Should I replace my 6 year old Samsung mSATA 256G SSD in XPS 13 L322X

I have a Dell XPS 13 L322X with a Samsung SSD PM830 mSATA 256GB Firmware: CXM13D1Q
My question is since the SSD is 6 years old now, should I update to a newer mSata 256GB or 512GB SSD?
I'm thinking it would be faster. I really don't need the space as I use my USB WD My Passport 25E2 4TB for storage. So which would be faster, the 256GB or 512GB?

Any suggestions appreciated.

 

You're not really going to gain anything by getting a newer mSATA SSD. I would do it if you needed more space, but you already said you don't...

 

Doesn't a SSD degrade over time performance wise since this is six years old? Even though this laptop six years old, it's pretty darn fast. My wife's 2017 Lenovo laptop with the i5 cpu and standard HDD is a LOT slower than this one.

 

It doesn't degrade over time but it can wear out over time. Typically SSDs will last longer than their useful lifespans. You can check the amount of writes to it with Crystal Disk Info.

I really don't think you are going to see much performance boost relative to the cost of a new SSD.

I would save that money and put it towards a new laptop in a year or two.

 

This laptop would definitely last another year or so. I'll probably get another XPS.
The Graphics would be the main reason for parting with it as the Graphics is quite dated at six years old and can't be upgraded. If it wasn't for that, I really like this laptop. It still pretty fast. I use it primarily for Online, email and Photoshop CS6 as I do photography for a living. See:

Yeah just keep using the laptop, you've got a lot more life in that SSD.

 

Yup, I think I will hang onto this for a couple more years. Even though it six years old, everything is like new.

I was looking for smaller used laptop that I can take with me when I go camping etc. and to use with Photoshop CS6. I'm a wildlife/nature/mountain photographer and the WA Forest Service buys a lot of my pictures every year. I read several reviews and most said this was the best Dell laptop made in 2012-13.
I think $325 is a heck of lot better than spending the $1,500 it cost then. Now the top ones cost in excess of $1,800.

He was NOT kidding, I could not find any smudges, scratches or flaws anywhere, top bottom or in screen & keyboard area. I even used a magnifying glass to find scratches/smudges... none! Like it just came from Dell. After having it for a couple days running it through all kinds of test, I'm an extremely happy camper.





Yeah, I know, I got lazy and shot the pics with my cellphone.
I'll get better ones with my good camera gear next week.


This will stay like new too as I turn off the laptop screen and run it through my 45" HDTV and also use a wireless keyboard & mouse, AND external HD. So it it's just the stuff required to run the laptop on the SSD in it.

My next laptop in a couple years will of course be another Dell XPS.

 

Nice score. Older iron is awesome. I am thinking about getting a few older xps devices just to play with. I want the 11 with the cool flippy screen. the blue desktop system that was out long ago. I had one back in the day and should have kept it. I am also looking for a like new condition surface 3 128 LTE to replace my ipad. I am using apps less and less now, and mostly using chromium edge. PWA apps are cool. I have a bunch on my start menu now for stores etc. Works just like an app. Anything else xps related I can find locally, I am going to grab up.

 

The XPS I have now that this post is about is faster than 90% anything Best Buy sells. Most of theirs they sell only have i5 cpu, 8GB of member and 500GB HDD and it's been that way for a few years. Even one of the higher end XPS has the same specs as mine, i7 cpu, 256GB SSD, 8GB memory, no dedicated GPU and sells for $999. Granted, newer cpu/graphics/ssd. This is why I'm keeping mine. For Photography field trips.
