Many of the Dell models used a shared Function key / short-cut row; I saw a post on here complaining that the Dell range "were rubbish for games" because of this. Dell comes pre-set to use them as multimedia keys.
Quick (and easy) tip:
Control Panel > Windows Mobility Center > Function Key Row;
switch from Multimedia -> Function keys.
The Fn key will now toggle to multimedia shortcuts. There's also some programs out there that allow you to chose which ones to map either/or on the toggle.
I'm (probably re-re-re-x1000) posting this because it was something I'd noticed here, and googling the issue included bad advice in the top #10 answers (telling you to access the BIOS).

I think thats a default function anyhow. If you press the settings button by the waves max audio you can change it to Function key, and then you can us the Fn key to turn the volume up or whateveer

Another method I would like to add is, you can also change the function key behaviour in the advanced tab, found in the BIOS.

I wish that programmable flux capacitor button could be set to switch between multimedia and function keys.
Why couldn't it have dedicated buttons like the Studio XPS 13, and why is the brightness not controlled by the arrow keys! -
dude i know that lol!~~
