Hey all, just wondering what everyone elses start up experiences are?
When I logon to Win7 it hangs at 'welcome' for quite a while, then goes to desktop and has the loading cursor while my desktop icons load, then my antivirus loads.
It isn't crazy slow, it is just a lot slower than my M1530 which was instant. Am I just noticing the difference between my 5400rpm drive and my old 7200rpm drive? Is it a significant difference? I will be poppin in another WD Scorpio Black as soon as I can so hopefully that will help![]()

Go SSD and you will see even bigger differences i shutdown in 9 secs restart in under 30 seconds
To answer your question yes a 5400RPM drive is slightly noticeably slower than a 7200RPM drive -
Yea I dream of the day I can afford a good 256 ssd. Im curious though as to whether anyone else with the 5400rpm finds it that slow. It would be crazy if there was that much difference between the 5400 and the 7200

Man got really excited there for a second, and it was set to 1, but changing to 4 didnt really do anything
Thanks heaps for the tip tho!
I mean sometimes I even get the loading cursor (spinning blue wheel), BEFORE the windows logon screen comes on.
Just seems like an incredibly slow boot up :S -
The multiple cores tip is a common myth (see here: http://lifehacker.com/5033518/debunking-common-windows-performance-tweaking-myths).
Yes, a 7200 RPM can make a notable difference (I upgraded to a Scorpio Black on my Toshiba tablet, the 7200 RPM Hitachi that came with my 1645 seems decent). I'm assuming you've gone through your Services and startup entries?
To be fair, my 1645 seems slower to startup than my 3-year-old Toshiba too (I see the behaviour you're describing), and I'm running a clean install with stripped-down startup entries and no antivirus. I'm not sure why it is, most likely a driver specific to these systems. I just avoid restarting and Standby or Hibernate, except for Windows Updates. -
Nah I haven't been through startup entries etc and was under the impression that Win7 did not really need tweaking like Vista did. Didn't tweak it on my m1530 and it ran fast.
Maybe the 16 just boots really slow. Seems odd given that it is such a powerful machine -
I would say antivirus slows things down. Alot.
You might wanna check out the Event Viewer for startup errors too. -
Yeah I also use sleep and hibernate, its much faster. I have the 7200 rpm hard drive and its still slower than my 2 year Pavilion desktop with Core 2 Duo and a 5400 rpm hard drive??? -

I think its just the 5400RPM drive is slower than what you are used to, and WIndows 7 does not need tweaking as it suspends certain startup items till after the computer initially starts up

like my case I had a desktop hard drive crash and had an extra seagate 7200 RPM notebook drive, and was broke so got the adapter and put it in, and I instantly started saving money for a new 3.5" -
It's not antivirus, I use antivir which is light as on resources and was on my m1530.
I have 80 errors in the last 7 days but have NO idea what any of it means lol. Never used event viewer before. I am sure more people would have mentioned it if it was this slow for everyone. I will time the reboot and post results... -
Argh this is ridiculous! I reboot, and I get the sound that happens when the windows loading screen comes up, but with a black screen with loading cursor for 5 secs.
Just seems crazy.
Also what program do people use to measure boot time?
Thanks -
You should just clear the logs and check the fresh logs from startup. Some bad programs might contribute to the slow startup. I used to have a bad Cyberlink program in my old HP on startup and my startup was like 5 mins.
-
Thanks will do that

I get a boot time of 1 min 40 sec from the time I press start button to fully loading up on my SXPS 1645. I think this is slow for its specs too. It runs on original factory Windows7 loading along with McAfee antivirus and gets stuck in Welcome page for sometime. Any reason and fixes?
In the startup programs, I noticed Face recognition application running, even though I do not use it. Is this the reason, is it safe to disable them? -
OMG !
I have a SSD and boot under 30 sec for sure, didn't realize SSD were so much faster than mechanical drives. -

Just timed it:
Specs : 1640 with 4gb ddr3 and t9800 cpu with 3670 gpu. 250gb 7200 rpm drive. Running a clean (non-dell) install of windows 7 premium. I did however install all dell drivers including quickset. I do not have the face recognition software installed, and I do not use antivirus. My CPU is also undervolted, but that doesn't go into effect until I login.
Startup programs: Steam, PowerISO, and RMclocker.
Time to boot up to login screen: 32 seconds.
Time to get into windows and get a working firefox page: 43 seconds.
Hope this helps.
A tech is coming out in a couple hours to replace my motherboard with a 4670 motherboard due to throttling issues. I'll re-time it then and see if there's any difference. Hypothetically, there shouldn't be, but you never know... -

Is this what your experiencing ?
I wasnt trying to point out anything about the SSD , but this hangs for as long as you say -
ST9250410ASG is the device ID. So the standard seagate ATA 7200 rpm drive with fall sensor.

he is describing the same thing as you gys and it was solved check it out might be helpful. Also, have you guys searched the windows 7 forums -
I can tell you the easiest most sure way to fix this. Burn it all down and build new. Or in computer terms, reformat.
Except don't load the dell restore crap. Find a clean copy of windows 7 pro(I can link you in PM if need be), reformat the partition that currently has windows 7 and install there. Leave your Quickset and Restore partition alone.
Then install your drivers. Then install avast(or other low footprint antivirus) and forget about Mcafee (unless they've drastically improved recently).
If you're still having issues after doing all this, you're either having a HD issue, or a driver issue.
