Should I keep the L401x or get L501x?

    Hi,

After a month of waiting for L401x I was disappointed because it fails on the one thing I need it most for: the screen. Dell won't change the screen so I am stuck with the option of the L501x. I hear the screen is great but it is too big to carry along with my other gear.

The L401x unit was a replacement for the 10-time failing M1330. The M1330 was already heavy but did what I need to do for work.

Should I just keep the L401x and wait for a possible/future screen replacement option by Dell.

or: get the L501x and pay the weight penalty.

If the screen is important to you why did you pick the XPS 14 in the first place? The XPS 15 is not much bigger or heavier than the 14 so that should not be much of problem imo.
But I'm not actually sure that the FHD screen for the XPS 15 is still available for orders. In many countries it's out of stock. And without that screen the XPS 15 loses much of it's charme.

Do you know if that's the best replacement screen we can get for the XPS 14? Cost isn't an issue for me.

I was looking for better ones also but it looks like that's the only one people have used so far, so I don't want to risk getting anything else. It also has a matte version if you don't like glossy, but the contrast ratio isn't as good. Not sure if there are any compatible 1080p screens but that might make things too small for the 14" anyway so I would stick with the 900p. The contrast, color, and viewing angles seem like the best and everyone who got it seems extremely satisfied. It uses a 200 pin connector btw, in case you want to look for other ones

I read a number of reviews on the XPS 14 before OK'ing the replacement of the L401x (over a Studio 14 that people here did not recommend). No reviews, including Joanna from Engadget, mentioned the screen problem. In fact, I can't believe they didn't mention it.

I need to carry this laptop along with 15-20 pounds of gear. The xps 14 is already bigger and bulkier than the M1330. I'm sure the XPS 15 is much bigger than XPS 14.

I will probably keep the 14 because our company got sick of Dell's games with hardware and support. We are keeping the current Dells as benchwarming spares. The new Macbook Pros I'm sure will not have the crappy screen and motherboards that die every three months.

Did Dell give you a choice or exchanging the XPS 14 for the XPS 15?
