Most frustrating news i've heard in months! Turns out from the Dell Canada website that the new and (supposedly) improved studio xps 1647 will only sport the ATI's mobility 5730 which incidentally does not support gddr5- EVEN AS AN OEM OPTION!!! Many expected to see the mobility 5770 in the updated SXPS'S or at the very least, a 5750 WITH 1GB OF GDDR5. The 5730 is simply unacceptable!!! Dell charges TOP DOLLAR for these little puppies and now they are cutting corners on the GPU'S!!! Dell should be ashamed!!This laptop does not even deserve the XPS moniker. The graphics are too weak. It should be a Studio Pro 1647.
AS WE ALL KNOW ALL OF ATI'S NEW MOBILE CARDS USE A RATHER LAME 128 BIT MEMORY INTERFACE AND AS SUCH, RESONABLE PERFORMANCE CAN ANLY BE ACHIEVED WITH THE USE OF GDDR5 ram which runs at about twice the speed of GDDR3.
Ive been waiting for this upgrade ever since ATI anounced their first DX11 parts back in September. Dell engineers have turned my dream into a nightmare. Im looking elsewhere!

USING ALL CAPS MAKES MY MESSAGE COME ACROSS BETTER
While I understand your frustration, was it necessary for you to make multiple threads featuring your stream of consciousness as you look over the specs for the 1647? -
1647 is a budget version of the 1645. Perhaps the 1645 will sport something better.
-
Frankly, I dont see the logic in using the 5730 (memory bandwith=25.6 GB/s) if when just by using gddr5, they could have doubled that figure to a 51.2 GB memory bandwith which is all the 5770 is. Everything else is identical. Even the difference in TDP is only 1w between the 5730 and the 5750 and 6w between the 5730 and 5770! Both are comfortably within the range of the sxps system cooling capability. The mobility 4670 uses 35w TDP after all, doesnt it??
This is just penny pinching in the extreme. Lets hope that they include options for some of the more powerful ATI DX11 parts- though there are few precedents for such on this range. -
Then don't buy one? Why did everyone else need to be enlightened to your frustration?
-
Maybe there is not enough of 5770 or 5750 cores available in the market?, maybe dell chuck ati mobility 5730 for the mean time to keep some customer happy XD rather then stuck on 4670 for months
-
Well because a lot of people will be feeling pretty let down too. The tradition of the sxps thus far has been to use the most powerful upper mid-range gpu's from ATI. It was reasonable to expect that that tradition would be upheld. This is a big let down.
-
Yeah that may be the case, but there's nothing anyone can do about it. So what's the point?
-
-
Yep 5730 is definitely a snack for people who can't wait XD , the meal will come later
-
so are there any benchmark results for 5730?
-
If they are about the same, i'd go with the 5730, as it takes much less power...
-
-
According to Notebookcheck.net 5730 has 400SP while HD4670 only has 320SP...
The HD5730 would perform a little better i suppose with is 400SP, DX11 and 40nm process... just hope it'll be GDDR3 -
Hmm, this is the last place I'd expect someone to get lectured on nit-picking a laptop spec.

Howitzer225 Death Company Dreadnought
The problem with putting GDDR5 is the potential problem with heat output and memory clocks, AFAIK. Remember the 4870 in Alienware machines? Those were supposedly to come with GDDR5 memory but when people received them it turned out to be GDDR3.
Some people just aren't content of hardware upgrades. -
I don't understand why there's an ATI card in the XPS 16 ... Don't get me wrong, not knocking ATI and I actually prefer it over Nvidia
But why didn't dell stick a high end Nvidia card or two mid-range cards and enabled SLI for them ... is it because ATI runs cooler than Nvidia -
I've had two nVidia cards in my desktop and plenty of my friends have nVidia in their laptops. I'm the only one (out of the laptops) who doesn't have overheating issues. Mind you, they are HPs.

tl;dr: You're mad the 1647 isn't top-specced in the line.
the 1647 has a lower-performance CPU then the 1645 so why would it have a much faster GPU? -
It's not much faster...I'd say it's in the same ballpark. According to this:
http://www.notebookcheck.net/ATI-Mobility-Radeon-HD-5650.23697.0.html
The slower HD 5650 shows numbers that are similar to the HD 4670 (the videocard in the 1645). So, at the very least, I think it's safe to assume that the 5730 is marginally faster than the 4670.
My question, looking at the chips specs of the three chips, is why didn't Dell choose the 5650 (as it shows that the core and shader speeds can be clocked to the exact same as the 5730) instead of the 5730? What does the 5730 offer that the 5650 doesn't? The only difference I can see is the power consumption.
**Edit: comparing the benchmarks between the 4670 and the 5650, I feel that I may be incorrect in saying that 5650 is marginally better. In most of the game benchmarks, the numbers show the 5650 destroying the 4670, getting much better framerates while using higher quality settings. Remeber, this is the 5650, not the 5730, which is supposed to be even better(?)
Larry. -
Glad the 5K series is beastly. Needless to say, I've been an ATI fan after this laptop.
Yeah, 5730 should be faster, no doubt then. Was this whole thread a fail, then? Not sure.
I mean, naming schemes go to hell between generations, but I've never heard of a higher-numbered card within a generation being slower than a lower-numbered card in that same generation.
~Ibrahim~ -
I think the benefits of the new card come in the form of power consumption/heat. Seems like everyone's agenda lately (ie. Intel w/i5 & i3)
-
Agreed...Like I said before, even if there were absolutely no performance benefits in terms of framerate, I'd still go with the newer card as a) it's a free upgrade, and b) it uses less power. Win-win situation. However, the bad news...
I was informed today by my Dell Rep that there is a lead time on the 5730, so I may not be getting my laptop any time in the near future....

