Hi, I apologize if the answer is already posted somewhere. I thought I bookmarked a link but can't find it now.
I'm ready to buy the Dell XPS 15 in the next hour or so and don't know if I need the Dell "Recovery DVD for Windows 7 Home Premium OS" disc to more easily do a clean install of Windows 7 once my computer arrives. I though I read somewhere that it wasn't necessary.
I hate to have to spend the extra $15 if it's something I don't need but if it makes the clean install easier I would just spend the $15??
Please help, thanks
Also, if anyone knows, will the new notebook come with any kind of software on disc, like a drivers CD?

Please just tell me if I should order it or not or point me in the direction of a link with the info. Thanks

I am not sure if they send you a fresh copy.. as far as I know they send you the laptop preloaded with a fresh installation. my understanding is you can create the recovery DVD without ordering it so basically you pay the extra money to get the DVD instead of creating it by ur self so even if you use the DVD that you get from Dell it will be the same copy.. again I am not sure about that so you might wait until someone has a better answer -
even if you dont order, i bet you could call CS and ask for it at a later date and get them to send you a free copy.. all about who you talk to..

I assumed it was a recovery DVD (with bloatware, like the recovery partition), and not a Windows 7 DVD.
-
Wow, if it's got all the bloatware, how do you do a clean install without buying an actual retail copy of Windows 7. I wonder?
-
I dunno... I looked into it too, but got confused and gave up quickly. lol. Sorry.

Well, there is a clean 'Win7 Home Premium OEM' image in the web. Download it, burn it, install it and register with your valid serial at the bottom of the laptop. Easy

Thanks to all of you who answered. -
$15 is unnecessary if you know how to make a recovery disc yourself, (though crapware is included).
If you want to do a clean install with a retail image of Windows 7, refer to this thread:

I'd recommend acquiring the Windows 7 iso with SP1.
It'll save you a lot of time by bypassing the updates to install SP1. -
The disc Dell sells is a CLEAN Windows 7 disc. Just an OEM version, no crapware, nothing. They also send the drivers disc if you order the $15 deal. Or you can download the drivers off Dell's site, and find a Win 7 iso for the version you order, and use the key on your laptop. OR, there is a form to request the discs, Dell will send them to you one time for free if you fill it out. But you can't do it until you've had the system.
Bottom line, the Dell discs are clean, no crapware on them. If you make the recovery discs through Dell Backup, they WILL have the crapware. Don't make them. -
How do you make the recovery disc? I want to make it because I will use my XPS OEM WIND 7 disc to install a fresh Win 7 OS but if I need to return the laptop I want to be able to go back to the way I got it.

Under programs go to Dell Data Safe local, then select backup, then choose Create System recovery discs. This will allow you to create system disc that is a factory image of what was on the computer when you received it as long as you have made no changes.
Dell DataSafe Local Backup 2.0 Frequently Asked Question (FAQ)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
What are Recovery Discs and why are they important?
Dell DataSafe Local provides you with the capability to create a set of Recovery Discs that contain a complete copy of all software installed on your Dell computer. By creating these Recovery Discs, you are making a backup of all the software that was installed on your computer at the factory, which allows you to reinstall all applications, drivers and the Windows operating system shipped with your computer. While there is a similar copy of the software in the recovery partition, creating recovery discs provides additional protection for the factory installed software -
I assume if you do a clean OS install the recovery partition is also deleted so it is a good idea to make this recovery dvd.
