I am considering buying the dell xps 17, but I am hesitant to buy it because I heard that the XPS line is really bad. I only consider buying it is because after discounts, it will only be $1025 for top specs. So if anyone has experience with the XPS line, can you tell me your experience with it? and when was the dell xps released? because I don't want an outdated laptop. Thanks for the responses.

We have both an XPS 15 (L502x) and an XPS 17 (L701x) and they are great laptops. The build quality is what I'd consider to be above average for consumer laptops and ours have proven to be very durable so far. If you do happen to get one that's a lemon (possible with ANY manufacturer) Dell has some of the best warranty and return policies in the business.
The latest refresh was earlier this year, IIRC, and I wouldn't expect another refresh/redesign until at least the second quarter of 2012. -
Longer. Look at google trends:
Google Trends: xps 15, xps 17, studio 15, studio 17
The studio line was available for over 2 years before the new xps was introduced. It makes no sense to introduce a new design so soon. -
Make sure one of those specs is the 1080p screen. The screen is the most important upgrade.
-
haha I've seen you in like 3-4 other threads saying that. You seem vehemently opposed to anyone buying an XPS 15 w/o the 1080p screen lol. I don't disagree with you I just found it funny.

I recently ordered a dell xps 17 FHD 3d...i7 2xxx, 6gb ram, 550m 1gb graphics
It came around $1240.19 with the offers..dunno how u turned it down to $1025...
Right now in the oct offer...3d model is not included...
I think its a good system...may be not great...if u are a gamer...
But I can tell u one thing, my fnd who owns a lap with gt540m, can run most of the games..even crysis..well not in the high settings as expected..
Sound is got to be good...its jbl..with sub...(although I dunno...if using a sub built in on the board is actually good for it)
The viewing angles are reasonably good..
Design looks good..
Its a good laptop in all aspects..
Regarding the xps line...for the past 5 years..my friends who had xps line..had no complaints...both the first gen I series and the one just before that..
laptop life seems great on them...great after service...(they mostly replace anything at all, with full cover ofcourse)
If u r an above avg gamer...u ll curse urself..as all the xps models come with gddr3 vram..and not gddr5...thats the only thing bothering me now..
(if so try asus g74sx 3de awsum..saw it with a fnd..if u r not interested in 3d try the g74sx a..but all costly ones..$1800+..then I guess theres sager, msi,etc)
But I dun think it would affect me much..as m not very particular that I want to play all my games in high settings...
Hope u make the best choice..

I chose the non-3d one. Base price for it right now is $1199 which includes Nvidia GT555 3GB VRAM, 8GB RAM, 1 TB HDD, i7 2GHz
I have a student discount and a $150 off coupon which can be found by googling it. The price would then be $1025, without tax -
You got the stock 900p instead of 1080p?
-
Thats gud...i ve a students discount too..but its only 2%..and somebody said if I opted that I wont get the $150 off..hell with offers..when I ordered my dell...there was an offer called 'update week' which inc free 3d glasses...but still they billed me for it..which is around $105 with tax..so I called them up...and they are like "sir there was no such offer" wth
Anyways...if u can get both its great...
Lucky u..;-)
And like somebody posted earlier ..i wud also advice u to go for a1080p...because from all the reviews I have seen...dell's present 1080p ranges in from good to great...its worth the money..with reasonably good viewing angles...and gt 555 and gt 550 are diff...but for a gamer its way below par as both are gddr3 ...when I placed the order I was thinking real hard whether to go for gt 550 or 555
But in the end I went for 550 because I couldnt convince myself that gt 555 is worth $150...
and I am sure you know of now 1gb or 3gb vram is not something huge..
well if u r an assassins creed fan(like me)...i reviewed my system on its (AC Revelations) specs on game-debate.com
And it a got a colourless tick for 550 and a green one for 555..the question is...is that worth $150.. -
No, it is the 1080p screen as well.
-
Good that its a 1080p
Btw when are u planning to buy?
The non 3d model has that signature blah blah offer thats why its only $1199... -
I am planning to buy it within this week. I just want to do a little research before spending a pretty large amount of money on a new laptop. So you guys think it is a good buy?
-
Use this code, 7WR1C2?HTTQQ11 for an extra $150 off! Worked for me last week on the signature deal. $1049
-
It's a great system, I am very happy with mine. Specs in sig, similar to yours (different CPU, and I added the RAM and SSD myself).
-
Hm nice....that coupon still works I bought mine last month with the same one..
Yep thats a go..unless well I can help in cinfusing u...like msi n all...but stick with it..i dont see anything wrong with that device..esp for that,price..and btw..if u r getting a customer care agent to help ur order make sure u mention all the offers available online (limited time offers)
I screwed up and lost a $104 offer because I forgot to do that..i ve written to them, but they havent responded yet..
Well good luck with ur purchase..
Can I get some rep power?
Should I buy the XPS 17?
