Last week i received my replacement laptop and I noticed that it also had a lot of static problems through the headphone jack. I decided to call up dell to see if they had found a solution but they kept giving me the bs about how this is the first time they have heard of such a problem. That night i set out to find a solution. I ended up doing a clean install of vista and after some trial and error this was the best solution I found::::::::::

    Solution! (somewhat)
    1) Find your sigmatel driver installation files on your hardrive, under drivers probably or the dell folder.
    2) Delete the driver installations
    3) Uninstall the sigmatell driver
    4) Restart pc
    5) Just use the default vista drivers :p

VOILA! Now the static volume should be reduced (however it is STILL there), as well if you go mute it actually mutes the freaking static!

edit: If after the restart your computer can't get the vista audio drivers in, go to device manager (right click my computer>manage, then device manager) right at the very top (where it says your computers name) right click and go scan for hardware changes.

You can't hear the static if you use high quality headphones. I'm using $150 Bose headphones. Its also nice for gaming because it cancels out the fan noise.
