The General Availability date for 7 seems set for October 22, however the RTM has passed, so might we see some laptop/desktops shipping with the new OS soon?

I'm thinking it might be worth my while holding off on an XPS until they start shipping with 7 if it's only an extra few weeks. That way I can leapfrog Vista all together and not have to worry about 'claiming' my copy of 7 and formatting/installing it.

Even though the OEM's will have Win7 before 10/22 I do not know if they are allowed to release it. I would assume they do not, until is proven otherwise.

OEMs do already have their RTM copies of Windows 7. According to Microsoft, before GA, OEMs won't have it available on their PC's. But most, if not all, OEMs are offering free upgrades to Win7 when you purchase a new machine with Vista on it. Yes, RTM has passed, but currently 7 is only available to MSDN/Technet Subscribers and volume license customers with Software Assurance. So yes, through work, I have already begun testing Windows 7 Enterprise, but don't have anything but the RC available for personal use.

You'd think MS would allow OEMs to sell systems with 7 pre-loaded before GA: think of the extra laptop/desktop sales that would arise from people "simply having" to have Windows 7 as quickly as possible.

It's like people spending £40 on a game, simply because it comes with a playable demo of the title they're REALLY excited about.
