Great news, I am glad that finally Dell is doing this the right way!
Thank you again Bill. You will be hearing from me soon, once the 1647 bios update is released.. -
I posted the same info in the other thread but this won't be buried as quickly so I'll post it here as well.
Chinese New Year is February 14th this year, on the same day as Valentine's Day. I can't imagine Dell releasing the BIOS on a Saturday or a Sunday so I guess they are aiming to release it on or before this Friday, February 12th. -
This is a great news...I can't wait for the BIOS update for 1647..... Thanks Bill!!!
-
OK. I knew something was too good to be true. Just got an email from the engineer. He says that 1647 will not require a 130 Watt adapter. You will be getting a new BIOS shortly after Chinese New Year, and testing so far shows it eliminates throttling. If you find out differently at that time, or if we need to revisit the 130 Watt question on 1647, just let us know after you install A04.
Everything else is going according to plan, except my wife says I have to take a break and play with my son. I'll be back after he goes to bed. -
Very, very very great news.
I hope this fixes everything, I allready liked the system when not gaming, but I would like to see it's full potential in CPU/GPU intense applications. -
If its true that the 1647 doesnt need a 90 watt adapter then thats great, it saves us all some trouble. But if not, well.. that would be awful and an ignorant way for Dell to handle this..
Go play with your son, you've done enough! -
Appreciate all your help Bill.
Thank you
-
I really hope this problem is fixed this week. That would be great. Thanks Bill for helping with getting this issue fixed.
-
He crashed 15 minutes after I got there.
Well, it's not that bad. If we discover we need more adapter, and the BIOS is alreay up, it's just a simple matter of flipping the switch and telling tech support to ship them for 1647's upon request. -
Thanks Dell-Bill_B. Super effort!
-
I sincerely hope they're right. The 90W adapter is significantly smaller than the 130W, so if I only have to carry around a 90W with me, I'll be a very happy man.
-
@Bill_B
Thanks, you covered it in the other thread. -
w00t!
Oh, and I think everyone included needs to take a mandatory break from the forums for at least one week to actually enjoy this laptop (or enjoy the peace of not having to answer my emails....lol). I'm disgusted by my post count...

If that's the case can I borrow some of your posts ? I don't have enough posts to send the PM
-
I'll Keep POST #2 updated with 1647 info.. I could be sent a PM if I miss something and I'll update that Post.
-
I have a funny feeling we'll be revisiting this topic. Long story with some particular details I can't share.
-
Thanks for the efforts.
-
Thanks very much, Bill. It was great to see the one like you in a forum.
I need one more post to send a PM to you.
-
Excellent news! Thanks Bill
-
My PM box is clear, and I'm calling it a night, folks. Keep them coming, and I'll be back at it tomorrow. I probably will not have time during office hours to get to too many, but I will be at it after I get home and spend some family time. Gnight, all.
-
Now what about all the ordering problems bill? This month it's the rgbleds...
-
I have some procurement guys who are supposed to be attending my weekly meeting tomorrow. I have 15 minutes on the agenda for them to tell us the story. I hope to have an update to provide about order delays on this thread some time tomorrow.
Now, gnight for real. -
Exactly how many days have you been waiting?
-
Thank you very much! Can't wait to have the 130w psu!
-
That would be awesome bill if you could get some more information.
As so how long I've been waitng, adding up all the bs i've gone through, just about a month. -
Hello Bill, could you please find out how this works in Europe and if there is a contactperson?, the Netherlands especially
Thanks. -
Hello Bill,
thanks to you and to all the Dell people's that have worked on this issue.
I would ask if European people can send the PM to you also, since seems that Todd are accepting only US and Canada request in the official Dell forum.
Thanks for your response! -
what kind of adapter are we recieving? is it a slim? and if its possible a picture?
-
While I am NOT an XPS 1645/1647 Owner, I DO think once things have settled down a bit, that maybe a mass email into Michael Dell's Inbox on behalf of all the work that Bill Todd and - Im blanking on the third fellow's name - for taking the initiative and visiting this forum and then RESPONDING to all the complaints and requests.
I don't know HOW Bill got involved or found out about this forum, but I think he should get some accolades about what he's done here the past couple of weeks on behalf of his company and Michael Dell should definitely know who he is. -
Mitchell2.24v Notebook Evangelist
Is that just from this issue
-
The subject of my email will be Bill and Todd's Excellent Adventure
-
So I guess those with throttling 1640s are out of luck?
