If you were going to purchase a new laptop would the XPS M1530 be it again? I have to say I have been dissapointed and almost willing to just say screw it and get a Mac Book.

    1 - the whole operating system sucks(Vista Ultimate, 32)
2 - For a gaming type laptop the FPS sucks
3 - The webcam is about equal to an off-brand special
    4 - are these seriously speakers, I mean for an $1,800 laptop - ?
    5 - Shocking/needing a grounded cord
    6 - Screen graininess......
7 - Quality of build (bulging/ cheap plastic on the top bezel/ barrel hinges)

I for one have beeen happier in the past with a store bought HP then with my HIGH priced Dell!

You might wanna try Acer, Asus or Gateway first before Apple.

Ewww ... Apple .... Please dont joke around

But yes, i would have to partly agree with you. Although you have to realise that the m1530 is NEVER advertised as a gaming laptop.

But but but ... If i were to buy a new laptop, like you said, i wouldnt buy a dell. Dell is just not as great as it used to be anymore.

Once again ... please dont joke around about buying a macbook .... its just ... ewwww ...

I am not rich , like a mojority of people who post here, but when I decided to purchase a new laptop I thought for my hard earned $2,000, that I would get what I paid for!? I had to have a tech come out and say my original screen was BS, I had my entire 1530 swapped out, then a couple months later the spring came off my my express card apparatus(for lack of the correct term), meanwhile my webcam won't do the room monitoring and gets mediocre FPS, I always have to toy with the BT mouse I bought(DELL) to work after reboot, and I can't even get a battery that will stay charged at 100% for more then a month, give or take a couple weeks. Oh yeah, my keyboard seems to lag when I type and not even when the GPU/CPU are being taxed!

I mainly use my XPS, maybe better xps, hence the lower case - for anything but webcam/downloads/and messaging/surfing.

Well, actually the 1530 was sold as a gaming laptop, though it wasn't terrible for it's day, kind of.

if you were to buy another laptop now, would you stick with the (older-less-equipped)XPS series?...

id go for the Lenovo U330 vs my current M1330

    1) i like my vista home premium x64... going to upgrade to windows 7 soon
    2) i dont mind... my m1330 was the only 4 pound laptop with a graphics card in my budget (other was LG P300, T61P, more expensive)....of course now, there are better choices now that montevina + nvidia 9x00 series are out...
    3) webcam works here... no problems
    4) again.... speakers on a near-ultraportable would be small... i have speakers in my room ...
    5) it has a grounded cord... if u dont, ask dell chat to send u one for free
    6) bad luck for you...
    7) i like the bamboo design... the bezel is plastic and snaps off... i like it

I just received mine not too long ago but I'm more than happy with it.

1 - Vista 64-bit after following both the fresh install and tweaks threads is great
2 - Don't really game with mine, not what I bought it for
3 - Webcam isn't that great, I agree, but I hardly use it. Try getting more light into the room.... see here
4 - Laptop speakers in general are not that great
    5 - Never been shocked
6 - Screen looks great to me, but all I have to compare to is my old Thinkpad
7 - Mine's been sturdy except for the uneven base when it arrived. Fixed it with the dime trick.

It seems these are all hit-or-miss as far as whether or not you like it. I'd definitely buy it again. The SSD I upgraded to is blazing fast. Photoshop CS3, Autocad, Soildworks, Matlab, etc. each open in literally 2 seconds.

This laptop is about a year old, at the time there weren't too many options with an 8600m gt and such a thin form factor for the price. It might have been sold as a gaming laptop and I do some gaming but in reality, an 8600m GT is not a gaming GPU - you can make your case and others might agree, but I say an 8600 can game, its not for gaming.

All your other issues are build quality problems that you should have taken up with Dell immediately and would have been resolved to your satisfaction.

It took me about 5 months of confusion and reading NBR forums to decide my 1530 was actually overheating and not just running ridiculously hot.

Doing it all again I'd definitely ring Dell right from the first time I noticed it.

I don't think he was. I happen to like the laptop too, I however did not pay anywhere near $1800 for mine nor would I.
