I'm wondering if I am the only one, but I had 2 SXPS16, an original and a replacement, both were shipped with A08 bios, both seemed pretty hot to the touch like everyone talked about (still not unbearable, just a little uncomfortable) but this new one that was shipped with A10 bios seems way more manageable, so manageable i don't even think about heat anymore, in fact it has been on my lap for the past hour and a half and no more hot than my 3 year old toshiba

anyone else have the same experience?

I do not have an old model for comparison, but I would say the heat is definitely manageable for my XPS 1640 (Bios A10). I could put it on my laptop with no problem.

The heat was only ever a problem during stressing, it made the palmrests warm. It was always blown out of proportion.

I havn't checked what version bios my XPS16 uses, but under normal use, its never hot. Palm rest i'd say is no more warmer than my old HP dv2000 laptop which is relatively cool, but under load/gaming, it does get very warm.

I blame it on poor vent design since the LCD screen basically blocks the vents.

Again, the LCD screen DOES NOT block the vents. If only you could take a look at MBP's.

I have to disagree, I just received mine. Also own a Powerbook G4 with similar vent design.

It blocks the vents in the sense that the fan has to work harder to push the air out. It actually splits the air flow in 2, towards the screen and towards the back.

When i lower the lid so the vents are unrestricted the fans slow down.

This laptop only gets warm not hot as people have reported.

sxps with ati 4670 gets hotter, mainly because it use 5 watt more then ati 3670....have 2 friends with sxps both have ati 4670 and both their laptops idle about 5-7C more

and guys, please stop jerking around about the vent whole..........just feel the bottom of the screen....is it warm ???? is it hot ????? (mine isn't) end of story !

I just wonder how hot the new i7 version is going to get or will they improve the thermal design?

i7's havent been shown to be any hotter than Core 2's so far. Under stress they might get a little hotter, but they are much more efficient when idling since they can turn off unused cores and just overclock the ones that are being used.

That said, the SXPS16 doesn't get hot because of the CPU. Or the GPU. Or the HDD. It gets warm around the touchpad because the southbridge is right by it, and it's so thin the heat has no place to dissipate. Venting the bottom is the only way to keep it cooler.

hhmmm. the main cause is because SXPS 16 only use ONE fan..............most gaming rigs (M170, M1710, 9400, etc) use two fans and there by gets cooler.

the qustion though was if latter models becomes cooler. the answer is 4670 rigs gets about 5-7C warmer....thats it

XPS line has always been known to be geared towards gamers, yes. Not to say that the SXPS 16 is a 'built for gaming' machine per say, but still... This is no Inspiron.

yea, i play wow on studio 16.
since xps m1730 isalready phased out,
stduio 16 is only one left to be gaming capable.

Its quite capable indeed. I've been playing COD5 on mine for a couple of days with almost everything maxed out and I've been very pleased with the performance.

Although i agree the southbridge warms the touchpad, the laptop does get warm when gaming because of the cpu/gpu/ram/wifi heat that builds up and cant dissipate because of the laptops thermal exhaust.

To see what i mean, run hwmonitor and run a demanding game or prime and furnark. check your temps after an hour and feel your palmrest. now make sure the screen is only open 45 degrees, repeat the test and you will see/feel a massive difference.
When at my desk i game on an external monitor with laptop screen at 45 degrees and it barely gets warm
