I searched the "Dell XPS and Studio XPS" for "3D" ... hoping I would not have to start a new thread ... but surprisingly nothing came up.

I want to order, ASAP, a 17" sandy bridge XPS in full HD (1920x1080) but don't plan to use the 3D feature much (or at all).

The reviews I've seen of the lower res screen (1600x900) are not all that great (contrast, etc.) ... and I'm hoping that the "3D" full HD screen -- used in 2D mode -- will be better.

So please post any URLs for reviews of the 3D screen here ... or any personal opinions based on actual hands-on experience !

    Thanks :)

Check one of the L702X threads. Several people have said the LCD is very good.

It is very bright and sharp. Identicle to my AU Optronics B173HW01 v4 (Dell Part# X919N) on my Studio 1747 and upgraded L701x. It is worth the cost. ;)

Search on this site seems to be borked for me, at least .... seaching the string "L702X"or "L702X screen" comes up empty ... which is nuts, since it is easy to spot threds with L702X in the name

Anyway if you see an actual post on the HD screen, can you post the link here ?

    Thanks,

    Ron

The out of the box screen configuration is horrible. After calibrating, the screen is quite nice.

How do you calibrate? Are you speaking from the viewpoint of someone who is editing photos, etc. ?

I will be using this laptop to watch 1080p content (movies, shows, ect). I just used the nvidia control panel and windows color management to calibrate the screen.

Honestly, as incredibly useful and informative as these forums are, they probably have the single worst search feature of any forum or general search engine that I use. The results are terrible - unrelated to what you searched for - and, seriously, over half the time, I'm told I have to wait 15 seconds between searches even though I did not search 15 seconds prior. It boggles the mind. Oh, well.

Seriously, though, the forums are still great. It's just that what you stated here rings true to pretty much all of my search experiences here, so I thought I'd comment to let you know you're not alone. :]

    1080p 3D screen is a LG LGD02C5 panel
gamut quality: 70.0% NTSC, 89.5% sRGB, 69.2% Adobe RGB.

It does not come close to the 1080p B+RG LED panel that can be ordered on the XPS 15, but it sure is not bad for a WLED panel in my opinion.

For manual calibration, visit LCD monitor test images

Looks like it has the same LG panel which is featured in the HP Envy 17 3D that has been reviewed by notebookcheck (german) and the following specs were reported:
    Maximum: 394 cd / m²
    Average: 376.2 cd / m²
    Uniformity: 89%
    Black: 0.66 cd / m²
    Contrast: 597:1

Are you sure the panel you list above is in a L702x you have seen? If so, can you get a pic?

I show the 1080p panel in my USA based L702x here: http://forum.notebookreview.com/del...702x-fhd-3d-1080p-display-panel-assembly.html

Update: Yes, it seems the firmware on the LP173WF2 shows it as a LGD02C5 in the hardware ID string. Interesting...

If you are having issues with the search engine here, you can try google.

At the google search input text box, type the following.

    l701x screen site:notebookreview.com

l701x screen is the keyword you want to search and the "site:notebookreview.com" is the site that you want the results from.

    Hope this helps

I guess it all depends on what you compare the screen too. Compared to my 3 year old Inspiron 1720 screen, the view angles of the L702x screen (3D 1080p at 60hz) are horrible. But you probably won't find a better screen in any consumer notebook these days.

I was wondering if you could do a side by side test with the B173HW01 v4 and the 3D screen playing the same movie. I'm wondering how the black levels and viewing angles compare. Also looking at some tests it looks like the 3D screen is brighter than the other, is this the case when they are both turned up all the way? Dying to know before I make a final decision on an upgrade.

Not to hijack the thread, but this seemed a better place to ask than starting a new thread...

Have any of you with the 1080p 3D FHD screens noticed any imperfections in the surface? I just got mine and it's not flat. Is that normal for these screens?

What I mean is, it's very hard to notice but there are diagonal lines running along the entire surface evenly. It almost looks like something is behind the screen. Imagine laying the screen over corrugated cardboard, and you get what I mean. It's really noticeable when looking at reflections with the screen off. The reflections are jagged and distorted.

this doesn't affect the picture quality much, but I think i can still notice it with the screen on.

Just trying to see if this is how it's supposed to be, or if I got a defective screen...

    :(

so basically, Dell has poor quality control. Great. They also did not include the 3D glasses, but that's a whole other issue...

Do you just mean that reflections are rippled? I've seen that on every glossy LCD I've had, including those not from Dell. The screen is meant to show the pixels, not reflect, so I'm not sure why they'd do QC for acting like a mirror.

When looking at e.g. a reflected window in the display, I notice the same behaviour. The "lines" go at an angle of approx. 60-70 degrees. I'm sure this is absolutelly normal, this display is very close to the best display I ever had, which was on a HP laptop and had similar "lines" obviously all the time, today is the first time I noticed them.

So no reason to complain if you have a mirror other than your laptop :D

Ok, thanks for the reply. I'm just picky when spending this much on a laptop, and have had bad experiences with DELL and Alienware before Dell bought them. I've never seen this on even glossy screens, and this is the first glossy I bought. As long as it doesn't affect the picture it's all good with me I guess. I thought it affected picture as well, but may be just my imagination.

Anyway, thanks. So far the display is working fine, aside from the fact that Dell did not include the 3D glasses or even give me the option to buy them (military sales).

I'm picky when it comes to picture quality and this is pretty good. Now that I know it's normal for the screen to be "textured", I'm a bit more at ease with the purchase. I was looking for a portable blu-ray player/computer for occasional gaming and work. For the price, this is perfect. 3D is not a factor when it comes to the picture quality in 2D mode, 60hz or 120hz.
