Hey guys, I know you've seen a lot of the Nvidia GPU threads on these forums, but I've been wondering what you would do in my situation.
So I found this good deal on an M1530: $1268 + tax for a T8300 2.4 ghz CPU, 8600M GT, 4 GB RAM, 4 year warranty with accidents included, and Lojack theft protection software for 4 years.
So I've been testing this computer out, and I really like it. However, this GPU has me worried. Although mine idles at 57 degrees Celsius and gets up to around 78 while playing games (these temperatures seem normal), I wonder how long it will last.
A lot of people are choosing to buy the HP Dv5t. However, a Dv5t with similar specs as mine (difference being a P8400 processor, 9600M GT GPU and a 3 year warranty) costs $1500. However, I could customize it to make it cheaper.
So... what do you guys suggest that I do? I've had this computer since 7/20. I think that means I have 9 days to return it.

You have a 4 year warranty right? If the gpu ever gives you problem, dell will replace it - hopefully with a fixed version down the road.

Seriously, is it working? 78 celcius is nothing for a GPU. Worst thing that will happen is in the next 4 years you will get a brand new laptop. -
keep it. do u like it? if u do and u have a frikin 4 yr warranty keep it then. if anything happens dell will fix it. thats why u spent on the warrantee.

hi everyone
i have tested the laptop just ran an hour COD4 MW ah my gpu idle temp was 65-70c, after playing COD4 MW for an hour my gpu temperature reached 88c, n the games starts to lag n freeze like it was very slow in running, don know why it happened, n the wrist pad, touch pad heated like hell, oh gosh, im really going to return on monday.
but ma gpu temp keep goin up over 88c, so i stopped the game when it started to freeze while in game, the graphics gone slower, so i exit the game n recorded the temperatures.
definitely i will goin to return my xps m1530.?
don know still the 8800 gtx is very expensive here in india?
kindly suggest me a good laptop, how about going with 9700gt?
if i called hp tech support n inquired about dv5t, but they have no idea about dv5t, ? where i can buy a good laptop with 8800gt or other chips except g84/86? please help me, -
Sorry to hear about yours taruian. You can get a laptop with an ATI 3650 or 3850 if you'd like. Maybe you should look into the ASUS F8Va-C1 or F8Va-B1. A 3650 performs about as well as an 8600M GT from my understanding.

I'd get it too, but it costs $1200 without an extended warranty. -

just go with the m1330... i got the same deal as urs (or did i recommend that deal to u?)..... dont really care about the GPU failing, GPU now idles 60+, peaks 90+...
-
you know if i buy online, it cost me much includin shipping charges, can someone tell me how can i buy hpdv5t it has nvidia 9700gt -
Paper_wastage, I don't really see how getting an M1330 would help... I mean they also have heating problems in the GPU, it costs the same but doesn't perform as well... sure it's smaller but I don't mind the size of the M1530.
EDIT: Wow I just realized that there is another thread like this right below mine... -

whoops, i misread m1530 == m1330....
... need more sleep...
just go with the m1530..... dont see many m1530 with gpu problems -
Well, how hard is it to get a replacement from DELL? Do they take a long time to ship?
-
Shipping shouldn't take that long, either!

Well, when I start it up I keep getting a message saying that my battery might not recharge and that the AC adapter isn't compatible with the laptop. However, when I use it, it still charges. Should I be concerned?
*EDIT*
Alright... I think at this point I should try to calm down and analyze the information:
- I have a 4 year warranty for my laptop if anything goes wrong, it will be replaced.
- $1200 for a laptop that performs this well with such a long warranty is pretty much impossible to find elsewhere. Considering the deal I got, the other alternatives may not be worth the extra cost for a 9600M GT and Montevina chipset.
- It doesn't seem like that many people on the forums have said that they've had an 8600M GT that died on them.
- People that do have a dead 8600M GT are probably more likely to post about their GPU than someone who's posting just to say that their card is fine.
- My card reached 87 degrees Celsius, after playing 5 rounds of Unreal Tournament 3, usually idles at 57. The frame rate while playing the game was very steady. I am using the latest drivers from laptopvideo2go and BIOS revision A09. This isn't to say it's not a defect, but it seems pretty safe to use.
- The problem isn't really caused by overheating, but by quick changes in temperature damaging the GPU (however it takes several minutes for the GPU to get to regular idle temperatures).
- My laptop is fairly new and even though it probably is affected, the problem may not be severe as with older models.
- Nvidia has spent millions of dollars trying to fix the issue, but I don't exactly know how they used it, or what the use of that money will accomplish.
- People on these forums are speculating a lot, but there seems to be a lack of evidence to say that this GPU problem is as bad as they say. However, there is also a lack of evidence to say that everything's ok.
- I have about a week left to return it.
- I spend too much time thinking about this... sometimes when I'm trying to sleep. -
keep in mind 21 days from shipping invoice not date you recieve.
people will tell you from time you recieve but heres the facts.
if your in the US anyway.
