I'm not sure if anyone has this issue, but I just discovered this.

I'm using BIOS A8, and the throttling is gone. However, after a few times of going to sleep and reverting to normal, the multiplyer doesn't go up anymore. Usually I'll just change from 'balanced' power option to 'high performance' and see the multiplyer go up almost immediately. Does anyone have any clues? It seems that Turbo Boost doesn't work after going into sleep a few times.

I'm not entirely sure. If you have it normally set on 'balanced' it is going to effect the full capabilities of your machine, and setting it to "high performance" will definitely change that. Would you say when operating this machine, although you don't get readings the multiplier is going up, a notable degradation in performance? The program you are using could simply glitch and not refresh itself. Past that there are a number of software problems that could cause poor performance. (I've had my machine crash several times when playing Full HD videos on YouTube, and once the entire machine slowed down in the middle of watching a video.) So, unless you have a clear idea of what could be causing the problem, the best and only thing to do is a fresh reinstall of everything. But that may simply be more trouble then it is worth.

That's my take on it anyway.

    Jeff,

I'm sure that UncleWebb could chime in here and give us an explanation, but it sounds like your processors are getting stuck in a lowered C-State, and by changing the power profile, you are giving them a little kick in the pants to wake them up.

I highly doubt that it is software, and for hanging Flash videos, I beat them into submission by using the latest Flash Beta.

I don't suppose if he raises his minimum processor state it might get rid of the problem?

Dell sent me a 6cell battery in addition to my 9cell battery on normal usage I get roughly 2 hours out of it, Gaming generally gives much less and depending on the game it can go much quicker.

That being said I don't think I've really felt the desire to put the 9cell battery back in yet. Maybe on a trip i will use it as a backup battery but otherwise It sits in its corner.

(also when at home half the time I keep my laptop on my mascool stand so airflow isn't really an issue).

Yes, that's the problem. My understanding is that choosing 'full performance' makes the minumum speed higher. So if I reboot, everything works as expected, but later, this doesn't work any more. I'll continue to see what sort of variables may be causing this...

Interesting lead... I haven't had video slowdowns yet.. I'm just curious if a single app can 'slow down the whole system'. While I can see how an app will 'hijack processing power', the changing of the multipler (TurboBoost?) isn't related to this sort of thing as it's a low level OS thing? Maybe this is an incorrect view, will see how it goes.. :)

Another similar example: http://communities.intel.com/message/86645;jsessionid=8BA201CEAC4FF4DC79D2CC07F6603BD0.node5COMS (but I thought the i7-720 doesn't need to load a TurboBoost driver? Strange...)

It seemed to be related to the plug-in in Google Chrome, which I guess would have to be a compatibility issue which leads to the whole system becoming unstable because Windows can't properly isolate it. XD

I've lurking here for quite awhile and it seems that throttle-gate has finally came to an end, any ideas how I could get the 130W? I've read about 300 pages and still haven't found any info. All I got was that Bill is going send them out. Anyone mind helping me? Thanks :)

Dogta, I called Malaysia too and they always entertain the calls (very good service!). Just try to be nice and ask to speak to the supervisor if the guy handling the call doesn't know what's going on. The information is out there and people higher up the chain know about the issue. I got my replacement in 2 days via DHL. The part number is CM161.

has anyone been successful in getting a free 130w adapter from dell canada? they just turned down my request for one because my order was older than 30 days. i ordered mid january and received it in february.

if you have got one from them as a free replacement, could you share you contact and let me know how you got it?

    thanks!

    Hi guys, new here!
I'm plaining on buying a Studio XPS 16 on Canada in the next 2 weeks.
My question is: is Dell shipping new notebooks with the new (required to solve the problem) power adapter?

Other question: I've been trying to check the availability of the customized machine, but the canadian site doesn't show the shipping date when I try to customize the notebook. Do you guys know when they'll ship if I buy, say, tomorrow?

    Thanks for the help!

