Can I get my Studio XPS 16 replaced in the future for free, or at least for a lower price with the newest versions when major updates take place?

Would the laptop have to have some sort of hardware issue before a replacement is offered?

    Short answer: no.

I think you need to have had at least three services on the machine before they'll even consider a replacement. Even then, depending on when this happens, you might just get the same machine.
