I just bought a studio xps 1647 from best buy and today the usb ports stopped working. They could not see multiple jump drives I inserted. Is this a win 7 flaw or is something wrong with my laptop? It was in sleep earlier. My theory is that the laptop just didn't wake the ports coming out of sleep mode. I'm contemplating returning the laptop for another. Also one of the keys was being held on by a piece of 2 sided tape lol. This was a brand new laptop.

Dependent upon return. IF someone returns it and says they never even opened the box, back on to the sales floor it goes.

I have an XPS 1645 and the USB ports stopped working once (out of about 25 times) after coming out of hibernation. After restarting they were fine though. Are they working now, and does it happen often when you sleep it?
Edit: if you suspect the "new" laptop was used you should return it and demand full cashback or an exchange. -
The key I didnt really care about. I ordered one online for like 6 bucks. I have already installed all my software the way I want it, slimed on some arctic silver, and other than the key the laptop is sound. My only worry now is the usb ports not working, maybe its a fluke?

this happens to me occasionally after I have put the computer into sleep mode and wake it a few times. The ports stop responding. Usually after like 3 or 4 sleep/awake cycles it seems. A reboot fixes it. Note: mine was ordered through dell.com and is new. Its not really a big deal to me but I thought I would mention it happens to me too sometimes.

Yea, I guess its not really a big deal. Asimple reboot will fix it. Thanks for the info everyone and I just returned it to best buy for another... guess what? the fn key is being help on with a piece of tape, bonus!!!

Did you guys installed Dell System Software utility?
http://support.dell.com/support/dow...peid=-1&formatid=-1&impid=-1&checkFormat=true
It includes some USB related fixes such as:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=978258
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=974476
I have installed this utility and it installed a bunch of updates (including the above) but I never had any problems (SXPS1640). If I were you, I will definitely install it. -
1. DSS just installs Microsoft/Windows Updates that Dell considers "critical." If you install all updates through Windows Update, you don't need DSS (on Windows 7).
2. You can't and/or should not install DSS unless you install it first (i.e. before all other drivers). -
Again, it doesn't hurt to install it, especially since the hotfixes address issues with USB and other standby/hibernation problems. OK, the issues fixed are not exactly what people in this thread are experiencing, but since it fixes similar issues, it might help.
Last but not least, Dell says the following: "Level of Importance: Urgent", "Dell highly recommends applying this update as soon as possible. The update contains changes to improve the reliability and availability of your Dell system." -
It couldn't hurt to try it. I never install dss, but maybe i should. I exchanged the original laptop for another 1647 now this one is having severe vibrations from the hard drive.... it never ends does it?