Ps. Excuse my english. It's not my native language.

technically they claim it is already shipping with the adapter - but place a phone order and ensure this is the case!

as for when it will ship - this is a crap shoot - usually they give an estimated delivery date of 1 month - but mine took >2 months (was given some compensation but nothing special) whereas others have received it in 2 weeks. However, don't assume less than 1 month - and that way you won't be disappointed when it takes ~ 1 month.

Thank you very much for your reply, zimmyntrn.
I have another question, this time regarding an optional. Maybe you can help me. The sales person I talked on the chat didn't seam to know what I was talking about.
What is the Soundblaster X-Fi Hi Def Audio - Software Enabled?
How does it differ from the High Definition Audio 2.0 with SRS Premium Sound?
Is it worth the extra $30 (Canadian store)?
    Thank you in advance.

Don't bother with the Creative software. All it does is create issues and incompatibilities for a very minor, if that, increase in sound quality. Definitely a ripoff and not worth it at all.

Apologies if this has been mentioned but I don't feel like reading through 400+ pages....

I recently purchased a Studio XPS 16; it arrived Friday, March 26th. The system properties say it is a 1647, though the notations on the order details conflict (the screen entry finishes with "XPS 1645" while the backup disk entry says "XPS 1645"). It has an i5-M540 and RGBLED screen. The adapter is labelled as a 90w.

Does the i5 suffer from the throttling issue normally, or does it in conjuction with this screen? What is the best way to quickly test for this issue?

    1645 has i7 quad cores, 1647 has i3,i5 and dual core i7

I just pulled the trigger on the systems in my signature... wondering if the 130w adapter will come with it. I also ordered two additional adapters for the XPS (90w)... guess I'll have to get those replaced as the sales rep wasn't able to figure out what I was talking about...

JKleis: How did you get 2 HDD + Optical drive in your XPS 1645?

I received a slim 130w adapter today after returning my big 130w adapter which I had originally exchanged for 90w adapter. However, when I connected it to my system, there was a message which said that the new adapter cannot be recognised, connect a valid dell adapter which as power rating of 90w or more for the system to perform optimally. I saw this message only once but the battery is charging and stuff.

What I wish to know is how to ascertain what the laptop has detected this new PA-4E adapter as, its power rating and characteristics. I tried device manager, it showed as Microsoft AC Adapter. Hadn't noticed what the previous one was showing. Is there any dell driver for the adapter even?

Thanks JKleiss, it says 130w adapter. So, should work fine.

However, comparing the 2 130w adapters, the bulky one was much cooler. Slim one gets as hot as the previous 90w adapter. So, if mobility is not a concern, its better to stay with bulky one imo.

For me actually it never gets hot... It is barely warm..... It is much much better than the 90W adapter.... If the 90W adapter was "HOT" then this is like sub zero....

Must be a problem with your adapter i think.... Ask tech support to send you another.... Not that big a pain...And see if that also gets as hot as the one you are having now.....

yesterday i receive my studio xps 1645 with i7 720 QM.
in gpu-z my core clock speed is at 220 mhz and memory
clock speed is at 300 mhz and temp. is 53 c.
is that normal as i am not doing any graphical intensive task.

i currently have 90 watt adapter.
also in cpu-z my multiplier is at 7.but if i increase the minimum processor state percentge in advanced power options from 5 to 100 my multiplier jumps to 20.what is this all about.
i have contacted technical support and they are sending me the 130 watt adapter but it will be the brick one as slim one's are out of stock in india.
do i need to set the % to 100 even with 130 watt adapter.

also please tell me the some what working fix for rattling.

by default no matter what the chip runs between 50-53 degrees. Thats how the chip operates no way to make it cooler unless you have a massive heatsink which does not fit.

There's nothing wrong with what you're seeing. It's working as intended. Just put the power plan to 'balanced'. It will go faster when your applications require it.

