I live in the UK and the 150w adapter that I bought from ebay is an official dell part - PA-15 family, model: PA-1151-06D. And yes, with this and Throttlestop (And also remembering to put the laptop to 'sleep' for a couple of seconds after booting up then reawakening it to get round the keyboard driver issue) It cuts through pretty much any game I throw at it with High or Max settings.

Cant you just use a adapter on the end of the cord? The 130 and 90 are rated for 100 to 240 volts. what is the voltage in your house?

    Dell Adapter HERE

Thanks!! This worked like a charm! I can't believe putting it to sleep after activating throttlestop and THEN playing the game fixes the performance issues. WOW.

But UK/Ireland got diferent adapters then rest of europe.
hmm okay. I noticied now that i got the 3 pin adapter. We got 220 volts in our house. So i order the http://www.eforcity.com/universal-to-europe-travel-plug-adaptor-cothplugeu01.html then i can order http://accessories.euro.dell.com/sn...detail.aspx?c=se&l=sv&cs=sedhs1&sku=450-10540 or will this also work http://accessories.euro.dell.com/sn....aspx?c=se&l=sv&s=dhs&cs=sedhs1&sku=450-11331 ?

What exactly to tell dell if you want a free adapter?

How are you getting that framerate in Crysis or DA? lol I got Crysis a few days ago and average around 20 frames in low action areas... In Dragon Age I can keep a consistent 30 with AA on 2x

this was the reason for cancellation... if there is a difference in the wireless performance... is it really worth it? (est delivery date and all the hassle involved).. how difficult is to change the wireless card. I can buy it off ebay and put it in meself..

Extremely simple. If you're going to get a new one, however, I would put up with the crap for a month or so and pick up the 6300 when it comes out. Or you can buy my 5300 off of me, as I'm certainly getting the 6300! :)

6300 is the next generation of wireless cards.
And yes, like I said above, it's extremely simple to swap wireless cards.

Happy Non-Denomination Winter Season to all those in this thread :) and on NR.

I was under the impression that the 5300 was one of the best wireless cards on the market in laptops right now. I mean these things are minimal They might allow greater bandwidth usage over WiFi however most people get limited via the router and not just the wireless card. Direct Connection ftw

Whoever came up with this solution of putting it to sleep is a genius. The AW M15x has a very similar throttling problem. I solved the GPU throttling by using RivaTuner to force the 3D clocks but I couldn't figure out how to keep the active state at 100% for the CPU. Well I just turned on i7 Turbo, put the computer in sleep mode and afterwards ran Prime 95 + Furmark and it kept the CPU at 55-100% active state with the GPU running overclocked at 620/1550/950! Before the CPU wouldn't get above 35-50% so this definitely helps. Temps are very stable as well, the GPU hits a max of 85C (well below the max limit of 110C) under this grueling load and the CPU cores are around 66-67C. Now if we could only figure out a way to keep the CPU pegged at 100% that would be perfect.

Edit: I noticed that if i use throttlestop and set the clock modulation to 87% the load stays at 89% and does not move! Kevin, is there a way you can modify throttlestop to include incremental changes in the clock modulation function (e.g. 99-98-97-96%) or is it fixed? I'd love to test and see at what % modulation I can keep the active load stable.

    It's 230 Watts (19.5v, 11.8A), came with my XPS M1730

    Thanks

Does Dell have a whitelist for wireless network cards? I remember having to flash a custom bios on my HP to get a wireless N card to go where a wireless G card was originally. A few years back many computer makers were using whitelists in this way (and blaming the FCC for making them do it).

We discovered it around when throttlestop first came available for the i7's. others were keyboard lagging and i was not for some reason, later figured it was because i always sleep the computer. This works for the M15X too? Try to spread the word then, as it renders throttlestop almost useless.

Really wish we could figure out why this is, or at least monitor it. Think with all the utilities we have now days it could show something. I just hope it isnt some bug that gets patched later and screws us down the line.

are you using throttlestop with the m15x? edit: saw your edit nvm hah.

Hi ! I've just seen that there is something wrong with my i7... It looks like I have one of my thermal sensor dead, no? I have only 3 temp results. Do you think I could ask dell to change my i7 for this minor problem (minor but it's a problem...)

