*shrugs* I'm only pointing out what I see on their site and the various possibilities. If they were to advertise it as an extreme performer for gaming people would be sorely disappointed, because it isn't. Not that it doesn't run games well just not as much in comparison to the standards of Alienware which I think is where they try to draw the line. I think we all know that the Studio XPS is exactly what it entitles: An inbetween their XPS and Studio line-up meaning medium-high performance.
It would seem wiser anyway to lower expectations so they are inadvertently raised.
I would also keep in mind this is a sales pitch though: They are advertising the best possible condition at their optimal level. But YES they do seem to portray it has the capabilities (which it does) for gaming and graphic intensive programs. Happy?

It feels like the last several pages have been a desperate attempt to disprove or question the 60 pages before it. Sure, I'll bite.
If a Dell rep told me that my machine was not a gaming machine and therefore would not perform as such, I would call BS. That argument is about as fruitful as a Windows/OSX argument. I'm sure no one here is a stranger to what these laptops have inside of them (I won't post anything detailed here, just look at every other signature in this thread).
An i7 processor? Quad-core with hyperthreading? You tell me that this processor is geared towards general web browsing and checking your email, and I'll tell you to leave.
ATi Radeon 4670 Mobility? Mid-range mobile graphics with 1GB of dedicated memory? The hardware speaks for itself. I can run games on this hardware, it just depends if I choose to run TS or not (which directly decides whether I see performance issues or not).
If I wanted a multimedia powerhouse, my old Core2 Duo did that just fine. I don't recall any issues watching DVDs or HD/BD content.
But sure, let's just assume that just because Dell's website doesn't say anything about gaming, that these laptops are definitely not gaming machines. Never. No way. That game your running now? It's a lie. Just like the cake.
The problem with this scenario is I don't have to run games to get this laptop to throttle. I chose the i7 with 6GB of RAM because I'd be able to run multiple virtual machines. Except I can't run more than 1 because the laptop begins to throttle. Would it have made sense to get a C2D laptop for this? No? I agree. (note: Dell's website doesn't say anything about running virtual machines. Dell's website also doesn't say anything about browsing forums. So why are you here? I don't use marketing material as a baseline. That's ridiculous. This argument is invalid. Just forget about it. Let the hardware speak for itself, and you'll quickly find that something doesn't add up in the end.)
Multimedia = visual and audio.
Gaming = visual and audio.
Turning on the computer and doing whatever the heck I want to do with it: visual and audio.
I know this has all been mentioned before, and it pains me to reword this again. It's a mindless argument that's straying away from the topic at hand. I'll agree with bowenandarrow. Definitely a PR plant.
Here's some food for thought: if these laptops aren't throttling, and these power bricks aren't getting hot, how on earth have we maintained 2 dedicated (and one that introduced it) threads with over 350 pages worth of content? I don't wish to deliberate over an issue that is obviously present. I wish to get the issue resolved so we can all move on (whether it be to our liking, where the system runs as advertised and the power supply is ample; or to Dell's liking, where the system runs as they intended: an i7 that pretends it's a pentium, with a preference of temperature and power over quality and performance.) (And by power, I don't mean power saving as the rest of the computing world knows it)

I'm still intrigued by the whole 90W brick temperature thing. I have about 6 of them laying around here. 4 are old (PA-10), and two are new (PA-3E). The old ones get too hot to touch (even on my previous p8700 system). The new one (I've only tried one, the other is still in it's original plastic packaging) doesn't get that hot.
Í ran it at +/- 100W for over an hour the other day, and after that hour I could still touch it, pick it up and hold it. I wouldn't hold it for half an hour, but it was definately touchable. My PA-10 has actually shut itself down while connected to the 1645. It was too hot.
I've read of a lot of people with burning hot PA-3E's. Are you all running 110v or 220v? I'm on 220v, and I'm wondering if that could make any difference. It has been discussed before, and it shouldn't make a difference, but still...
I'm not denying the PA-3E's get hot. Absolutely not, I know the PA-10 get's hot, so why not the PA-3E. It's just that mine doesn't get hot, even at over 90wW (wall-Watts )