So happy for you guys. -
ya its the slim one, someone else posted a pic in the throttling updates thread, he said the 130 watt was about 20% bigger than the 90 watt, roughly same proportions though
-
The actual size of the 130W slim adapter is:
Length = 6 inches
Width = 3 inches
Height = 1 inch thick -
I don't know, the fact that the BIOS alone eliminates the throttling issue on a 90w adapter for the 1647's would seem to be good news to me. I know the issue wasn't nearly as bad as on the 1645's.
-
I understand this only applies to US/Canadian customers?
-
Thanks much for this Bill -- if you can also find out if they plan on enabling the option to purchase the 1645's with an RGBLED screen, it would be much appreciated! Can't even order one with an RGBLED screen anymore (options gone) and I want two of these now that the problem has been resolved.
-
Any luck?
-
i agree..my 1640 is a throttle gate..n i hope the bios update could fix it
-
When should we expect to see a confirmation of shipment?
-
I saw this list on the Dell forum:
1. Your full name
2. Your shipping address (cannot be a PO Box)
3. The service tag of your Studio XPS 1645
4. Title your PM "Replacement 130 watt adapter - SERVICE TAG (and, of course, substitute your lservice tag in the title) This will help me to keep the PMs a bit more organized.
5. The owner name and shipping address should match those on record for the system. If they do not, I will not be able to send out a replacement adapter.
Does this, especially point 5 also count for us ? As I shipped my system to another place as where I am right now... -
I can see my order placed in my 'Recent Orders' in my Dell.ca account. Delivery date is for today but status still shows 'In Production' I'm from Ontario as well.
-
I gave them a different Shipping address from where my laptop was sent and the order seems to be fine in my dell account.
-
Cool, I just gave 'm my new address and said it's changed...
-
I asked for details from 2 teams: 1. the order management team who has the scoop on what parts are on how long of a current lead time, and 2. the sales team on scripting they are working on for the front line sales and care agents. Plan is to look at the two data sets, and provide as much information as I can to shed some light on a realistic timeframe for those facing order delays.
I'm sorry, but as of this time outside the US your only option will be to contact tech support yourself and request the adapter. Since I went public last night, tech support is already getting calls on this but have not been greenlighted as of yet to send the adapters, so don't bother just yet. However, messaging is going out worldwide to tech support in the next 1-3 days, so if you can hang on until then to call, you might get some good news.
Not true. I'm going to open the issue on 1640 as soon as the dust settles on 1645. I have to get an idea for how big the impact to the customer (Dellspeak for how many people are complaining online), then I will enter the issue into my tracker. Once that starts happening, I loop in the core engineering team for 1640, and they go work the issue. Once their issue investigation is done, they will give me an idea of where they want to go and what we can share publicly. I will be sure NBR is on the list of places to hit once the information starts flowing. Hang in there. I got you down.
I think, without seeing the reply from order management referenced above, that the industry as a whole is facing some supply issues to varying degrees by vendor on RGBLED screens. I hope to be able to share some specifics when I get my 2 replies.
Stick with what is posted on the first post of this thread. The level of detail Todd is requesting over there on DCF is not what I'm interested in. The way I see it, whoever has a 1645 that throttles is entitled to the adapter, regardless of who the registered owner is or where they box is now. If it turns out to be a case of fraud or something whacky like that, there's always ways to take care of the customer and react to the "defrauder." -
One more thing in case I didn't spell it out before, this is not my usual role. I jumped in due to the magnitude and in light of the fact that we were not showing any movement that was publicly evident. It is rare when you see me engaged like this. I used to be "that guy," so this is nothing new to me, and it's kinda nostalgic, TBH. Just know that I'm always the guy inside pushing buttons, and I do see what you guys are saying in most cases.
Since I have regular duties that I have to attend to during normal business hours from 8-5, CST, M-F, I can only get to my PM box after work and family time and on the weekends. I'm not going anywhere until the volume of dispatches is low enough that I can transition the outliers to Todd and Brad. So, typically you will see my canned responses to your PM's and the dispatches going down after hours. So, that will add 1 day to whatever lead time you may be thinking when you send the PM. -
Hello Bill,
I was just curious on this comment. Does this mean if we install the new BIOS and purchase a 130 watt adapter, the system would utilize the extra juice?
I am not as concerned with Dell making the fiscal decision of acknowleding the need to provide adapters to 1647 owners as I am with having the ability run my system at full performance levels without 3rd party software. -
@Bill: Quick question regarding shipped adapters...
I received your notification via PM that I can expect an AC adapter in 2-3 business days, barring unforeseen delays. Will I receive a tracking number and/or will the adapter order appear in my account on Dell's website? (I currently have no orders listed)
Thanks again!
