Ok since the A07 bios has been released it has been difficult to ascertain exactly what the consensus has been regarding the performance of A07 + a 130 watt adapter. So I thought I would attempt to summarise what I have picked up from this thread over the last few days and also outline a few outstanding questions I have. Please anyone in the know feel free to correct me if what I am saying is not correct.

The A07 bios combined with a 130 watt adapter seems to resolve the large majority of cpu throttling problems with the 1645. There are isolated examples where a user using A07 combined with a 130 watt adapter will still witness throttling on their laptop. However, this only occurs in rare cases when the laptop is pushed to the absolute edge of its performance limits.

    Am I correct so far?

There have also been a number of people that have reported the GPU throttling when the laptop is worked hard (usually when gaming) using the A07 bios combined with a 130 watt adapter. It is still unknown whether this is caused by the A07 bios or by the GPU overheating. It is possible to stop the GPU from throttling by using RivaTuner to lock the Mhz of the GPU at 675.

    Is this correct?

So from what I can see at this stage. If you want your CPU and GPU to run at absolute max performance you have two options.

    Either:
    A. Run A03 bios with ThrottleStop.
    B. Run A07 bios with RivaTuner.

But it both cases you are going to need to use some extra software to get the full performance out of this machine.

Am I on the mark here folks or have I missed some pertinent information in this crazy behemoth of a thread!??

Pretty good, I would run A07 regardless, it fixes a lot of bugs outside just throttling, bugs I believe where mostly due to the laptop not getting enough power... anyway...

I just beat mass effect 2, here is the TS Log I did while playing... it’s about 3-4 hours so I just took a small portion of it, this represents what is seen throughout the whole time I played the game:

As you can see, no throttling, my GPU max temp hit 86, I was running Riva Tuner so the video card always stayed at 675mhz.

I don’t mind running rivatuner, I run it on my desktop as well. I’m very happy with the performance of the laptop for now, just hope future software/games don’t cause problems.... we’ll see... I wouldn’t mind an extra 5W on the threshold, but... what you guna do?

Now all we need is a better exhaust vent. Any word on that Dell?

Siphen, What in-game graphic settings were you running that at? And I'm assuming that that was with a 130w adapter?

Yea, Bill said he was going to get on that...back when we he first appeared on scene in for the 1645 throttling issues. However, we haven't heard anything from him since then. Please Bill could we get an update, because I honestly believe that a better exhaust vent would help even more the temperatures of this machine. I know you (Bill) said you took off the exhaust on your 1340 way back when, etc. but I would like to know of any updates on a redesign of the 1645 exhaust vents.

The screen blocks the vent, I honestly don't understand how Dell missed that one (then again, that most definitely is just one of a couple "big" things they missed with this machine  ). The screen gets hotter than it should due to this blockage, and in the long-run that cannot be good for the screen (or the laptop in general). Please Bill (or Todd or Brad) an update on this issue would be well appreciated.

Well none of use should use any additional software to keep video card at certain speed.

With latest bios in place and 130W adapter people with regular WLED panels experience less throttling than people with RGB panels.
To prove my point DELL is no longer selling XPS 1645 with intel i7 and RGB panels because they know they need more power to run and even 130W power adapter is not adequate enough.

When you call DELL and ask for RGB panel and why is no longer listed their website along with xps 1645 and intel i7 they have no real answer and are making excuses.

I believe DELL should alert owners of XPS 1645 with RGB panels that throttling in adjusted in some way but the problem not resolved completely  and people with RGB panels should have a choice of swapping them for WLED free of charge.

When I run the CPU Max on Prime 95 my Kill-A-Watt shows around 94-6W pull from the wall (max brightness), this is just the CPU by itself, video card is idle.

Since the 4670 is a mid range card the i7 is going to be waiting on the video card the whole time. Hence, unless you play a more CPU demanding game, you won’t have many games pulling close to 110w which is the current limit.

the main issue is the GPU throttling due to thermal issues, this can be helped greatly with a new exhaust vent, some thermal paste if you’re brave enough or a fan blowing next to your laptop.... or.. Dell can raise the thermal limit they have imposed to 90c for the GPU :p

Because of the elegant design of this laptop, and the fact that you have an internal cd/dvd/bray drive... you only have room for the 1 fan, but have a poor design desision to have it exaust where it does.

I’m one of the 1st as well to get this system and I’m finally able to actually enjoy games on it with A07, even with A03 and TS there was issues with the sound here and there, the need to sleep before launching a game, etc... Etc...

