    XPS1640.

Windows 8 x64 (no 8.1 preview), though this happened under Windows 7 as well so I doubt the OS has anything to do with it (unless it's just a core failure of the whole Windows OS).

Synaptics 16.3.15.1 downloaded from Synaptics themselves (so not Dell).

Mobility Modded Catalyst 13.1 Legacy (HD3670).

I've run the Intel INF Update Utility (chipset).

I have a feeling it has something to do with hibernate re-initializing devices in a way that resuming from Sleep doesn't (so the touchpad "wakes up" properly in the first case but not the second).

If I repeatedly put the computer to sleep, then wake it up, eventually the pointer will appear. If I restart, the pointer reappears. If I Hibernate after a missing-pointer Sleep resume, then wake it up, the pointer reappears. If I plug in a USB mouse, the pointer will appear as well if it is currently missing.

    What gives?
