How do you do a system restore for the Studio XPS 16?

I was in the middle of watching a show on hulu when the computer suddenly got really slow for no apparent reason. I tried closing apps but it didn't help. Being very impatient I held the power button down to turn it off. When I turned it back on the hard drive instantly started working non stop (HDD light on solid. not blinking) and it took forever to load windows. The HDD is on constantly now and the performance is terrible.

I'm assuming there's something wrong with the HDD, but i want to try a restore first. My last dell you had to hold down a specific set of buttons to start the restore. Is the xps 16 the same?

Like, apparently, there is a restore partition, but it has nothing on it? I never understood that.

There is a "restore" disc, which is just Windows Vista. Then there's a driver CD (with ancient drivers).

Maybe this was just mine, though: it didn't even get to the POST screen, so there may be some hope.

If you suspect there is a disk problem, restoring from your old config will not help.

    Try doing these

    1. Boot in safe mode. Press F5 or F8 while on boot up, where the big dell logo appears.

    2. If some disk check utility dont run during your boot up to safe mode. Run it manually by doing this

    a. Open a command prompt. In the command prompt type this:

    chkdsk c: /F

this may take a while depending on the size of your disk and problems.

    b. If all is ok, run the disk defragmenter, will not fix problems but will speed things up a bit during disk IO operations.

    good luck!

If you still want to do a factory restore, reboot and press F8. You may have to press F8 several times. You will be able to select factory restore from the menus that come up.