We should have never had to go through this, we should have been able to open the laptop up, do whatever we wanted to, and enjoy it to our hearts content. I’m happy I can finally do this, but you will never again see me buying a dell for my personal self. I have always built my own systems ever since I have had a computer, and love the freedom of it, laptops are annoying to me because I would rather built it myself and design it to my specifications, not some companies.

    anyway..

Ya low brightness only in the dark. On medium brightness I get around 2:15 to 2:35. Depending that is the wifi+bt on or not.

I had a question. Before the A07 Bios. How much the battery topped at?? on A03 and A06??

For people having problems with Riva Tuner and Windows 7 64Bit, do the following:

    Install Riva Tuner:
    http://downloads.guru3d.com/RivaTuner-v2.24c-download-163.html

Download this zip file and extract it to your Riva Tuner folder:
    http://www.filefactory.com/file/b022ad9/n/Atsiv.zip

The Zip file is a program called Atsiv, it allows you to use unsigned drivers in a 64bit environment, it’s required to get Riva Tuner to work in Win Vista/7 64bit.

NOTE: You might have to tell windows defender to allow the file, or disable it all together, as Microsoft has this file marked as unsafe. It’s ok though, the file is safe. Microsoft just wants companies to pay them 400$ a year to have signed drivers for their 64bit operating systems.

I also have a bat file created that you can run that will load the RivaTuner64.sys driver and then launch the Riva Tuner exe, use this bat file to launch the program.

You also probably will have to modify your RivaTuner.cfg file and add the following to it:

    Under the [GPU_1002] section

In the RV730 Field, add 9488h in the same pattern and format that the cfg uses. Please note this is for the 4670 card in the 1645 only.

Then you should be able to do low-level hardware over clocking, and create a profile setting for 675.0Mhz, then create a schedule event for on hardware monitoring threshold event, core clock 675 as the threshold and downward as the direction, have it launch the item you saved in the over clocking tab.

That’s how I set it up anyway, seems to work ;p

Why did you get i7 Q820 instead of i7 q720 if gpu lags behind even with slower cpu  wouldn't 256gb SSD be a better choice?

I didn’t get the SSD because I’m waiting a year for better ones to come out that will also be cheaper, that’s why I only got 4GB of ram as well, I got the 820 because you cannot upgrade the processor in this system without changing the whole system board.

WLED free of charge? How about return the 300$ it cost to upgrade from WLED to RGBLED when the 1645 was first released in Canada......

If there is anything I regret about the laptop is going for the RGB instead of taking that money and using it towards RAM or SSD....oh well! Next time!

But seriously, besides the obvious drop in battery life (on A03 - I get ~3.5 hrs at medium brightness), it was pretty obvious this beast would have a bad battery life - based on the specs. I am just glad things run normally now 99.9% of the time for me.

Now if they can just redesign this vent/make the battery flush with the stupid computer, we'd be in business!

What about the XPS owners in The Netherlands ?

I've been emailing with Dell (chat is NEVER available, and which tel.number I must choose isn't easy to find out for the XPS systems) and all they do is telling me they don't know about the throttling problems and they even don't know about (free) 130W power adapters.

Bill said that all regions were contacted so how can it be that we all, sperately, have to reinvent the wheel again ?

Shouldn't there be ONE number we could call for the problem (with people who know about the issue) or an emailaddress we could address so they could take immidiate actions and send us the power adapters ?

It puzzles me why it's so hard to get them to understand.

Anyone from Holland who can help me / us with this ?

Is there someone who can report watt usages with a 150W? Since Ihave RGB and i7-820 I'd rather prefer the 150W over the 130W.

Thats good news siphen. The riva tuner fix is a good one, sucks you have to run it anyway. I feel the beggining of this thread is finally/mostly useless now, since throttling is 99% fixed. Still not convinced some games wont peak above the 110w limit though. It would be much better with 5-10 extra watts avail, just no wiggle room.

From the responses of the latitudes ive heard from bill and other sources. I dont think theyre going to try and improve temps that much, if it is indeed gpu throttling because of it. Bill said theyd look into a vent if they felt it necessary to replace. So i remain doubtful that will happen, as i dont think it is in someone likes bills hands.

Just an update on the International/SouthEastAsia front, I'm in Singapore and just called my toll-free support number, and got routed to Malaysia. The nice support person isn't aware of the throttle issue/new issue of power supply after checking for a few minutes...

