Was wondering if anyone here has experience running the Samsung 830 SSD in a HD caddy in the DVD rom slot of the L501X?

I noticed that people have been having issues with running 7200rpm HD's in there due to the current draw being high. According to Anandtech's review of Samsung's 830 SSD he states that the current draw is over 5 watts at peak writing. Seeing as the 7200rpm HD's which have a similar current draw at spin-up are causing problems would I be best to avoid Samsung's 830 SSD?

I'm wanting to use 2 of these drives- one under the palm rest for OS, and another in the DVD bay for emulation purposes.

It's 5W at peak write... unless you're writing to the thing at full speed all the time, it shouldn't be an issue. All things considered, idle and load, I think Samsung is generally pretty good with respect to power consumption.

I was a little worried as I will be moving large multi GB image files from one SSD to another from time to time so would have the drive running at peak load for quite a while.

Storagereview suggests that the 256GB version which I intend to get peaks lower at 3.47 watts so I hope this may not be a problem after all.

When I get the drives I'll copy my image files over to the DVD bay drive so will find out pretty quickly if there is a problem. Fingers crossed!

I don't think big sequential transfers will stress the drive as much as heavy random writes... though I'm not totally sure about that, so don't quote me on that.

I didn't think about that, but I can see why you think that might be the case- thanks :)