-
Well it doesnt look like the the 5730 is available anymore. As a matter of the 1647 disappeared completely from the site.
-
I think a few people noticed that on the US site as of yesterday. The i5 is still available for purchase on the Canadian site, but you can't get the dual core i7 processor or the 5730 from the product page. However, you can still get to the page where you can choose it by going here:
http://configure.dell.com/dellstore...&l=en&s=dhs&cs=cadhs1&kc=laptop-studio-xps-16
L. -
I wonder what are they up to.
-
It's also wayyy more expensive through that link. (Which might be because there was a several hundred dollar discount before and now it's only $50 off) -
Well, Dell had a pretty good deal on the 1647 with the dual core i7 and the free upgrade to the 5730 on the Canadian site yesterday. I purchased one of those myself. It could be that there was an overwhelming number requests for those parts (more orders for machines with those parts came in than orders dell has ordered of those parts). An understandable knee jerk reaction would be to stop selling those configurations before you get too behind in backorder. Since the 5730 part was just announced less than a week ago, I'd say availability isn't quite up there yet either.
L. -
Dell sure loves early adopters (*guilty!*).
~Ibrahim~ -
Not sure where this information came from but I have a 1647 on order and this is the GPU I have in the order: ATI Mobility RADEON HD 4670 1GB.
-
*ONLY* as in only 5xxx series GPU. My 1647 will be delivered on thursday. (w/4670) -
As far as Dell using ATI, I'm all for it. As I sit here, my gpu (8600m gt) is now down to a "cool" 63 Celsius. This is with my cpu undervolted and a cooling pad. All I'm doing is posting and listening to some music.
EDIT: Isn't GDDR5 only in the 58XX series? I don't think that there will be a GDDR5 card cool enough to put in a multimedia laptop anytime soon. -
dont understand why in Gods name you complain about Ati 5730 ?????
it faster then 4670
it runs cooler
it use less power...........(26W against 35W)
it feature DX11.1.............(4670 feature only dx10, which suxs)
it feature shader 5..........(4670 feature only shader 4)
its a much better card in every aspects......
--------------------------------------------------------
edit.......you really think a super-slim laptop as SXPS handle a stronger video card then 5730 ???? the only way is to put a separate Fan over the GPU (or rebuild the chassi so it gets bigger and cooler)...then maybe !
buy a real gaming PC if you want to play Crysis in 1080p + 8XAA -
-
~Ibrahim~ -
lol exactly, there needs to be distinctions between each class/line.
-
Whats wrong with AW ?
-
Nothing is, AW is just more expensive lol so no one would buy an AW if the SXPS line had all the top of the line parts.
-
I know they have throttling issue locked at 7X when on battery and fully unlocked when on the 120W adapter. -
USB 3.0 is something I'm very interested in, switchable graphics not so much. I don't think you're trading anything off by switching but the Envy has it's problems as well.
-
After writing an email to the president of Dell France Montpellier, Dell called me.
He called me he knows the problem of throttling and he propose to me a refound of my SXPS 1645 or change my 1645 by 1647 i7 620M (only 4670 available... For him, the 5730 on the Dell CA was a bug and it unaivailable for the moment). But he dosen't recommand to me to change by the 1647 with 4670 because he tested it and he saw the same problem of throttling.....
So he recommand to me for change for free my 1645 :
Alienware M15x - i7 620M (with refound) - GTX 260M - SSD 256 Go - Intel 5300 - Battery 9 cell - Full HD 15,6".
But I dosen't like the design of the Alienware. So I'm not yet decided...
But according to him, the 1647 with 4670 = THROTTLING ISSUE -
That's a pretty sweet deal but the AW design
and the 620M
but other than that it's awesome.
-
-
mostly the multiplier on battery issue and heating.
-
-
-
Like I said before 1645 users aren't experiencing heating issues...the 1645 is quite efficient when it comes to heat actually.
-
The vent on the back makes the left side of the screen really warm too. I wonder if that might affect the screen over long time.
STUDIO XPS 1647- ONLY HAS MOBILITY 5730-no GDDR5!!!