Neither was the throttling issue really, but Bill (thank you again) pushed/haggled the engineers a bit. I hope they really consider it because I feel like that would help temperatures quite a bit. Not to be overly expressive, but DELL the screen blocks the frickin. exhaust vent   Maybe this topic needs a new thread....

Not Really, I was running UT3+ 2 threads in prime, even with just one thread in prime it throttled down to about 9X multi.

That's fine for UT3 Sure. But what about future games that might use more. Or what if you want multitasking while playing a game. Ask yourself why you bought a quad core in the first place? For the WLED users this may be fine. It may not throttled.

I think you need to check out GPU temps over the course of an hour of playing a game, without level loads to see if the GPU will really be able to handle extended gaming periods without throttled. My experience is it cannot.

It's also important to remember Turboboost isn't just based on the number of threads, backend or frontend processes that use ALU's or FPU's can cause the chip to back off as well. Heat will play a big issue as well.

    I wonder, would a CoreI5 ( 2 cores + 2thread a core) @ 2.4 ghz be faster then a Core I7 (4cores+2threads a core)@1.6ghz in a 4 threaded app.. Hyper threading and turboboost makes things tricky.

Doorbell rings, 9am, man with package. It's suspiciously light :(

Open it, find a mains cable. No adaptor. And the mains cable ends in a straight 3-pin female, so it's not the wrapover type for a PA-4E :(

It does look as if it would fit, though.

I presume this is from Dell; it does not say Dell anywhere on the packaging or any paperwork, though, just Getronics Ltd.

On the plus side, it does appear to be brand new, and not refurbished :D

Same here. Orderred the replacement adapter Monday. Power lead arrived yesterday. Rang Dell to query this, and was told the adapter was out of stock and on a 5-7 business day back order. Low and behold, courier arrived this morning with the adapter....... :) Despite the confusion and misleading feedback from Dell they still managed a 48 hour delivery turn around. I just wish the information flow was more accurate. It also makes me wonder, why they could not co-ordinated this better and shipped both the power lead and AC adapter together saving at least one set of delivery charges.

They sent me a brand new PA-4E Family 130W Slim Line adapter Dell P/N JU012 with 3pin Straight UK spec power lead.

It is a PA-4E Adapter that means its slim one but trust me it is bulky if you compare with the 90W Adapter I had. I dont know how am i gonna travel with this huge adapter :(.
The condition was as good as new so I checked it and accepted it. They say they check and repack the refurbished adapter so it would be as good as new.
My only concern is its weight otherwise system performs gr8 now.

Same issue as Midnight_Voice and gszech, Dell have only sent me the power cord (straight through design)!

A brief call to Dell support confirmed my suspicions that the 130W AC adaptors are out of stock and that I should expect delivery early next week. I was a little surprised that Dell could not provide me with a order tracking number for the AC adaptor.

Maybe I'll get lucky like Hillie and have the AC adaptor delivered tomorrow.

Made another call to Dell and I've almost killed Dell engineer over the phone when he was trying to convince me that my laptop will not support 130W power supply.

They guy had no brain so I've asked for a manager.

And surprise surprise... Manager had no problem with sending me 130W power supply with next day delivery option.
The reason why I've not received power supply (got cord only) was that they were out of stock.

So I've asked the manager if they are out of stock, how did you managed to send me one right now ?

No answer to that ... it's just like talking to 5 year old kid...

I should receive new power supply tomorrow
Will run all possible test on it and let you know guys if the laptop got a throttling problems.

I would also receive new laptop replacement on March and then will let you know if the New laptops are shipped with 130W or still with 90W brick.

    Bipul,

    PA-3E 90W = 145mm x 70mm x 18mm and the weight is 260g
    PA-4E 130W = 155mm x 75mm x 25mm and the weight is 464g

(I just took these measurements and weights myself)

The physical size is not that much larger, but the weight is up 200g and that is the penalty for the extra 40watts of power. However if you are lugging around an XPS-1645 at 2.9Kg, an extra 200gms weight is really insignificant when compared to Laptop itself.