    Thanks

ok, wow this is a long thread...

so, i was really close to ordering the xps 1645, but after all this stuff i'm wondering if its worth the hassle.

i'm curious about a few things:

    1) people have been reporting that the temperature increase isn't critical when using throttlestop + 130W adapter, but wouldn't this damage the system in the long run? i'm skeptical about doing anything that would void my warranty on the laptop (besides the fact that i don't see the logic in having to hot-wire a brand new laptop just to make it work correctly)...

    2) was there a throttling issue with the xps 1640 (duo core) model? to my understanding, its the exact same machine as the 1645, just different processors? i'd consider getting the xps 1640 if it means i have something reliable.

RealTemp GT is for the new 6 core Gulftown processors. I thought if people saw one of their cores missing maybe they would look in the download for the regular RealTemp.exe 4 core version. I guess I'll have to add a warning to that one too.

5150Joker: Clock Modulation reduces the internal load in an Intel CPU but can only be adjusted in steps of 12.5%. Think of it as for every 8 clock pulses from the clock generator going to the CPU, clock modulation causes the CPU to start ignoring some of those clock pulses. At 87.5%, it's ignoring 1 out of every 8 clock pulses so the CPU isn't able to get as much work done. The more clock modulation going on, the more clock pulses that the CPU is ignoring. At a clock mod setting of 12.5%, the CPU is ignoring 7 out of 8 clock pulses so the CPU will run nice and cool but it's not accomplishing a hell of a lot when it is that modulated.

As I mentioned before, there are two types of clock modulation in these CPUs. It looks like when you are trying to run your computer really, really hard that the second type of modulation kicks in and really kills performance. You're better off and your computer will accomplish more if you manually set clock modulation to 87.5%. If you don't do this, the second type of modulation will kick in and drop your performance way below this level. Higher core temperatures should be proportional to how hard your CPU is actually working.

During normal gaming, you'll probably get your best performance with a clock modulation setting of 100%. Games don't create the same stress level as Furmark testing does.

Edit: Dropping your multiplier down to 12 might also help you avoid the second type of clock modulation.

    @ninjagrisen, nizam

I think just the voltage has to 19.5V and then any adapter (as long as the physical connector fits) will work.

@unclewebb: Thank you very much for this incredible tool throttlestop. It is really amazing! But one big problem is still there. I can't regulate the fans i.e. with SpeedFan or i8kfangui. Maybe it's possible that you have a solution for that, too? That would be great!

Some HP Envy computers with the i7 have throttling issues too. Do some research before putting your money down. No laptop is perfect. Head to the Asus site too. They're not perfect either.

I haven't heard of too many unhappy 1645 users after they get a 130 watt adapter, learn to use stand by mode and give their laptops a boost with ThrottleStop. Dell may or may not get all the bugs worked out but at least with a little bit of help, the 1645 is very usable.

unclewebb - i appreciate your development of the throttlestop program and it sounds like this is an acceptable solution to the issue(s), but is there any possibility of overheating due to the disabling of the 90W limitation in the BIOS combined with the higher wattage adapter? could it void any warranty that you might have on the machine?

Possibly related issue, my SXPS keeps waking up from hibernate...without me prompting it to do so. It's annoying and potentially hazardous, seeing as I travel with it in my bag and if it were to wake up in there...it would be a laptop suicide. Is anyone else having this issue? It doesn't happen all the time, it's pretty random.

When using ThrottleStop with a 130 watt adapter, both the CPU and GPU temperatures should remain well within the Intel and ATI specifications; even when gaming. The throttling these computers do is designed to protect the included 90 watt adapter that is not sufficient to fully power your computer or recharge your battery when gaming. That's why users see more throttling when plugged in compared to when on battery power.

Maybe. Contact Dell and ask them if you are concerned about this.

Oh boy has this ever been happening to me as well.....

so one of the issues was windows update....it was set to autoupdate at 3am, and in hibernate the system decides to turn on to do the updates....don't ask me why but it does.

This has largely solved my problem although the odd night this still occurs.

From what I read online a bit, it involves the connection of the computer to the internet which wakes up the computer. I kept finding it in sleep mode the next morning, after hibernating the night before.

let me know if this helps!
