Hi everyone, new here and was hoping you could give me a few opinions on this.

    I got a l501x in November: i7-q740, GT435m with the 1366 X 768 display.

That last spec I really regret, should have gone with the 1080p in hindsight. Anyway I was going to do the screen upgrade for £140 and was just wondering if this is even worth it, or whether I should just buy a new l502x with 1080p? I was one of the lucky few who got my xps for £500 (£450 after cashback) so could quite easily sell it on without making a loss.

This is the spec of what I am looking at replacing it with: i5-2410M, GT525m, 1080p display.

All other specs are pretty much the same, but can anyone tell me what the difference between a non sandybridge i7 and a new sandybridge i5 would be? and is there much difference between the older 2gb card and the newer 1gb card?

    Thanks.

between the 2 laptops, there won't be a large difference performance-wise. actually, depending on what you do, the L501x may be faster.

i7 vs i5- the i5 seems to run slightly faster. and sandybridge cpus do run slightly faster when the clocks are the same. however, it only has 2 cores compared to your old i7.

435m vs 525m - they are essentially the same cards. same GF108 core. The only difference are the speeds. 435m has higher core speed (650mhz vs 600) but the 525m has faster memory speed (900mhz vs 800mhz) however both cards' clocks can be changed, but just to let you kno, they will perform pretty much the same. I wouldn't be surprised if the 435 performed better. also there will be no difference between 1gb vs 2gb of video ram.

if the 1080p screen is really important to you, and you're not really losing any money, i would go for it i guess..

Thanks a lot for the reply, very helpful info. I really don't need much cpu/gpu power as I don't game and use my desktop for that. I was under the impression Sandybridge made the world of difference which is what was swaying me towards a new machine - I might just wait for a good deal on an l501x with 1080p to appear in the Outlet.
