Well I am supposed to ask this question in the '1645 replacement thread' but I need to get an urgent answer for my question...apologies...
I am being offered a brand new XPS 15 L502X laptop as a replacement for my 16 months old laptop...my warranty expired few months ago but since my case continued till now they are offering me a replacement ...well problem was pretty much similar to what some of SXPS 1645 owners had...overheating and throttling...and really high ideal temperatures (in 60s sometimes)....but nothing else..
    So my 1645 specs are i7 720qm,
    6 gb ram,
    ATI 4670,
    500 GB HDD,
    1920X1080 WLED screen,
rest everything is pretty much standard of 1645's....
And the XPS 15 which is being offered is:
    i7 2630qm,
    6gb ram,
    NVIDIA 525M,
    1920X1080 B+RGLED screen,
    rest pretty much is standard...
I know I am being offered a kinda upgrade in performance specs but is it really worth the replacement and living without a laptop for 14 days (exchange period for which I have to stay without the laptop)...Is there a difference in the looks of these laptops, as in qualitywise...is XPS15's look is throw away (thats what I have read and heard).????..though I have also heard that it looks high end....(you can make out how confused I am)....
All in all...is it a bad..average...good or a great deal...????
Thanks for your patience and answers...

i would jump at that deal. The 16 had a lot of overheating problems but the 15 not nearly as much. The 525 isnt that good but the rest is worth it.

    well thanks for the comment....

    i) so what about the looks ...and aesthetics....is it really the same or better???
ii) is the B+RGLED screen better than the stock FHD WLED screen of 1645.... (though I know the difference but I have never seen one in person so can't really imagine the difference)....
iii) is 525M better or worse than ATI 4670..???
I just want to finalize...and be at peace tonight...and I don't want to regret this later too....so any help is appreciated...

1.i think the new xps styling looks tons better than the previous but i suppose its personal preferance, but the build quality is very good.

2.Ive heard the b+rgled is the best screen for the current xps series but as i have never used either i cant really comment on that.

    3. the 525m is about 10% quicker looking at these benches AMD ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4670 - Notebookcheck.net Tech and can also be overclocked, so not a bad card.

Oh and the i7 2630qm will blow that 720qm out of the water.

Overall i would recommend that offer, but make sure you get a years warranty on the xps 15 if you decide to go for it.

Good luck in your decision! ;)

So by that, do you mean I should push for 540M..???? Though don't really know if I would be able to negotiate for the same....(as laptop is now out of warranty..and its a brand new replacement...)...And yes I do game a bit and I would love to have a kind of future proof system....(atleast for the latest games)....
    thanks for your answers again..

540m is the same as 525m just clocked slightly higher, and only 10-15% faster. Doesn't really matter much, any game can't play with 525m, you can't ply with 540m either.

well considering the card they are offering you is faster than your current, i dont know if they would give you a even faster 540. You could ask but you dont want to sound like your taking advantage otherwise they could drop the whole offer, although unlikely. You'll have to turn down settings on games to be released but its not BAD. Look at this link it has some fps from games at the bottom NVIDIA GeForce GT 525M - Notebookcheck.net Tech

Well could prob play ANY game, just on lowest settings and res, and you can overclock both cards. Really a overclocked 525 could get to a 540 level.

Well Sam that's the same thing I thought about too....would I be asking for too much...???but human nature...can't help it...thanks anyways....but hey..I am only getting three months warranty and not one year....I should ask for warranty's extension...right?

and Bob..even I was thinking about overclocking but with the last overheating crisis with 1645...I am just too scared that I might melt their stock thermal paste....then I will again face the same issues...plus I have never changed the thermal paste....any views regarding that though..???? can I actually do it...without baking the card and melting their thermal paste...

I would definately enquire into a warranty extension if you only get 3 months. I dont think you will melt the thermal paste, overclocking is perfectly safe as long as you monitor temp increases. Lots of people overclock the 525 without problems, see the overclocking the 525 thread in this forum http://forum.notebookreview.com/dell-xps-studio-xps/601505-overclocking-gt-525m-card.html .

you can change the thermal paste yourself but means taking the whole system apart and unless your very experienced doing this, it normally unerves the average user in case you break something which is likely if you dont know what your doing. Heres a link to a guide changing the paste on a xps 17 for some detailed info: http://forum.notebookreview.com/dell-xps-studio-xps/554789-xps-17-repaste-step-step.html
