Just installed Windows 7 and noticed that under Win7 there are even fewer resolutions available than under Vista. I assume it is because of the reliance on Generic PnP Monitor driver. Anyone try another monitor driver for the RGB LED 1920x1080 SXPS 16?

Monitors don't need special drivers, they will report what resolutions they support to the system.

It is very common for a generic driver to be too restrictive. Why desktop monitors will include drivers (or an inf) so that you can benefit from the actual resolutions and refresh rates available for the device. Noticed the availability of 1680x1050 getting dumped when going from Vista to 7. Nice to have as an option for a demanding game.

As far as the monitor is concerned it only supports exactly one resolution, 1920x1080 since its an LCD. There may be a way to make the ATI display driver list more resolutions in games, search for "add ati custom resolution" or something.

However keep in mind 1680x1050 (16:10) is a different aspect ratio than the monitor's resolution which is 16:9, so the picture would appear stretched, not proportional, or would have black borders on the sides. It's likely the reason why it's not listed in the game.

While not ideal, 1680x1050 is a far better choice than the available resolution of 1400x1050. 1680x1050 doesn't look odd if you pair it with the right scale in the games display settings.

it always looks odd, since it is a diff AR than the display. it may be good enough for you, but id rather use 1600x900, since its actually the same shape.

you can scale all you want, but nothing beats 1:1 pixel mapping, or if you can't have that, at least the right shape.

EDIT: if you need 1680x1050, try the ati settings, like the abve poster suggested, if that doesn't work, try Powerstrip.

i have wondered about this myself, for no other reason than it annoys me to see "generic monitor" id rather see the lcd model number, lol

Out of curiousity, what game is it? In the games I've tried so far I've seen several resolutions listed including 1680x1050, 1400x1050, and so on.

Forgot about PowerStrip, haven't used it since back in the day. Don't remember how to use the app but at least now I know that the display/monitor is a Seiko-Epson SEC5448 and that the Generic PnP driver supplied by Windows is considered to be a 1600x1200 display.

I've used PowerStrip to add custom resolutions in Windows 7. I've added the resolution 1360x768. I got the ATI 3670 and RGBLED screen.

    Monitor's don't need drivers:

lol....well, cheap ones don't, just like cheap mice. But it be laughable to ask someone with a Razer mouse to just settle with Windows' driver. So, granted, Dell should've at least given us a driver which allows for it's own color management, more resolution, and some of the pricier ones, I think, even have timing adjustment.

Yeah especially on laptops, the display doesn't have any control logic or scaling processor like on an external monitor, its just a slave to the video card (i.e. GPU performs resolution scaling). There's no separating the two, all the brains are in the video card.

The only time a monitor would need a driver is if it has some extra functionality (beyond displaying video output) like multi-touch or something. But even then it's not really the monitor with the driver, its the touch hardware.

PowerStrip does do what I want, that is add 1600x900 as an available resolution and of course the SEC5448 can do it easily. I just created an new monitor inf from the detected SEC5448 display then added the custom resolution. Guess this will do. While I will of course always try to run at the native resolution of 1920x1080 having 1600x900 as an option for an over demanding game is something I've been wanting.

one of the reasons that resolution came to mind, was i didn't get the 1080p screen, and my res is 1600x900. Crysis, CoD MW2 etc run great at that res, and it's a bit lower than the one you were running as well. ^-^
