What type of anti-virus do you guys use? Right now I am only using avg. I heard norton was bad and mcfee. I used to think that I didn't need to worry about it because I don't do anything that would cause viruses but a month ago someone got my credit card information and tried buying something. Luckily my bank noticed and didn't let the transaction go through.

I use Microsoft Security Essentials. It's made by Microsoft and it's free for people with a valid copy of Windows. It's probably the best way to go.

That being said, the credit card thing could be completely unrelated to computer purchases.

Yeah you could be right. I hardly use it unless it's out to eat or the grocery store so it was weird that someone had gotten my info. Thanks I've heard of windows essential so I think I'll just go with that then.

Try MSE, it's free & light on your lappy. I've never had any problems with it.

    Here is the LINK

Also, be sure to check out this section, very helpful!

Microsoft Security Essentials for sure. Its what we install on all our customers machines (that don't already have antivirus). Its great.

Norton is decent protection but so intrusive that it causes more problems than it fixes and stops a lot of users from doing things they want to do.

The latest version of McAfee is supposed to be pretty good (according to MaximumPC) but the years and years of ilk and junk they have produced has made me tend to stay away from them.

MSE is light, has enough features for the average user, is free, and works great.

AVG is also in the "alright" category but they have been having major software problems lately. Both them and McAfee have recently released patches that, when installed, causes blue screens on boot. AVG also comes with a buncha "crapware" which is just another reason I shy away from it.

If you want the hands-down best AV available, theres also ESET NOD32.

^^I will never go with McAffee again, even with any improvements. It came installed on my 1530 when I had it and caused nothing but problems. I uninstalled & switched to Avira at that time & it was a nice program. After I received my 1647 I started using MSE...and as stated it's a nice program.

That's just my personal opinion of course, everyone has their differing thoughts..: )

Agreed with MSE, it's free and it's pretty lightweight (comparatively). I use this on my personal desktop at home.

That said, our office uses ESET Smart Security for Enterprise for department computers, and issues us one license each for one personal computers. I use this license on my 1645.

Ah thanks everyone. Yeah I'll stick with the ME because it's free. I look on Cnet to see the reviews and just noticed that the Free ones are rated higher than the ones you buy. Just made me curious. This forum has become very helpful. Hopefully when my laptop comes in there wont be any problems

    mcafee is junk

another ++ vote for free MSE

avast free is another way to go

    for spyware use malwarebytes' antimalware

personally, i like norton 360 and use many of it's features, however it can be processor/ram intensive which is what turns most people off. i don't notice any of that due to my setup.

if you ask me, i would stick to the free 1-year period you get with the computer you purchase. after all, it's a full antivirus suite. once that period is over, I would switch to MSE :)

    Another vote for MSE!

First thing I did when my laptop arrived was - Uninstall McAffee and install MSE. I like it. It's been said already but it really is light and it works.
