That's exactly what I did. The Roxio that's included with the laptop isn't even full functioning to begin with. I got Nero Ultimate on sale for $40 CDN a couple of weeks ago. A bargain!

The problem is that because they are free versions they are usually the version behind the latest and greatest. Unfortunately with this corresponding with a new and fundamentally different OS it's a joke. Dell shouldn't be supplying Vista Incompatible software on Vista machines. Doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure that one out.

Get yourself Nero 8 and get rid.

Or you could flag them both and go with freeware that does the same job!

Check out ImgBurn ( http://www.imgburn.com/). It is free, lightweight, compatible (I've used it in XP, Vista 32bit and Vista 64bit) and does everything I've ever needed for writing CD's or DVD's.

If you want to rip DVD's, use DVD Decrypter ( http://www.dvddecrypter.org.uk/). It seems to report an error after ripping under Vista 64bit. The error is cosmetic only though.

For ripping music, just use iTunes... nuff said.

Roxio is your problem. I haven't used it for years now because it's turned into a craptastic piece of software.

I uninstalled the Dell version and loaded my own full version of EMC10. No problems.

I've always had problems in the past with Roxio and this one is no different. I just wiped it off my HD. It is free alright as it is not worth anything. I don't know why Dell uses junk sometimes.

'ImgBurn' is a great alternative, however in my opinion if you are already accustomed to the logical interface used by both Roxio and Nero commercial burning softwares, you will likely find the transition to (the also free) 'InfraRecorder' a much easier one, as its interface is considerably less of a headache to work with.

    Available here: http://infrarecorder.sourceforge.net/

In any case, with both programs offering free functionality, you would lose nothing to trial them both. From what I have personally found, InfraRecorder is the easier to use of the two, whilst ImgBurn is ever so slightly more feature rich.