Hello, first post here so please excuse me if I'm posting in the wrong thread. I recently got a refurbished SXPS 1645 from Dell outlet and upon receiving it I started testing its capabilities. I have seen multiple issues related to throttling, complete lockups due to overheating, and in general reduced performance from an otherwise a wonderful laptop. I am using Everest to monitor and log CPU activities and it is clear that the laptop is throttling not just under severe CPU load (forget Prime 95 x8 instances) but even during moderate (single threaded activities) such as SuperPi calculations and WEI benchmarking. I have seen the CPU hit as high as 95C before throttling down to 931Mhz. The CPU is supposed to overclock itself up to 2.8GHz during single threaded loads but the highest speed I have seen is 2.66Ghz. I have updated the bios to the latest A08 version as well as the latest ATI 10.3 drivers. Dell is going to replace the motherboard, heatsinks and give me a 130W adapter tomorrow but I am concerned that this may be a design issue with inadequate heat dissipation. Should I request another 1645 replacement if the fixes don't work or perhaps ask for a 1647 due to lower cpu heat? I love the design of the laptop and don't want to return it completely. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

    Bummer Sam,

    Welcome to the 1645.

My advice would be to request a 1647 as the CPU throttling is not an issue, but the chassis design is still the same; so you may encounter GPU throttling as it reaches it's thermal limits.

    Good Luck.

I recently received new xps 1647, to my dismay it came with i7 620m rather than with i7 720m and new 130 power adapter. I am surprised because I originally ordered i7 720m not i7 620m. I thought by now every new 16 XPS would be shipped with 130w power adapter not 90 power adapter.

I only wonder how there two compare performance wise 2 cores vs 4 cores.

I guess my battery will last longer with i7 620m but then I paid for something else why would DELL decided to switch cpus.. :(

.... I don't even see an option on DELL US website which would enable me to select i7 620m so why would DELL went ahead put in one in first place

    RGB screen is great!

"i7 720QM is a quad, but the clock speed with Turbo Mode goes like following.

    1.60GHz Base
    1.73GHz Quad Core Turbo
    2.40GHz Dual Core Turbo
    2.80GHz Single Core Turbo

    i7 620M is like this:

    2.66GHz Base
    3.06GHz Dual Core Turbo
    3.33GHz Single Core Turbo

See the clock speed differences? Even in heavily multi-threaded apps it'll be a wash because of the massive clock speed gap.

I'd go for the 620M, it'll be faster in most cases and competitive in the worst, and with better battery life and lower heat. "

If what he saying is true I7 620m is pretty close performance wise to i7 720m producing less heat and with pretty non-existent throttling issue.

did you give back your 1645 for a 1647 famx? I also, don't understand your previous post whining about your 1645 having a i7-620, as only the 1645 has the i720/820/920 where the 1647 has the i5s/i7-620.

Also - for the current stuff, the dual core will be better if you were looking for more of a laptop but I am not sure why anyone would buy this if they were looking for a mobile long lasting battery laptop. But yes - do to lower power consumption the i7-620 will have longer battery life and run cooler to some degree. However potentially in the future the i7-720 will be more powerful, if programs actually begin to use the extra cores.

Just to update on my case: Dell tech came in and replaced the motherboard, heatsinks and changed the power supply adapter with 130W one. In the process he scratched the top of the laptop. When we started the computer back, the processor was detected as a dual core instead of quad core and during a simple cpu test the temperature of the cpu went up to 99C. At that time he decided that I need a replacement so he called dispatch and hopefully in 10-15 days I will get a better laptop. I am debating whether to accept that or to cancel the order while I still have time and start over.

So I just got off the phone with a Dell Canada/US Technician because of certain issues with my Studio XPS 1645. The technician deduced that the motherboard was the problem and then proceeded to tell me that there is a NEW motherboard being shipped out from DELL in order to solve the throttling issues that were all still somewhat seeing. Has anyone else heard of this before because this is the first I'm hearing of this.
