    Hi everybody,

should I buy the Dell XPS 1640 (P8600, ATI 3670). I intend to use the Dell XPS 1640 for web surfing, watching movies, and play some light games online. Would my Dell XPS 1640 with ATI 3670 will have these problems like overheating and throttling?

After reading those horrible stories about XPS 1640 like overheatinga and throttling). I am not so sure about buying them. Please help me.

    Thanks

After dealing with three months in hell dealing with over heating and throttling, I'd strongly try to avoid it, but if the price is good, then maybe.

Now if you are not doing gaming, then it should work fine, but if you do any gaming or anything that would work the processor, then you'll have issues.

The model you are asking about should have no real issues. I have a larger processor and overclocked my GPU and I am able to put it on power saver and let it stay on my lap for all my word processing/web surfing needs. If I want to play games, at least demanding ones, I put it on a table because it will get hot but I have never had an overheating issue.

I can only speak directly for my laptop (see signature for specs), but for the tasks you describe the laptop sounds like a pretty good fit. I love my laptop and would definitely recommend it to others, though I have the 1645 and don't have any hands-on experience with a 1640.

    Thanks for your promtly reply.

I saw ebay sell refurbished Dell XPS 1640 (P8600, ATI 3670) for $700. My main concern is the overheat for Dell XPS 1640. Otherwise, I absolutely love the design. So if I buy the XPS 1640, should I update to BIOS A14 and get the 130W adapter? Is $700 sound like good price for you guy to buy it?

    Thanks

I'm not sure is that particular model needs the 130w, since it has the P series processor (more efficient) and the weaker graphics card.

One thing though is to be careful of individual sellers trying to get rid of a laptop that had something spilled on it (or other damage), even if under warranty. I've read stories of people buying a used laptop on ebay that broke after 3 months, and when it was sent in, it was determined that the damage was caused by a spill, which isn't covered under standard warranty.

TRUE if it is labeled as used, but if it is labeled newly refurbished, I am pretty sure you will not have to worry about that... in the event of a problem, a refurb still has a 1 year warr...

I have the P8600 and the 3670 graphics card.
I use it mostly for web, school work, and light gaming as well.
    no problems.
