My SXPS m1640 gets extremely hot underneath the touchpad even when I'm performing basic tasks such as browsing the web. Is that where the graphics card is located? Is it normal for the m1640's to get very hot in this area?

No, if you search the forum, it's the southbridge there and it's hot because circulation is near 0 there. Don't worry it's fine otherwise Dell's SXPS brand would've never gotten off the ground. Prop your laptop up with a book if you're worried.

call DELL, and they will replace this hardware......it seems somebody have a bit weak southbridge or heatpipe. (read they replace the whole mobo and everything, so thats good)

I have the same issue on all three 1640s (four actually if you count the one I got replaced because of a dent). They don't get "extremely hot" while surfing the web though just warm, but what is hot and what is warm is personal of course.

I ran mine for 8 hours in 80 degree temperaure last weekend, playing some games and surfing etc. It never got what I would describe as too hot to touch whatsoever. I would call it very warm.

You do have a man card, right? ;)

Viper, is that on a notebook cooler? My sxps gets so hot its uncomfortable to game in extended periods (ie an hour or over). For me the left side of the keyboard, left palmrest and touchpad are scorchio :(

Undervolt your CPU and the heat will be greatly reduced. You may also want to think about using a cooler, Zalman NC2000 and Antec Cooler To Go are good choices. There is a well written guide to undervolting here.

See my post about undervolting and yes a cooler is a great idea if you plan to have an extended gaming session. My T9550 is undervolted to 1.0v and I use a Zalman NC2000. I can game for hours. I give out before my 1640 does.

undervolting the CPU does not clear out all heat issues.......
most of the heat comes during games and there is the CPU working pretty hard + most of the heat comes from the GPU (who not have any separate fan as most people know)

if you have very hot SXPS i would call DELL and let them replace the hardware, (the technician who comes usually put new, fresh thermal paste on the components).

(buying a expensive notebook cooler will also work, BUT WHY should you pay £40-50 extra just get decent temps ???? (call DELL and let them fix it instead)

I do have the 9 cell battery which definitely helps air flow.
If what you are describing as "hot" means you literally can not hold your hand on it for more than a few seconds, mine never gets that hot, ever. Very warm, yes. I have not used a cooler, but I would if I gamed more.

Dayton, I have already applied AS5 and undervolted. But in extended gaming sessions it still becomes uncomfortable.

I have also applied AS5 to the GPU so I guess I am out of luck and the cooler is my only choice. I really like the laptop and dont want to sell it.

KSMB - you are spot on, I begrudge spending the money on a notebook cooler, I may phone dell but I cant see them doing anything more than I have already done.

They (customer service) can't really do much about it, the placement of the southbridge is just pure epic fail. I mean marked with yellow is the southbridge right, that is just hilarious ? :D

RadioKWO has ordered some copper to use on the southbridge perhaps this will help some... go here to read his post

Thin laptops are what they are, that is poorly cooled and ventilated. Coolers have become almost standard issue when it comes to gaming with one. My SXPS 1640 + 1.0v T9550 + Zalman NC2000 + Razer Orochi = no complaints from me when gaming, that's all I'm saying.
