I am thinking about selling 9 month old used Studio XPS 1645 on ebay so I can get a lighter laptop. Would you buy this for $1700?

$2000... what is that, full price for a throttling system? And don't get me started on the whole 'used' thing.
-
First, this is based off of the pricing on Ebay. I saw a couple of 1645s for $1900(refurbished) that had much lower specs and people were bidding on them.
Second, I paid $3000 for this computer, so you are getting a 33% discount because it's used
Third, if you're going to go on a rant, please go away, I am just trying to get an idea of what I should start it at when I put it up on Ebay. If you're not going to be helpful, just shut your (pie)hole. -
No disrespect intended, but laptop values decline very quickly. Your same spec'd laptop (except with 8GB) was sold for under $1400, new, with the correct coupons on one of Dell's sites. Good luck finding a sucker.
Edit: You did say lightly used, which gave the false impression that you weren't an early adopter who used the laptop for 9-10 months, which would mean I was reasonable in thinking $2000 is "full price". -
I think $1600-1700 is more reasonable for that set up.
Those listings with $1900 are possibly fraud(Shill bidding). I've checked almost every auction and I saw a person with 0 feedback bidding with a certain amount every auction. That's highly suspicious. -
-
You should list the date the warranty expires with the specs. The difference between a 1 year and 3 year warranty is $200 before coupons on Dell's site.

I would actually watch those ebay listings with the high prices. Like another poster mentioned, it could be fraud. Also, sometimes sellers prey on the uninformed but it is unlikely that they'll unload those sysem at the high prices. A lot of people refer to the retail but that doesn't mean a whole lot in the grand scheme of things.
At the time of purchase, I got one heck of a deal on my XPS, essentially 35% off the current price at that time. With a little bit of patience and combo of coupons an informed buyer will know that they can match or best the config for hundreds less on a new unit. I would think under ideal circumstances you may be able to get around $1500 out of someone unless an uninformed person with money happens to jump on it.
Another plus is having the warranty which expires a ways out. That is a big selling point and may net you slightly higher. In the event that I choose to sell mine, the warranty and accidental damage would bump be a perk to get it sold slightly higher than one without a warranty. People like that added insurance. -
820qm/rgb led/6gb/bluray/almost 2 yrs left on warranty.
I say $1700 + shipping is where it's at. -

-
I agree with Fred. No more than $1000.
There's nothing about this unit that makes it worth anywhere near the price you're asking... and that's based on the specifications alone; throw in the throttling fun that people have been complaining about here and you'd lose even more. Still, you might find someone unfortunate enough to consider that a good deal. -

I have the exactly same system besides that mine is with 4GB of ram and 6 cell battery. I bought it new from dell for $1900 and this price was included a second laptop (dell mini 10v)...
Just wondering where did you purchase yours for $3k...? -
-
Hi dell_love-hate,
In no way am I trying to argue against your price, but I thought I'd chime in to give you an idea of what a 1645 costs today (at least as of August 12). I hope it can help you, even if a little bit.
i7-720QM
8GB RAM*
ATi HD 5730
1080p WLED
BD-ROM/DVD-RW
128GB SSD**
Bluetooth*
Intel 6250 WiMax*
9-cell battery
3-year Advanced Service + LoJack warranty
A few things to note:
* I got these upgrades either discounted or for free when I called in to order
-6GB -> 8GB $50
-Bluetooth $0
-Dell 1501 -> Intel WiMax 6250 $0
** Originally I ordered the 500GB HDD, but I received a phone call yesterday afternoon from Dell stating that there was a discrepancy on their end as to whether I ordered the 500 HDD or 128 SSD drive, and that this would delay my order by about a week. To make up for the delay, they were offered me the 128GB SSD upgrade for $50. So I figured I'd take it, and just swap it with the spare 320GB HDD i have at the office (I need space, not speed).
Including the upgrades, the price came down to ~$1950 CAD after BC taxes -
I forgot to mention that my machine still has LoJack for another 4 months. (Personally, I think the price is fair. It still works like new. I know you're not arguing with my price, and thanks for the insight. -
FYI: The absolute only difference between our machines is that yours has a BD-ROM drive. In November of last year I ordered my 1645 new for just over $1700. Take that for what it's worth.

From Dell Canada when i can get that system for 1599.99 + tax i think thats a complete rip
-
yeah just thought i'd pitch in an FYI for a recently bought machine.
keep in mind that it's 12% taxes here in BC, and for you (though i think yours is 13%?). the pre-tax price was about $1750. -
I'm about to grab the "Better" system choice from the XPS 16 Canada site. It's an i7 with a 3 year warranty, comes out to $1597 before HST, 1800 after (SIGH).
Going to call in and hopefully get free bluetooth, wifi upgrade since I'm dropping $400 on the damn warranty. -
i've got my fingers crossed for ya!
also, i hope you get a good sales agent. i had a slightly difficult time understanding my original sales agent, before getting his manager on teh phone! -
The base retail price for that without discounts, sales, or coupons is $1900 new.
They ones now offer the 5730, an upgrade, but no RGBLED, a downgrade. And a BD-R instead of a BD-RW. I'll say that about evens out.
Taking into consideration that most people (outside of this forum) probably aren't aware of the throttling problem, I'll ignore that.
Taking about $500 for it being used (I think I'm being generous here) leaves you at a max used private party value of around $1400. I think $1200-$1300 is a more reasonable asking price though.
You'd probably be better off arguing with Dell for an upgrade to a 5730 motherboard due to throttling. That might fix your throttling problem. Even if Dell refuses to upgrade your GPU for free, paying them $200 for a new motherboard is a much lower net loss than trying to sell it used. -

I know this is about the 1645, but just the other day I bought a used XPS 1640, T9600, ATI 3670 off of Craigslist for $300.
It's in mint condition. I know some will not believe that, but it is the truth and was floored when the seller listed it for that. We were just looking for a inexpensive laptop for home since our kids are getting bigger and using the desktop more and more. The XPS is bigger and heavier than we were expecting, but couldn't pass the deal up.
I've been reading this forum for the past few days regarding all the issues and makes me wonder if I shouldn't just throw it on Ebay and use the money towards a different laptop.
Thoughts? -
To be honest I got a 720QM, 4GB DDR3-1333, 500GB @7200 RPM, Full HD (1080p), 5730 1GB, 9 cell for 1100 after taxes refurbished from dell outlet. So I think you got the 820QM and then 6GB ram. a 4GB Dim is around $100 and the CPU I guess i think a $150 upgrade? so 250+1100 = 1350, I think that would be a fair price if not less. I know you paid 3G's and that was then, I am saying what it sells for now.

ah see, you're using their special EPP site which gives them a better discount. i work for a local Vancouver company that contracts out to Telus Enterprise Solutions, so I can only use the basic Telus EPP discount of 7% (plus another 5% for warranties 2+ years).
-
-
I think he meant to say that $800 includes the mobo, the 820qm cpu, and the embedded ati graphics.
-
I've read that the the mobo with i720 QM and 4670 is $600+, so I estimated that the 8xx and 5730 would add at least $200 more since Dell charges $350 to upgrade from the 720 to 820. -
-
The base including the 820 cpu is worth about $600 in parts, but we are talking about the whole laptop here with a 2 yr warranty.
-
I would just put up on ebay with a starting bid at 1100 on ebay and a 1800 buy it now and see were that takes you. How much it sells for that is how much it is worth. -