IMO, the orientation and shape of the 9cell battery detracts from the portability of the XPS 1645 in a backpack or laptop bag more than the weight of the PA-4E adapter. But then again the shape and position of the 9Cell battery allows the base of the laptop to be elevated and that helps with cooling. Some will even state this elavation helps with the position of the keyboard and user comfort. Eitherway it is about compromises and personal preferences. Some good and some are bad. Having travelled globally and extensively myself by plane, train and car, there are better options if portability is your key selection criteria. For sure when travelling, I will trade less horse power for a smaller footprint and much less weight. I use the XPS1645 at home as a desk top replacement and moving from room to room. I would rate this as barely tolerable as a laptop for travel by car and certainly not by Air. (Just my own view point and opinion)

Like I said before, dell is a classic example of a business that has become too big for itself.
The communication (if there is any) between seperate divisions, regions and countries is horrible. They do no communicate and act like they are seperate companies rather than one: dell.

I sent my detail to Bill anyway (i'm also from the netherlands) but haven't heard anything yet

The charger is double the size!!!!

And that is one hell of a penalty for asking an extra 40W of power..

I am actually planning to saw off the vent part and also the portion of the screen blockin it.... Then i guess my laptop will be brand new... oops... i meant good to go.... :D

Update : I just called Dell (The Netherlands) and spoke to a guy named Brandon. He knew about the throttling issue and logged a call for me. I should have the adapter by tomorrow.

He told me that just this afternoon his department got an official statment that they could (and should) send the 130W adapters to customers.

He mailed this to his colleagues on his department with partnumbers included, so they should all know about this.

So boys and girls from The Netherlands : call Dell !!

Which adapter did you get? The PA-4E is not double size of the original adapter but it is bigger. I'm OK with the size.

It's not far off as it's much thicker and also has a bigger footprint.

XPS 1645 with WLED panel throttling somewhat fixed with 130W adapter and bios A07 update but battery life substantially decreased.

XPS 1645 with RGB panel throttling not fixed, 130W adapter and bios A07 update has no real effect of throttling, battery life substantially decreased.

It looks like DELL has not sold many XPS 1645 with RGB panels so they're not really care nor providing real fix to their users.

Have anyone tried 150W power adapter with XPS 1645 and RGB panel....?

...and at last vent must be redesign on this laptop ---I hope DELL is reading this!!!

Your statement is incorrect, I have the XPS 1645 with the RGB panel and it does not throttle. I have ran the tests with Crysis and it ran perfect for me so I do not know where you are getting your information from.

    Hi guys,

    Is there anybody from Spain?
I just called Dell today and although the rep knew about the issue and the solution provided in US, he said that an order regarding sending of 130W PSUs has not yet arrived to his department.

I'm wondering... someone has tried to call Dell Spain?

Solution seems being spreading over Europe, but as always we are the lasts.

How are you guys able to run games like MW2 and Crysis on High settings smoothly. Maybe I don't have the latest chipset drivers from intel or something is amiss on my system because I get choppy play after like 15 mins even when I turn down the settings to medium. This happens regardless if I have TS on or off and the overclock locked to 675/800 on rivatuner. This is kind of driving me nuts at this point.

I totally agree with you. Even when I had the 90W Adapter it was not less then a headache to move around with the laptop. Wish I had money then I would have got an m11x or as simple as Studio 14. I still have an Inspiron 14 but I dont use it anymore. I was thinking that I would also keep the 90W adapter as all other customers were granted so that I keep 130W Adapter at home and more around with the 90W Adapter. I always knew that 130W Adapter would be a bigger headache. But atleast it is performing to its advertised specs.
All I have to do is Get my chest and back build up to handle that weight :D :D :D

What are your temps? The processor could be hitting a dell imposed thermal throttle.

Crysis is not a test that you should be running :(, who would think that running game as test would give true indication whats happening....

Have you run any other test with and without power adapter?

    just ran Crysis Demo.

1980*1080 resolution and all other settings are at high (NOT VERY HIGH), and the game lags like crazy...you can freaking count how many bullets you shot...very disappointed. from Throttlestop i could see that the multiples are around 16.

Crysis Demo is slow, period - i can play it on everything high except for shadows and its still sluggish, if you have the patched full version i think its a little faster. Crysis Warhead is faster than Crysis Demo.

Not true based on my experience. I have the XPS 1645 with RGB and I am not noticing any throttling during gaming. I think you are exaggerating there.

It seems not enough power is going to cpu and gpu to handle Crysis as it is especially with RGB panel.... :( same here!

We need 150W adapter from DELL and new bios update specifically made for XPS 1645 with RGB panel.

I have done my testing with the 130W adapter and the A07 Bios and also have the RGBLED, it does not Throttle anymore and works just fine. So your statement is incorrect.

You do you just can't hardly notice with your super fast SSD. Test it again with regular hd and you see throttling still occurs.
