell.

From my point of view, thumps up to AW M14x.
Infact, you can even see that the GPU in the M14x is better than the XPS. Also, don't forget the AlienFX lighting controls, nameplate, etc. Build quality is better in the AW too.
So to sum it up, AW > XPS.
Also don't forget that you may be getting a 1600MHz RAM if you go with the AW. The decent design, when coupled with unique lighting controls can easily beat the rather ugly and clumsy design the XPS has. My recommendation would be AW.
And according to your build quality issues, the AW will give you much better build quality than your 1645. -
I concur. I think it will be better for you to go for the AW M14X. Don't have second thoughts though.

But the problem is display and weight.
A 14" display as compared to 15.6" RGBLED display on XPS.
Also both weigh the same.
Plus I get 3 year warranty on th XPS.
Also as I have stated i am not a gamer. Better GPU wouldn't help me. Battery Life, Build Quality, Display is what that matters. -

Perhaps, no one can have the best of all worlds. If you want a thing, you've to lose a thing.
So in the AW case,
Profit:
1) Build quality
2) Better GPU (555M)
3) Uniqueness over clumsiness of XPS 15
4) Lighting controls, Laser Nameplate
5) Possibly better heat management
6) Better resale value (as you said)
Loss:
1) Display (900p vs 1080p)
2) Warranty (3 Yr VS 1 Yr)
So you get 6 and just lose 2. So by this, you can treat yourself to choose the M14x. -
@Lakshya : You seem to be a bigg fan of Alienware. Had you been in my shoes you would have pulled the trigger already
To tell you more, First they offered me XPS 15 which I declined to which they said you can have XPS 15 with 3 year complete care or have a look at the AW series
So they actually haven't yet said that it me to look at 14" or 17". They can give me a 17" aswell (and there are very high chances of that as my system is 16" and 17 is closer to 16).
So then what would me your answer.
Also plz dont just look from the gamers perspective as i am not a gamer. I dont like the design of AW aswell. I would rather prefer XPS. But performance is one thing that AW and XPS wont be comparable. -
Well, @parthg: (sorry for going off-topic) I've had alot of experiences with replacements. I had 2 choices of replacements for my studio 1458, the one was the XPS 14 (i7 740QM, 2GB graphics) and the other was the XPS 15 (i5 460M, 1GB graphics). Considering the screen issues of the XPS 14, and that the studio 14 had a better screen than the XPS, one would go with the XPS 15, but considering the performance margin by going with the XPS 14 instead of 15, I had to surrender myself and go for the XPS 14.
But Parth, since you're not sure if you'll be getting an AW 14 or 17, so if they give you AW 14, you always have an excuse that 14 inch is way too small for me, and that the AW 17 has got a comparable screen (1080p), and thus AW 14 won't be a good match. -
Yes i can always do that I know as 17" is closer to 16".
But the bigger question is should i do that??
I have seen warranty extensions of AWs go over 15k and i certainly cant afford it.
I also lose portability AWs.
I am kind of in a fix here.
If I had to buy a new Laptop that i would have certainly gone fore XPS as its cheap and the best multimedia laptop of all. All these problems are arising because i am going to get it as a replacement ie for free
Ahhh I am certainly in a fix here.
And I have to tell them tomorrow morning what i want.
Also 1 more Question, You are from India aswell na ??
Where do you think I can successfully sell a Laptop in india. Unboxed or boxed.
In India ppl dont tend to buy laptop/computers from anywhere other than dealer. Ebay is not popular in India. -
My brother got a refund, same case, laptop from USA and he was in India at time. Don't lose hope, he got a full refund

I wish I had your choice dilemma I had an xps 14 for 2 months after trying to repair 6 times in 3 weeks dell said they would send a replacement finaly!Except that they discontinued the xps14 a month after I got it,now they are sending me a xps15 without my input whatsoever,I paid for a 14 I want a 14.Dell strikes again,I wasnt given a choice I saw on my account the 15.My 14 cost more than a 15 when available,I wish I could get an m14x,I have to contact dell for the 7th time I didnt use this laptop for 2 months why do I get whatever they feel like giving me?I wish you luck with whatever you choose,I personaly love Alienware if they had the 14x when I got my xps I would have gotten that for sure!Anyway I think thats awesome they let you choose, thats the way it should be.

What exchange rates they used ??
Well i guess your reply was bit late. I accepted the XPS 15 they offered me finally. I anted something in 15"-16" form factor and portable. AW 14 weighs as much as XPS 15 and its screen size is smaller also it doesn't have that B+RG LED screen that is so good.
