Hey guys, just recieved my m1530 yesterday, installed one game, and a few small applications... last night I was at 118 GB, earlier today I was at 113 GB out of 160... now I'm at 99. Why am I losing space so quickly?
When I uninstall programs and put the folders in the trash, it is not showing any recovered space in my hard drive. What can I do?
Is there something the computer can do to restore certain hard drive space? Thanks guys, help is appreciated.

Its most likely the System Restore points and/or Previous Versions option that is taking up your space. I'm not sure how to go about clearing out the different restore points, but it takes them every so often, especially when you install software/drivers/etc..... -
Your computer is indexing everything, and making restore points for System Restore.....all of which takes up space.
Also, just moving files into the Recycle Bin doesn't REALLY remove them from your HD or reflect on available space. Empty your Recycle Bin and assuming you had a lot in there, you should see your HD space increase.
Welcome to Windows! -
Is the restore points necessary? I thought I read somewhere that there are several things that you can turn off to save lots of space because they weren't that important. What about defragmenting, what does that do?
Thanks guys.

Hello Brutality. Congrats on your new system. As Khris and Chevy stated, this may largely be due in part to your system creating restore points. May I suggest a program such as TuneUp Utils 2008, they offer some great programs. One that I think will help you alot is there Disk Space Explorer. This will tell you, what's exactly taking up the most space on your drive. Be it, restore points, applications or the like. There is also a option that will let you remove all that clutter from your system. The temporary internet files, the system restore points, etc. Hope everything works out.
Here is a link for you. http://www.tune-up.com/products/tuneup-utilities/features/free-up-disk-space/?sx=0&sy=339#st -
I find that turning off System Restore save s**tloads of space, but it depends on if you want the protection or not.

Yes, I also found out that restore point files take huge space of HDD.
When I just calculated I'm suppose to have around 16gigs of used HDD, although it's occupying close to 30gigs. So what I did was, I go to
Computer>>Right click C: drive and click properties>> click disk clean up >>
then go to "More Option" tab>> From "System restore & shadow copies", click
clean up butoon
This would delete old restore point and leaving out the recent restore point.
I was able to get free 10 gigs space by deleting old restore points this way.
Hope this helps. -
If you want to keep system restore, but not have it take up a lot of space you can set it to just keep the more recent restore point and discard any others. You can also determine how much space it should be allowed to use.

The_Observer 9262 is the best:)
Get an external drive and sync it than using system restore. It isn't worth it IMHO.

I had the same problem with my m1330, I just turned off system restore and I got 15gb of space back, I think everytime I downloaded/installed something it was creating a restore point.

if you give it a certain about to use, eg: 10gigs is more then enough, it wont take any more, any i right??

http://www.ccleaner.com/ is a great app to use to clean up drive space lost in temp folders and records all in one simple spot. it's not going to do much for a brand new computer but keep it for down the road, it found me 20 gigs the other day buried in cache folders and temp folders as well as the history and records windows keeps track of.
