I ordered the XPS 16 last week. It's currently in production and is estimated to be shipped on Oct. 4.

Should I cancel that order and wait for the new upcoming XPS notebook?

    I ordered the i7 q40M? (2010)
    8 gb ram
    radeon 5730
    500 gb hd
    wled screen

    the total cost was $1700

will the new one be a lot more expensive?

Wait for the new model. It's only a few months away-- no need to settle for an already aging design...

If you need a laptop now then it's not okay to wait. If you don't need a laptop now then it's okay to wait.

Lastly, if you choose option 2 you forfeit any right to complain about a long wait if there is one.

dude, $1700 for a laptop, this is not year 2003 anymore.
you can get one for $600 to $700 range which includes i5 chip and rgb led screen. im not exaggerating, becuz dell m1730 or xps 1647 is the best laptop ever that doesnt mean it will be more expensive. dell has problem selling their best products while those worthless netbooks dominate the market.

That does seem quite pricey. Not sure if you've got the 840QM or the 740QM though...

The thing with technology is there'll always be something better around the corner, but if you have faith in the rumours and you have time to wait then I'd say just stick it out for a little while.

@charleelaptop- if you are spending $1700 for a dell laptop, you are making a bad deal. and if you are waiting for an xps 16 with the sandy bridge processor, then you have to wait for at least 6 months (3 months for their release and 3 months to know whether they have been successful) :p . So, in my opinion, purchase an xps right now if you are really in need of it.

You can get a nicely configured M17x from dell outlet at that price.

I would agree that there is no point in waiting, unless you're ready to wait at least another 6 months. Also, to put it into perspective, the laptop in my sig cost me $1200 after taxes. Even if your '40m' is a 840M, then the price shouldn't be above $1500, if it's only a 740M then maybe $1400 max. If you can, cancel your 8GB RAM upgrade. It's cheaper to buy 8GB of RAM on newegg, than it is to get it upgraded from Dell. Unless the price is so high because you got the 3year complete care warranty, in which case I'd say it's about right.

    Get 3 year warranty minimum.

Dell canada doesn't have outlet? make sure to compare M17x R2 specs there with what you are paying now..

If you are looking for M17x

    Make sure it has/is

    R2 (i7 series cpus)
    WUXGA RGB screen
    4870 xfire/sli configuration

    3 yr warranty

After taxes, no. But it's still not a "good deal". I recommend you phone Dell and ask to configure a system with a rep. They usually have more options and pricing flexibility. You'll get a lot more for your money on average, since you can't haggle with a website. :)

I just received mine (and it has similar specs). Waiting on Win7 OS CD to do a fresh install but my general moto on tech is never to buy stuff when first released. Wait for it to settle; wait for them to iron out the bugs; and wait for the price to fall. New releases are always pricey.

If you use this, even if the new release comes out in 3 months, you will need to wait another 6 months for the reviews and the like to come in. So really you are talking about a 9 month wait.

At least the existing Dell XPS's are will integrated and you have plenty of reviews about them.

PS I got my setup of AU$1800. Came with a Blu-ray player and double-layer DVD burner, plus the 3 years premium warranty. I thought this a bit of a deal myself and couldn't resist.

Nope, Dell CA does not have a Outlet. : (

They do sell dfsdirectca,(Dell Financial Services) but it can be overpriced, and not a lot of models availi).