And it is better now that I'm running on A05. On A03 it was even worse. It starts throttling later now, and stops quicker (most of the time, not always).
And regarding the power adapter and heat. I think it also depends on how you place the adapter. In theory I think it can handle 110+wW without a problem. But only if you allow it to cool properly. It needs all its surface area to be exposed to air. If I put it on its side, it stays ok, not cool, but also not insanely hot. If you put it down on it's back (like anyone would do) it does get very very hot sometimes. I am talking about the PA-3E here.
Everyone with a hot adapter should try this just for fun.
It does make for a rather silly point though, because we cannot be expected to place the adapter on its side at all times (as it is not very practical). Hanging it by the rubber strap would be even better
I don't have a proper thermometer, otherwise I would run some tests and post some numbers. -
I'm having some problems with TS.
Received my PA-4E 130W adapter today and started testing immediately. To see the results i want to log the results with the "Log File" option, but there is no .txt file in the TS folder.
Where is the file located?
I'm also not sure which multiplier setting i should use for the 720QM. 12 or 13 ?

From what I've read if you are using TS it should be set to a multiplier of 13x for the 720QM. Anddd I can't tell you where the file is located, because I haven't downloaded to find out myself. << >>
On a side note. . . I'm not a PR. Please don't mistaken my bratty, teasing, kid-ness for anything else. Xd And I did not bring up the debate again. Simply from the reviews I've read, especially, I simply never formed the mentality that it is what you might call a, 'gaming laptop'. *shrugs* Not that I think/didn't know it wasn't capable of playing games. Actually I have intent to do just that. So, settled. -nodsnods.-

I'm glad you have told us of another workaound, but let's not get ANYONE thinking that it is an acceptable solution. That's why I keep responding. I would like to think that people have enough sense that turning PowerPlay to Max. Battery is going to decrease performance (which thus avoids throttling), but I've seen stupider things happen.
I realize you are happy with your workaround, but there shouldn't be any kind of acceptance that this is a solution in any way. Behavior that makes Dell even THINK that we are happy is not what we need. Constant and hard pressure is what's needed.
Yeah, turning on your computer uses the CPU, too, but that's not an accurate way to tell if it is throttling.
The instant people start accepting low performance instead of the-performance-we-paid-for, Dell will start to ignore us.

You're totally right. I'm just thinking out loud, not implying anything.
I actually am. After my first test a few days ago, I am running with TS enabled (just don't tell Dell in case my adapter does explode ). I am very mindfull of the heat and have it at a location and position where it cannot do much, if any, harm.
I'm not denying that it can, has or will happen, but I'm not too scared of the adapter burning down my house. I have had two fail on me in the past (before TS existed), and they just stopped working. They shut down a few times and after a while they won't come on again. Those two also got too hot to handle, and crapped out in a few weeks. I'll see what happens with my current PA-3E when I run int at 100+W for a few weeks. Not constantly as I also have work to do, but during gaming, I'll push it over the 100W border if I can.
I'm also still contemplating opening up one of the older ones and hooking up my multimete so I can see what comes out at certain input Wattages. From previous discussions it's pretty clear the laptop doesn't get the 90W (not wall-Watts) it needs. -
I think that is the bottom line. The adapters are rated for 90W, but cannot deliver those in a reliable way without overheating the adapter under normal use (so not putting it on its side or hanging it from the strap )

It's called ThrottleStopLog.txt and should be in the same folder. No offence, but you checked the 'Log' checkbox?
On A05 I managed to pull a steady 100W without TS enabled. I only have 90W adapters, so that 100W number is on one of those. With TS enabled I pulled 110W for over 15 minutes and with my specially designed adapter positioning it was still touchable.
In my experience it throttles later and less. But it still throttles.
I think they might be testing out the limits of the 90W adapters. It is obvious that with a 130W they could let go of the throttling all together, but I think they desperately want to stick to the 90W ones. -
While I'm all for making a point, and demanding (or getting requited) I don't think there is any point in being discourteous. The reps you are talking to are most likely no one of importance in the company, and I'm sure calling them every day gets the point across. Its not like they can really do anything to help you, except forward the message. *shrugs* But I suppose you are entitled to it, so go ahead.
On another note:I'm more than happy to supply my adapter number. Unless of course this thing is resolved and/or it comes while I'm on vacation.

You wouldn't use it with a 130watt adapter?
As I understood it was a must to at least use a 130watt adapter when using throttle stop? Otherwise you risk blowing the 90watt?
